  • At the beginning of March, we visited the Grand Canyon Caverns near Peach Springs, AZ on Historic Route 66 and spent the night 220 feet underground in the Cavern Suite. The Cavern Suite is said to be the deepest, darkest, largest, and quietest hotel room in the world. Join us as we tour the caverns and sleep in one of the most unique hotel rooms in the world.
    More information on the Grand Canyon Caverns can be found on their website: gccaverns.com/

    I lived and worked here 1992, 93 and 94. All that wood railings and bedroom did not exist then. I worked above ground on the maintenance crew. Occasionally I would go into the caverns to fix something. I did work on the foundation for the sloth. Maybe you could have included views of the campsite and the old motel rooms and the area behind the motel. In its hay day, before Interstate 80 bypassed the section of Route 66 between Seligman and Kingman, Grand Canyon Caverns was a very busy tourist attraction. The rumor going around when I worked there was the scratch Mark's made by the sloth were actually made by a garden rake. Doesn't mean it's true. The original walk down entrance is behind the restaurant in the old employee housing area. The stairs and suspension bridge you showed lead up to that area. Filled in and covered last I knew. On the east end of the employee housing, on the east side of the perimeter fence, I built a firepit and a few of us would spend many a night sitting by the fire. The view was 360 degrees from up there. Last I saw it had fallen into a kind of disrepair with leftovers from users of it not carrying out there party supplies. I have a picture of me standing by the fire taken 12/25/92 which I would share, but, photos can't be placed here. Lotta history, that old section of Route 66. Hope you got to get out and explore more areas of it. Thanx for the updated view. I miss those times...

    • @SmittyAZ
      @SmittyAZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've been on the tour a few times; I used to ride motorcycles by there to get off I40 and finally decided to stop. On my early visit, they had a full working restaurant, gift shop, the other bar area and a store, but no underground lodging. Also, horseback riding. I think there is still a motorcycle camping / rally there every year. Whenever I'd bring someone, I'd try to get them to do the actual tour without me, but they wouldn't do it alone...

      Ya, Ray Smith, that had to be early 70's or earlier, before the Interstate bypassed them. I heard from some ex employees about the good ol busy days. I first went there in 1992 to apply for a job. There used to be all these huge wooden billboards along Route 66 with everything they had to offer. Also used to be a cafe adjoined to the motel office and the swimming pool was in use. I dont know which owner they're on now but it seems they're spending a lot of money to hopefully draw people in. The Route 66 Rivival helped some, but people are in such a hurry to get where they're going that they do miss out, and, miss out on some fascinating history. I knew more of that area then and stopped and explored a lot. And whenever I go back that way I get on old 66 at crookton red exit and cruise 66 nice in slow to get to Kingman without all them oblivious drivers out there on I 40. Those were the days, and, these days will be some young ones later on in life. Coulda woulda shoulda...

      @@johnborne5175 I'm not quite that old. I think the 'full' business come and go. The actual Cavern went from a full restaurant to a buffet on certain nights to no food? I'd get off I40 at Seligman and take it to Kingman to escape the big rigs. The last coupe of times, we did the Cavern tour and then did keepers-of-the-wild. I'd also go over to the store to support them, but I never saw their cafe / bar actually open? Probably early 2000's on.

      @@sovereigncosmicwildman As far as I know, nobody has vanished down there. No rods, because no flying insects. I have seen shimmers, and distortions while doing tours. The real weird stuff happens in the building on the surface. Objects will move. You hear weird noises. Doors open, and close on their own. The REALLY weird stuff happens in the back country behind the Caverns. People have just vanished into thin air. Cryptids, ufo's. all kinds of paranormal stuff.

    I have worked out of town a lot and I once had a roofing foreman that I shared a double room with, on most jobs since neither had us snore. As soon as we would got to the room the AC went full blast then we'd shower and go to dinner then find a bar. We'd get back to the room about 10pm, when you first walked in you could see your last breath from the humid outdoors. He would throw the comforter and blanket on the floor and sleep in his underwear with just the top sheet. The first time I froze my butt off, and even shut the AC off but he woke up and turned it back on. The second time I said either I get the comforter and blanket that he isn't using or I'll short out the AC. From them on I'd sleep with two blankets and two comforters. I bet those rooms were colder than that cave.

    Cavern Trivia, our family moved to Kingman in 1955. One of our weekend trips was to the Cavern circa 1959. All we had was carbide lanterns. We did not descend down a rope, as it was a family adventure and must have been about 8 years old. We crawled through a narrow opening at a steep decline. But did cross that rope bridge. Later in life again as a teenager, went when it was Dinosaur Caverns, and enjoyed a Dinoburger....

    My wife and I went there about 7-8 years ago. We sort of stumbled upon it as we were heading somewhere else. I'm glad we had the time to take the tour. The cavern is huge. Videos and pictures don't do it justice. I half jokingly asked my wife if she wanted to spend the night (the guide had "nonchalantly" mentioned that it wasn't booked). The look was all I needed to see before she even said the words. She had enough cave for one day. Frankly, I did too. I don't have a problem with being in a cave but, for some reason, the idea of spending the night was a little discomforting.

    The cave is a beautiful setting to spend the night, but the room layout and furniture is so horribly dated and needs a refresh. At $1000 per night, you'd think they'd be able to afford some renovations.

    I'm curious as to your quality of sleep in there? I would think that one would sleep better than usual due to it being so cold and dark, but perhaps not?

    At one point you say that the water for the toilet has to be brought down by an attendant. Then a few minutes later you say that it was a bomb shelter during the Cuban Missel Crisis and that there was enough water down there for 2000 people. That being the case, why would an attendant need to bring down water to flush the toilet? Thanks, I'm enjoying the videos, all of them.

    Thanks for the video. Pretty cool. How many emergency exits are there via elevator or latter? I'd be very claustrophobic down there but looks a great place to bug-out in case of a zombie apocalypse haha

    Love the sight seeing and the well proportioned mild music. However I would not put my mouth on any mouth piece of those instruments who knows how many people you don't know have put their mouth on them 😝.

      There are psychotic aliens and reptilians down there, and they could have put their lips on those instruments. Those cave entrances lead to hell.

    I went here in April of 2021 & wanted to stay the night so bad looking back on it I should’ve just called off work the next day lol but little back story in this in 1927 a man named Walter Peck was on his way to a poker game in peach springs when he almost fell into this caves original entrance he eventually went back & got lowered in & discovered 2 hualapai native skeletons & sold tickets to have people seen the “cavemen” ever since he disturbed the graves people have had terrifying experiences down there with supernatural when I was down there I was just randomly filming & turned the corner & caught what looked like a dark figure in a cowboy hat peeping the corner at me, my cousin & the tour guide. We were the only 3 people down there at the time no other tourists only one tour guide… and no animals there’s no food or water for animals to survive down there the tour guide said bacteria can’t even survive down there… the whole experience was pretty freaky but also awesome just wanted to share that for people who might want to visit this awesome cave also you have so sign a waiver for unexplained rocks being thrown & they don’t fall off the ceiling
