Nope Never who you stood for this Eurovision? Please answer this or you'll be considered a troll from this moment here on out. P.S.: I've used proper grammar so you wouldn't pull the "grammar nazi" card
“Higher Ground” is an interpretation of The Viking Age with references to an old Viking legend where some Vikings chose not to fight with weapons but chose peace instead. The message is strong and forever applicable; an invitation to seek peaceful solutions to conflicts and is inspired by the legend of Viking Magnus Erlendsson.

Love all the Viking symbolism! There's even a reference to Hávamál (the sayings of Odin) in "freeze the arrow in the air." Odin mentions he knows a spell to do just that in verse 149. Also, the song got 9th place…and 9 was a sacred number to the Vikings. Really happy for Israel, but this one's still far and away my favorite song from this year.

This was prehaps the best song out of all of them. The only real issue I had was that they weren't really dressed like vikings. After all, this was based on the story of a pasifist Nordic. But alas, people are more into chickens than peace and epic singing. Much respect from a Norwegian viking!
I'm sorry, I forgot Eurovision was all about the visual and light shows. :') And my opinion regarding the jury votes isn't just because of Denmark, there were other songs that deserved so much more.
It did certainly show the difference with the jury and the people. They were close to last with just the jury votes, but the people's vote smashed them all the way up to the 8th place.
Working on one on my violin. Holy crap this song is hard :P Listning by ear and then trying to translate it. Got the first part (chorus and the starter) still some way to go.
Since it is Eurovision season, I came back here to say I had the previlege to meet Rasmussen and his "soldiers" in Lisbon after the Contest. He was super nice and down to earth! He deserved a higher place in a Contest. I became a fan after this.
Amazing homeland song! Remind me Portugal and time of discoveries in the sea... I feel proud about you guys. ABSOLUTE AMAZING! Unique and music history of country! 12 Points from Portugal
"Higher Ground" was inspired by, and loosely based on, the story of a 12th century viking warrior called Magnus Erlendsson (earl of Orkney), as told in the "Orkneyinga" and two other Norse Sagas. According to these sources, Magnus converted (at some point) to Christianity, and became known as a benevolent leader, who preferred to solve conflicts by peaceful/non-violent means. Many of his rivals and former friends ridiculed him for his (supposed) "weakness" (the song's lyrics specifically refer to this). Magnus was eventually executed by his cousin (and co-ruler of Orkney), Haakon Paulsson. He was later declared a Christian saint/martyr. The famous "St. Magnus Cathedral", located at Kirkwall (Orkney Islands, present-day Scotland) is named after him. The song is great (one of my favorites this year). I hope it'd inspire people to learn a bit more about Nordic history, culture and mythology. It's a fascinating subject :-)
Thank you for your elaboration on this great song and history of the peaceful viking warrior who respected non-barbarian way of handling things! "Freeze the arrow in the air" is all time message that question one´s believe system and mismatched values of peace. Earl´s conversion to Christianity and his proclamation to a martyr-saint speaks about his peaceful character, loyalty to God´s Commands to cherish life even at the costs of his own. The song is great, has appealing character and the performance is stunning. Therefore, even if competing with different, other great entries in ESC final is going to be hard or a desirable outcome such is winning the contest fails, Rasmussen and Danish "crew" will for sure present their epic masterpiece in a best way possible and hopefully have a great time being a significant part of this show. God bless!
Layla Amador are u kidding? We are living in the modern world. Ireland is not Celtic anymore and Scandinavia/Denmark is definitely not Nordic anymore xD
Kenshinhugo. “Scandinavia / Denmark is not Nordic anymore”. Wasn't aware that the Geographic’s had changed, pole shift? But thanks for info, I need to tell this to the Nordic Council, they obvious don’t know what you know.
Believe me we’re trying! However our Eurovision is rigged. Out votes are split into two. The Danish people and some panel of woke moralists. So for instance, Denmark wanted to send a cool rock band to Eurovision this year, but the woke moralists on the panel all voted for this pink tiktokker so we ended up representing with him!

I believe this will go through to the final with ease. It will stand out by both staging and mood of the song. Solid thought out package. And who doesn't like to sing along in a good woo-oo-ooo? Well done Denmark!
DANK Thames honestly it sounds like something that would come out of Hollywood. It's not an authentic piece of viking music. It's generic and has no national identity. It was actually originally supposed to be part of melodifestevalen for Sweden but got rejected and honestly I can see why. Sweden knows what it does best and it's not trying to send something that's supposed to sound traditional to eurovision.
I´m really hoping they will get Nicolai Coster Waldau to present the jury votes, that would be epic. Give a thubms up if you agree and get DR to ask Nicolai.
I still have no idea what juries of all the 43 countries were thinking. Israels song is entertaining and a bit weird, but Denmarks performance is truly amazing. I love the vocals and the vibe of the whole thing. I am furious that juries liked Sweden performer. (Sorry Sweden, but I really disliked the guy. Typical pop song with a pretty face.) But I also liked Cyprus. Gave me Beyonce and Shakira feeling tbh. (Nothing bad, but really? Why Israel? I mean I get it, but......why?)
I agree with you, this song expresses our culture and out true values, but unfortunately the people in Europe don't know them, because you seem to have forgotten the Viking Age and all the nations that the vikings founded: Normandy, Russia, The Kingdom of Sicily, Iceland etc...
Yeh, I like Sweden as a country lol, but this year's song was just a bit boring. Same goes for Norway - sorry, Rybak, i know you've got potential, but this song just wasn't how to write a song.
This ended up being my favourite of the year. It was great to see it live. The fake snow and wind machines were very refreshing after standing in the crowd so long :)
It's between Denmark and Greece so far, not doubt about it. Love this powerful song, sounds like Vikings melody... Next year it will be Copenhagen or Athens! Love from Portugal, the host country!
Αν εχεις Ιδεες 1 side says Denmark other says Greece... it is 50% for each... you have the upper hand, your song is amazing, 100% Greek... and greek song's lyrics are brutal... :)
I don't understand all the lyrics but this song sounds like it gives a lot of hope. The melody is just..perfect. I voted for the Danemark, but unfortunately it was not enough.. However this isn't the last time that I listen this song. Kiss from France
the French song, mercy were also good in my book, and the song is about a Christian viking that existed way back of course, he denounced violence and stayed at the ships while the other viking attacked and plundered the britts as far as i know, he hoped others would follow him, so this song is about us as danes we keep our frontier spirits and be the first to break ground in many areas, but denounce violence and be the peace full people we have become over the years.
gunnerthedenmark Yes I think that Mercy was a good song too (and I don't say that because of my name haha) but I think this one wasn't able to won these year, the others song were absolutely awesome! And thank you for the explanation!
Rasmussen, is a Danish singer and represented Denmark in particular at the Eurovision :) Because ESC is a European contest, you see other flags, also I'd imagine Scandinavia would feel particularly connected to this song because of the Nordic and Viking theme in it hence Swedish and Icelandic flags

Working on one on my violin. Holy crap this song is hard :P Listning by ear and then trying to translate it. Got the first part (chorus and the starter) still some way to go.
Maya Hvidtfeldt Good job!
David Schjodt please: no covers
i can't wait for an epic movie for this song
Since it is Eurovision season, I came back here to say I had the previlege to meet Rasmussen and his "soldiers" in Lisbon after the Contest. He was super nice and down to earth! He deserved a higher place in a Contest. I became a fan after this.
Amazing homeland song! Remind me Portugal and time of discoveries in the sea... I feel proud about you guys. ABSOLUTE AMAZING! Unique and music history of country!
12 Points from Portugal
I have no idea how many times i have listened to this...but here i am.. again and again!
Rasmussen for winner.
Greetings from Germany
I’m still in love with this song...2 years later...still listen to it regularly.
Oost Lavriks
Ah man, disappointed that it was a christian one (don't ask)
God bless!
Thanks
Honestly all I look for in a Eurovision song is an epic key change. These guys win in my eyes 👐
My winners! GO VIKINGS 💙💙🙌🏻
Vikings spit right in the Odin's halls, if they hear such sugary songs in a foreign language!
lettrice di periferia greetins from Russia!!!! Realy nice!!!
From Russia with love!!!

lettrice di periferia I agree

*Obi-Wan Kenobi* :- It's over Rasmussen! I have the High Ground!

You underestimate my power!
@@heinzdoofenshmirtz8643 what inators are you working on
12 Points from Germany!
Can't wait to go to Denmark for Eurovision next year!
It's a special-unique song which will stand out for sure...
Kᴏɴsᴛ Oɪᴋ the song is about a viking his name was Victor back in the viking age
Thomas
That's great!
I'd like to see this with an another staging but i think Denmark will keep this one and won't change it 😁
Kᴏɴsᴛ Oɪᴋ or perhaps they will, and that would be an upward enhancement and not vice versa, that's for sure😀😉
This song is very underrated by EuroVision, this deserved to win, and i know that i am not the only one that thinks that.
I just love the song
This has to be the only musical act I’ve seen that ever represented their country
Layla Amador are u kidding? We are living in the modern world. Ireland is not Celtic anymore and Scandinavia/Denmark is definitely not Nordic anymore xD
Kenshinhugo Historical musical act would fit better. And to be honest this songs has Viking vibes all around it
Well with a sentence in ICELANDIC of course it represents DENMARK
Kenshinhugo. “Scandinavia / Denmark is not Nordic anymore”. Wasn't aware that the Geographic’s had changed, pole shift? But thanks for info, I need to tell this to the Nordic Council, they obvious don’t know what you know.
Kenshinhugo we may be living in the modern world, but that doesn't mean we can't cherish the culture our ancestor handed down to us.
OMG I am absolutely freaking out because of this testosterone.. MY WINNER. No doubt. Endless love from Iceland.
I hope that this song will be at Grand final ‘cuz it has history and beat is different than those empty pop songs , good luck Rasmussen!!
Almost 5 years on and I still think this was the best Eurovision song ever. It should have won. It gives me goosebumps every time!
But Israel was good winner in my opinion
But they forgot to actually choreograph a dance.
It didn't need a dance, it was all about the music and the voices.
Wow. I’m pretty sure I’m voting on this song. It gave me goosebumps. Congratz from Portugal. 🇵🇹
Winner is coming.
I really want denmark to win they have for me best stage of esc 2014
Denmark! If you see this, PLEASE send more songs like this, please!
Kind of didn't get anything out of it, so I doubt we ever will again sadly... nonetheless the best performance us Danes ever had.
Along with the one in 2013 it was also quite good
Why do i feel extra chest hair growing every time i hear this music?
That's your inner viking coming through
Tiago Nuncio OMGGG
Angela Bent literally the funniest comment chain I’ve ever read
My dad used to tell me that Coffee was the trick to full chest hair but it was only fluff till I heard this song 🙌🏻
@@thehellsraven you're not a real viking till you board your longboat to adventure around the world and maybe pillage an english village for pocket gold on your way through the english channel
Ships in the making
Bound for a distant shore
World for the taking
Men gone forever more
Boarding and setting sail
Yet victory won’t prevail (Oh oh oh)
Freeze the arrow in the air
Make your mark and leave it hanging there (Oh oh oh)
Be the first to turn around
Take the leap to land on higher ground
(Take to land on higher ground)
(Taka stökk til hærri jörð, taka)
(Taka stökk til hærri jörð, taka)
Call in, surrender
Still it won’t feel like defeat
Men laying down their swords
Each of their own accord (Oh oh oh)
Freeze the arrow in the air
Make your mark and leave it hanging there (Oh oh oh)
Be the first to turn around
Take the leap to land on higher ground
(Take to land on higher ground)
Raise the banner to the sky
Face the fear and hold your head up high
Oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh oh oh, oh oh oh
Take the leap like you were bound for higher ground
(Taka stökk til hærri jörð, taka)
(Taka stökk til hærri jörð, taka)
Freeze the arrow in the air
Make your mark and leave it hanging there
Freeze the arrow in the air
Make your mark and leave it hanging there (Oh oh oh)
Be the first to turn around
Take the leap to land on higher ground, yeah
Be the first to turn around
Take the leap and land on higher ground

Will always love this song, should have won that year, still listening and it's my little boy's favorite since he was a toddler ❤️
Good taste in music :)
This song must win eurovision !!!!
I believe this will go through to the final with ease. It will stand out by both staging and mood of the song. Solid thought out package. And who doesn't like to sing along in a good woo-oo-ooo? Well done Denmark!
love that soooo much! 12 points from France!
Jonas Flodager Rasmussen, The Viking of the North, True winner of Eurovision 2018
This song is so amazing. Good luck on Eurovision Denmark!
Greetings from Latvia.
My 12 pts from Spain are for Denmark so far! I love it!!!
WINNER OF THE EUROVISION 2018!! For sure!! 12 points from Poland!!
Nah somehow a song called Toy won
One of the best Eurovision songs of all times! Love from Sweden 🥰
ALL SCANDINAVIANS LET'S GET OUR BROTHER TO DENMARK WIN WITH THIS SCANDINAVIAN MUSIC
YESS....!!!
As a Germanic, I'll join you
Oh hell yes i will get my wooden sword I got at a Viking conference!
A true Viking song ♡♡
DANK Thames honestly it sounds like something that would come out of Hollywood. It's not an authentic piece of viking music. It's generic and has no national identity. It was actually originally supposed to be part of melodifestevalen for Sweden but got rejected and honestly I can see why. Sweden knows what it does best and it's not trying to send something that's supposed to sound traditional to eurovision.
I can hear Odin clapping in Valhalla🍻!!
I´m really hoping they will get Nicolai Coster Waldau to present the jury votes, that would be epic. Give a thubms up if you agree and get DR to ask Nicolai.
lindsey0806 If Sweden was so smart they'd have picked statements last year
I really like it
I still have no idea what juries of all the 43 countries were thinking. Israels song is entertaining and a bit weird, but Denmarks performance is truly amazing. I love the vocals and the vibe of the whole thing.
I am furious that juries liked Sweden performer. (Sorry Sweden, but I really disliked the guy. Typical pop song with a pretty face.)
But I also liked Cyprus.
Luisa Milella well I'd be happy if you bring some more of your culture to the contest next year
It would be a honor to host you
as a swede I can truly agree with u...Benjamin was not the best...but not to sound mean or anything but Cyprus and Israel both sucked ass
GoldCraft55 I absolutely agree with you
The real winner of Eurovision
Go Denmark!
This ended up being my favourite of the year. It was great to see it live. The fake snow and wind machines were very refreshing after standing in the crowd so long :)
See you in Copenhagen 2019. Love this. 12points from Norway 💜
Love this song. Denmark and Germany are my favourites with no doubt!
Good luck from Spain!
Tania r.guez guimarey Good Luck too Spain! Greethings for denmark👏✌👍

It's between Denmark and Greece so far, not doubt about it.
Love this powerful song, sounds like Vikings melody...
Next year it will be Copenhagen or Athens! Love from Portugal, the host country!
jonathan Oliveira thank you soooo much from Greece.Have you chosen your song for this year?
Αν εχεις Ιδεες 1 side says Denmark other says Greece... it is 50% for each... you have the upper hand, your song is amazing, 100% Greek... and greek song's lyrics are brutal... :)
Going for Greece too!! Amazing song (I'm from Denmark so wouldn't be bad if Denmark won though)
jonathan Oliveira I like Greece, but it's too repetitive for me and I haven't seen and heard a live performance. Denmark is my favourite so far.
THIS SONG IS THE WINNER I FEEL IT
Ur vid brought me here. Thought u should know.

One of the best Eurovision songs ever. Period.
I am in love with this song.
Greetings from the northern part of Germany (Flensburg).
I don't understand all the lyrics but this song sounds like it gives a lot of hope. The melody is just..perfect.
I voted for the Danemark, but unfortunately it was not enough..
However this isn't the last time that I listen this song.
Kiss from France
Mercy FREEZE THE ARROW IN THE AIR, MAKE YOUR MARK AND LEAVE IT HANGING THEREE OOOOOOOOOO😂😂😂
the French song, mercy were also good in my book, and the song is about a Christian viking that existed way back of course, he denounced violence and stayed at the ships while the other viking attacked and plundered the britts as far as i know, he hoped others would follow him, so this song is about us as danes we keep our frontier spirits and be the first to break ground in many areas, but denounce violence and be the peace full people we have become over the years.
gunnerthedenmark Yes I think that Mercy was a good song too (and I don't say that because of my name haha) but I think this one wasn't able to won these year, the others song were absolutely awesome!
And thank you for the explanation!
dont mention it,
We found the viking of this year, and the music is epic ☺
I'm from Israel and this was my favorite.
It's so extremely epic!
I just love the vibe.
And this is how DENMARK unites people of Europe ... and all the World!
Alina Gavrilenko ikr look at the flags they’re not all Denmark; Iceland and Sweden etc love the song just as much
Rasmussen, is a Danish singer and represented Denmark in particular at the Eurovision :) Because ESC is a European contest, you see other flags, also I'd imagine Scandinavia would feel particularly connected to this song because of the Nordic and Viking theme in it hence Swedish and Icelandic flags
ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED WITH THIS SONG 🇩🇰🖤
This song gives me all the feels, can not stop playing 💙definitely gets my 12 points. Good luck from the UK 🇬🇧
Honestly, this is one of the best songs & perfomances at Eurovision ever.
That's a real winner of Eurovision 2018 for me. Greetings from Ukraine!
I may vote in eurovision song contest for the first time in my life just to vote for this song.
me too!
Same here, i cant stop listening this song!
😊please do🇩🇰🇩🇰 and thank you
