Funny thing is, if this was full animation and marketed as an 80s retrowave throwback, this would be hailed as being ahead of its time.
If an anime studio like Madhouse ever decides to rerelease this as an anime, it would be a MASTERPIECE!!!
I feel like if it was an indie movie with a very low budget, or a TH-cam video, the bad CGI would be better received even if it is very unbelievable (literally). But the movie had a $30 million budget. I guess movies are expensive to create with all the actors and staff but still.
This movie is PEAK y2k futurism.

@zzoinks I think the I read the reason the cgi was so bad is because cause Sony panicked and cut the budget. All things considered 30 million isn't that much for a movie, especially for such a cgi heavy movie. Sure you can do a lot with a low budget if you know how use it, but you probably won't get great cgi effects out of it
Ultraviolet was underrated and way ahead of its time. It's amazing what they could do with the playstation 2 even back then.

It was rated poorly because of the idiotic action design, moronic physics, terrible fight choreography, and above all, a largely un-fun storytelling. Visual environments and wardrobe was pretty compelling, though.

I enjoyed it. It did not have to be super realistic like some expect. I mean she is a vampire and the weapons are more powerful than the average ones we have in real life. I liked the film because it was over the top.

I kinda like the idea behind the aesthetic they're going for, but it just doesn't work due to it being released completely unfinished. Literally, from what I understand some of these shots are not only not finished... it's actually basically just the actors being pasted on top of unfinished renders and animatics. The studio evidently didn't like the more deliberate original R-rated assembly cut, so they forced the director to cut out nearly 30 minutes of crucial scenes and rushed the release date, meaning they didn't have enough time to finish most of the effects.
From what I gather, the movie was going for a sort-of "comic book come to life" aesthetic, and you can see that's what they're going for. With completed effects and some better color-timing, this actually could be a fun, over-the-top movie.

This was actually bad in the mid 2000s. They released it unfinished in the visual effects department. This is something that even in 1996 would have looked silly.

No way a helicopter can fly sideways as fast as a motorcycle racing forward.
And no way a helicopter can climb upwards as fast as a motorcycle racing forward.
Also, why did the helicopter crew say "oh, $#it", and get all worried that she's going to race straight at them? The helicopter literally rises as fast as a racing motorcycle.
Finally, how can she not get hit by the gattling gun's bullets as her bike is flying right towards them in the helicopter? Are they purposely trying to miss?
The director and the action design team must have had a lot of hate for physics.

"Lack or realism" wasn't my arguments made in my initial comment. My disdain was the disregard of basic logic, including physics.......which was repeatedly present throughout the course of the movie, particularly many fight sequences.

The T-Rex full body entering scene is considered so good that is up to today’s standards. I don’t pretend to be smartass, I studied this and that’s why I talk. But let’s say you are the disrespectful person you appear to be, and my opinion gives you a shit, then take some time of yours for the way too many videos filmmakers dedicated praising JP1 effects. Then you will be in position to discuss.
@@LautaroTessi From what I understand, the studio basically took the movie away from the director, severely edited it down and didn't give the effects teams enough time to finish the movie. They just wanted something to dump into theaters. For some of these shots, it's literally just the actors being pasted over the top of animatics and animation tests. So it looks awful... but it's one of those situations where it's not really their fault. They were denied the time and funds needed to complete the film.
Yet another daft bike chase scene.. why oh why to film makers insist on getting a bike they think would look cool in a movie, and then add a very different bike engine over the top? This bike is a twin, not a four! schoolboy errors😆

@@murderhornets1166 Um... no. Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Apollo 13 and Titanic are just a few movies featuring masterful use of CGI which were all released 10 years or more before this crap. Heck, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King was released in 2003. This is NOT good CGI for 2006. It's terrible.
It isn't ment to be. It is based on a comic book. So they used some lower quality video and CGI to try to emulate the graphics used in comic books
