      @@FantasyNero my point exactly. Look at HITMAN 3 SSR, those are just soo accurate and beautiful. Not to mention that you can even see reflections of Agent 47 on reflective surfaces and mirrors even without any form of RT. To me, Cyberpunk 2077 is nothing but a glorified RTX tech demo. CDPR could have done better with raster techniques but instead they took the shortcut with RT. Even as a game, CP2077 is mediocre at best, till now.

    Imo the impact of raytracing is understood best when set against the best rasterization can do, often however the rasterized version falls short and hence the visual gap is wider than it would have to be. Part of the reason is certainly that you cannot polish every single corner of an open world with manually designed effects. 0:04 for instance lacks SSR effects, baked lighting would have improved the scene further, however that may not be possible with this dynamic daytime system. You can see in scenes that likely did get a lot of attention from the designers such as the grand panorama at 3:28 that raytracing's impact is considerably lower. In the end raytracing will outrun rasterization as manually designing an acceptable quality will get more and more time-consuming for the designers, while raytracing is becoming more and more affordable in terms of GPU power, and with us now being at the beginning of a transitioning phase with more things gradually getting handed over to raytracing.

      Great Opinion here, Ray tracing is for sure the futur of gaming but not of all games. Linear game such as TLOU 2 don't need this kind of tech for now since the lighting job can be doing manually and better as well. Raytracing is great for replacing the good ol' daytime system usually used in open worlds game for his time saving aspect.
      Basically the idea of Raytracing is not only result based since a manual job can still do better, it's actually an interesting ratio between time/effort of development and result.

      Their BVH pipeline is insanely drawn out. It kinda needs to be tbh simply because the nature of the world design means long views are common and expected but its still impressive seeing just how many rays they shoot out and at which distances. Its one of the reasons i dont expect console RT implementations to even remotely hold up. Even ignoring that the only effect likely to make it is AO or emissive lighting the range at which said effect displays will be hobbled. Not hating on the consoles but their RT capabilities are very weak and while some devs have found creative ways around it cyberpunks brutally uncompromising approach to RT isnt likely to scale as easily

      @v o r didn't necessarily mean you as I don't really know you but there's enough dummies keeping this trash afloat. It's not tech that is necessary right now and no one should be talking about it. The downfalls easily outweigh the advantages. Unless someone is already getting 300FPS on their 1080p panel, then I'd argue that they should be putting that money into getting a 1440p or above monitor rather than sending their dollars to die to Nvidia on tech that is not worth it at all.

      RT can be an improvement in some scenarios, but it's a very minor improvement as a whole, and at this point in time nothing more than a very expensive gimmick. And I'd rather play in 144 FPS than 60 just in order to make window reflections look slightly sharper.

      I don't think it's to do with first person so much but more to do with performance. I do a bit of work in 3d modelling and UE and know how reflections tend to be generated - and it's usually using reflection probes, which sort of create the illusion of a reflection onto a 2d surface - similar to how buildings look like they have 3d interiors but it's actually just a dynamic texture which changes according to where the camera is. The trouble is, reflection probes are not great at picking up animated objects without reducing the quality of the image From my experience anyway.

    In my opinion, where ray tracing is most beneficial in it's effort to immerse is not in the reflections, but in the occlusions and contact shadows. I think I am fine with what games have been doing in terms of mirror reflections where it's just a vague silhouette of the characters and I catch myself focusing more shadows with in shadows and the dimming of light where light would be less effective and scattering of colors. I'm not sure if it's possible but it would probably be less expensive to leave out the reflections and focus on the ray traced shadows.

      Yeah. Rt doesn't just "look good" but let's do the GPU lots of the simulation without any trick. Just look at the color of the car that goes on the wall... That's not something you usually do with old techniques. The issue is that it weights a lot, so that means for devs that they have to develop the game on the RT side and "normal" side because today's GPU especially medium and low GPUs haven't the horsepower to keep 60 fps stable in RT

    1:26 - someone "technical" please explain this to me. Half Life 2 - more than 15 years ago had reflections that didn't have SSRS issues (and Ray tracing being the most accurate but taxing option). What kind of reflection tech did Steam use ages ago for Half life 2, and why don't we just use that? For 15 years ago - those reflections still hold up.

    • @RayTracingRevolution
      @RayTracingRevolution  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Half Life 2 used Planar Reflections instead of SSR, which most simply put renders the scene twice. Definitely doable when you have more enclosed level design and gives great results. But the more complex the scene, the more taxing it gets on performance, and its mostly used on a single flat surface, like water. As far as I know, with complex geometry and terrain in open world games its difficult to realize today, which is why basically everything large scale uses SSR + cubemaps

    I´d still argue that, for the performance hit you take, it adds very little graphic fidelity to the overall experience. I mean like the water reflections looks amazing but the game itself doesn´t evolve around that and other areas have a far lesser difference while still tanking fps.
    There is potential but it´s still not there yet. It is sort of like the first anti aliasing, that no card back then could use without tanking massive in fps while the benefit wasn´t noticeable in fast paced games anyways.

    Interesting. I like it, however, I do feel that in some cases, RT sacrifices how many polygons are rendered for the much higher amount of rays being drawn. That seems to cause certain objects, such as tiles, to become much more reflective towards the viewing angle than it should, while rasterization clearly shows that tile is very rough. Of course, this will improve with time, but I can't wait to see what improvements will be made. 🙂

    It's still so superficial. Take @00:55 for example: you can clearly see the low poly model on the storm drains and concrete overhang on the right. No amount of ray tracing can fix that. I'd prefer to see games with higher poly count models before RT tbh.

    Great display of how RT actually is very noticable. A few months ago LTT did a video about how noticable RT is and fed RT enbaled games to people in a blind test and told them to tell the RT on scene apart from teh RT off scene. Their test was biased though because they only chose games that do RT shadows and RT ambient lights like Shadow of the Tomb Raider or Metro. They included neither Control nor Cyberpunk in the test. Two games that display greatly that there is a noticable quality differenece between RT on and RT off. As far as RT and it's usage goes imho Cyberpunk so far is the benchmark especeially when it comes to mixing RT reflections, shadows and lighting, which very few games have done so far.
