Weathering a Special Boxcar

  • Jason, aka "The Train Freak" and I are going to be shipping to and from industries on each other's layouts. He models the Cotton Belt in Arkansas, and I the Seaboard Airline in Richmond, Virginia. We have a couple of the same freight cars, one of the Cotton Belt and one of the SAL. We've each created waybills shipping a load of furniture from Y Junction, AR on Jason's layout to a goods warehouse on mine, and before we each filmed it, I thought it would be a good idea to weather mine.
    I follow a lot of techniques I have learned from John Crowdis on JC's Rip Track, and I highly recommend checking his channel out.
    For this weathering job, I just wanted a moderately faded look, as the car's build date makes it about 12 years old on my layout. I employed a dot fade over a satin clear coat to tone down the brightness and make it look like it has been in the sun for a dozen years. Next I gave it a gloss coat to seal in the fade and used a pin wash to bring out the details. Both of those methods employ oil paints. After that, I gave it a matte coat and airbrushed some acrylics for a light dusting of the trucks, wheels, underbody, and along the bottom of the sides and ends. Not a contest model, but it certainly gives a good bit of realism to an inexpensive Accurail kit!

      Jason is right, I saw it on eBay fairly cheap and had to have it on my layout in his honor. Once I had it, I sent a pic to him and the whole operational exchange thing spawned from there.

    The car turned out beautifully, John! Still to this day I’m surprised how such simple steps can elevate a car from looking fake and plastic to something that all of us would love to have on our own layout. And with the exception of waiting for paint to dry, took nearly no time at all.
    Thanks for the tips on the floor polish as well! I hadn’t seen that anywhere and might be something to steal from you as I start weathering up cars and whatnot on my layout. I love John’s channel and I must have missed that suggestion at some point over the last few years. Thanks for taking the time to highlight it.
    Appreciate you and your modeling. Be well my friend,
    Sean

    • @johnarthur6302
      @johnarthur6302  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Sean, It is not especially difficult - as you say, a couple evenings of 30-45 minutes including airbrush clean up and it was done. A wiser man than me would take on a couple at a time.
      Yeah John C - in the intro to weathering playlist on his channel - talks about his homemade clear coats. I use his formulas!

    I have weathered over two hundred cars for my layout and I’m not sure if anyone becomes an “expert” at it. It does surprise me that a modeler can use a variety of methods and still end up with a nicely weathered car. I’ve never tried the method you used and probably never will, but I enjoyed watching the process.
    I think the hard part of weathering cars is to vary the intensity of the weathering so that they don’t all look the same.
    Some of my cars were “weathered “ with only a coat of gloss coat since they were fresh from the company paint shop.
    Keep up the good work 😊

      Thank you Wendell, I surely will. I intend to mix and match some other techniques, and I think you are right - getting variety will be a challenge.

    Wow what looked easy. I want to try it out on one of my cheep cars. Have you thought of using a driftwood color on the tack board around the car? Like on at door. If you paint the middle of the tack board, and leave the ends that hold the board in place. I just adds just a little more to the look. Thanks for sharing.

    • @johnarthur6302
      @johnarthur6302  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was pretty easy - just a little block of time for a couple nights and it was done. Agreed on the cheap cars, that is all I have dared weather thus far! I like the thought on painting the tack boards, I have thought about it but had not figured out yet how to do it. I will try this.

      @@johnarthur6302 It just needs to be a flat gray. You will love the loo. On two of my cars after I did it. I took some paper and cut out a little squares and glued it on so it looked like instructions were added to the tack boards. Enjoy. Oh I really enjoy your vids. Keep them coming.

    Seems like some clever young person could develop an application where users enter their industries, what they need and/or ship, and at what frequency and we could have a nation-wide interchange network. So, somebody get hot on that please.
