The University of Pretoria Camerata, conducted by Michael Barrett, singing the traditional IsiSwati song, Siyalobola Gogo.
This brand new version of the song, as arranged by Michael Barrett for the Camerata, forms part of the choir's repertoire for 2015.
The song deals with the African concept of Lobola, the practice of paying a girl's family for her hand in marriage. In the song, different suitors compete for a girl's hand. - เพลง
The tonality of the beginning soloists is very authentic. Thank you for letting us hear this.
Glad you enjoyed
These choirs are excellent no matter which languages they sing in . Be proud South Africa .
The Camerata continues to kill the game!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Cream of the crop!!, I'm worried I might graduate without having watched these people live.
This choir is representative... bravo to the choir and conductor. This is a fresh approach to music; not only choristers Learn to sing a language they don’t know, they also accommodate, embrace and accept each other through song. Bravo TUKS👌🏿👏🏽👍🏿🤜🏽🤛🏾... please come to my school to perform🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈... you are indeed amazing 😉
South African choirs. The best.
In Swati tradition, this is what a groom's family says when approaching the bride's family to pay the stipulated dowry. Its a spoken thing, rather than sung.
"Siyalobola Gogo
Lukhalo luphele,
sine lugege nensulamnyembeti
Aw'bheke nawe Maketala
Sine lugege ne nsulamnyembeti"
Translated as
"We are here to pay dowry
We have the required amount of cattle
Even with Lugege (a cow to be slaughtered for feasting) and insulamnyembeti (a cow to wipe the mother-in-laws tears)
Mother-in-law, see for yourself
We have lugege and insulamnyembeti".

Mfundo Kunene thank for the translation. What does Maketala mean
If the Bride Groom's Family come singing and dancing this for my Daughter's or nieces' hand in marriage it'll be much appreciated by us all, most especially by Gogo. 😊

🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Can anyone please let me know what the song means? I know lobola means dowry or bride price
I can't really hear them, but they're telling the grandmother that they're paying full lobola including 'insulanyembeti' is more like something they give the bride's family to comfort them from taking away their daughter. Something like this, hope it helps.
Impressive Maxwell has nailed it. To be precise the insulamnyembeti is for the brides mother. The words Maxwell maynot be hearing are : "awubheke maketala, sinelugege nensulanyembeti" meaning come out mother in law and look we have the full lobola.
This was surely the dream of a free, equal South Africa that the likes of Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, OR Tamabo, Govan Mbeki fought & gave their lives for. Sadly, that dream lies unrealised, betrayed, unaccomplished & trampled-upon by the ANC they put in charge. Painful!
