I love Love LOVE Midori sketchbooks and I moved from a5 to a4 and I can't get enough. I'm in NYC next week and I'm going to hunt more of them down because getting hold of them here in Australia is like trying to find a leprechaun...a beautiful Copic displaying leprechaun.
ooh! I've tried most of the sketchbooks you've mentioned except the studio ghibli one. Out of all the sketchbooks I've tried, I highly HIGHLY recommend Stillman & Birn Zeta Series sketchbook. It is hardbound and has smooth 270gsm paper perfect for Dry media, wet media and ink!
Yes yes yes moleskine art plus sketchbooks are amazing! Sketchbooks are almost all I work in (some say it's a bad habit but I can't help it alright, haha), and I think they are SO worth the money. Also, they are on sale at Book Depository (online) almost all the time so I get mine there!
I tried sooo many different sketchbooks and couldn't find what I actually want. So I decided to make my own sketchbooks with my favorite papers! It was not that easy at first to make book bindings but now I used to it :)
Fran, I think you should try the Crescent Rendr sketchbook. Super smooth paper and marker doesn't even show on the back, so you can use both sides of the paper! Not sure what kind of magic they pour into that paper, but it's lovely! Only thing I don't like is the sharp corners, I'm a rounded corner person. I actually rounded each page with a corner punch, because I'm weird like that 😂 and another plus for you: it's a US produced sketchbook so I had to go through some hoops to get it here in Europe.
Didn't you try it already during your last trip to NYC? I remember the video! LOL Fran, once you're in the states you can order stuff from Jetpens.com You can get your sketchbooks and all the amazing pens there! Also Tokyopenshop.com sells Japanese stuff that you can't in the USA. I shop in the US a lot even tho I live in Canada! LOL Love you and have a safe trip to NYC! XO
I'm right at that beautiful moment when my current sketchbook has only a few pages left and I need to embark into some paper hunting, so thank you so so much for this video, Fran!! I love your reviews, please never stop talking about the things you love 💛
I got the Midori on your suggestion and I’m really enjoying it. My favorite sketchbook right now is the stillman and birn zeta. Thick thick very smooth zero texture paper I love it. I use mostly graphite & watercolor. I also use markers and colored pencils. At times I use acrylic paint and collage. That baby handles it all. Another nice one I enjoy is the Strathmore mixed media. It has a slight texture when it’s wet that you may not love.
Fran you absolutely need to try pink pig sketchbooks before you leave ! It’s very affordable and good quality and you can choose the paper to put inside!
Wow I've never heard of this sketchbook. I always wanted to choose the type of paper that goes into my sketchbook. Glad there's a company out there that is already doing that lol
My favorite so far has been Strathmore. Their mixed-media isn't too textured at all which I love because even though it's smooth I can paint, use colored pencils or whatever I'm in the mood for! I recently got one online that has a spiral spine and a toned cover you can design yourself. Only thing I'd change is how thick the cover is on this design-your-own one I have. But I've had another one that had a regular, thicker cover. Another decent brand is Canson, but they have much more textured paper. That's not a dealbreaker for me usually, but I got a bit annoyed with how it made my sketches look.
I would 10/10 recommend the ‘seawhite artist journal’. Pros , Available on amazon prime and Jackson art store and website Only £7-8 Hard cover and elastic Paper is simple and perfect for most mediums Looks similar to a moleskin Available in a6-a3 Cons Markers do bleeds The spine of the book can be a lil hard to break in Man I love paper
Mollie have a look on Curtisward website, they sell Seawhite (and others) for cheaper than Jacksons! Just one thing, the "travel journal" version is not as good, paper is quite thin and there will be some "ghost" even with light pencil sketches...
At some point I want to visit Japan and one of the places I want to visit is definitely the Ghibli museum. Will definitely keep that lovely sketchbook in mind whenever I go! This review was super helpful, thank you for sharing Fran~
an amazing dupe for sketchbooks like moleskine are the Talens art creations sketchbooks!!! THEY ARE AMAZING and soo cheap compared to others. Nice thick paper, sturdy, super soft cover etc etc the only thing i mind a liiiitle bit is the off-white colour of the paper but it is very nice and comes in all different sizes!
Fran abrazando libretas hace que me sienta menos sola en el mundo :D El papel que a mí me encanta para rotuladores es el bristol de Canson, creo que te gustaría, es muuuuuuuuy suave
I loved this paper talk 🙂 I have a sketchbook for you to try! If you like the Moleskine, you’ll like the Leuchttrum1917 sketchbook! The paper is thick, very smooth and bright white. It also comes in many cool colors and a hardcover. I have used colored pencil, Copic markers, and the paper is super nice. love it! I hope you try it. Happy Drawing!
You are probably my favorite youtuber of all time!!! Just sitting with a cup of tea and watching your videos puts me in such a good mood and makes me want to draw again
I feel so sad you are leaving the UK! I can't believe it is nearly time for you to start your new adventure. Don't forget us here in Blighty when you are in the Big Apple. Good luck with the move and hope you get settled in quickly x
The Canson XL Mixed Media sketchbook is also good in my opinion. It can hold water color pretty well, and I love that the sketchbook is a spiral one, so that you can fold it, or you can put it completely flat down on a surface! It’s a nice sketchbook :)
The Mossery sketchbooks are stunning! But I could never use them. I'm a lefty and that piece of metal holding it together would just be in the way of my drawinghand.
For marker based sketchbooks with *absolutely no bleed* I recommend Rendr, they're perfect for alcohol markers and such. You can use watercolor on it if you're careful because since it is mainly for markers, the pages when watercolor is on it can spread and dry abit (or a lot) spotty. Gouache is also very good on it too!
I was in a funk in this video totally got me laughing and feeling so much better so thank you! For US sketch books to try, I think you might like the Hand-book trav-e-logue series, It’s got a fabric hardcover with an elastic band and it is sexy as F! It’s like the sketchbook version of a little black dress. It’s my current favorite for drawing. And when I want to use wet media, I am in love with the Stillman & Birn Delta series. The paper holds up to quite a bit of water and it’s not too textured and my favorite part is that it lays flat.
All your videos make me so happy Fran, I feel like we're friends hanging out and you always inspire me like crazy! best of luck to you guys moving to the US, God bless you
dude the Ghibli sketchbook is in the colours of Chihiro's clothing that's so cool ! thanks for showing us it, hope I can get it sometime if I ever get to go to Japan sometime in the future
I remember there was a time not so long ago that I was so obsess with buying different kind of sketchbooks. I'm yet to try the moleskin sketchbook. Love your building sketches and your art in general.
I have really enjoyed the Moleskine Art Plus for my daily journaling. Currently, I'm custom making a sketchbook with the paper I use to draw in because NO ONE supplies an actual book made up of these papers. I feel so bougie. Love the info! I hope you're enjoying NY!
Hi Fran, I don't know if you're still interested in sketchbook suggestions but I've been using the pentalic travelers sketchbook for a long time and I love it. It has smooth paper, zero texture and the pages are thick. It also has an elastic band and even though it's a softcover, the cover is thick and sturdy.
I recommend: Crescent rendR sketchbooks which don’t bleed thru with copic markers or any markers and they paper has a smooth finish to the pages. The sketchbook can be purchased from Blick art materials here in the US
I know you only use vertical a5 sketchbooks, but you should try the Illo sketchbooks. they are perfect squares and while the ink shows through the other side, the paper is actually bleed resistant so that you don't need a protective paper unless you're putting down a LOT of ink. Which from what i can tell, you use solid blocks of color, so you're safe! they come in 8x8 and 10x10 on amazon, and are very affordable. and the PAPER is oh so smoooooooooth
Love the video! I love paper too just like you! And I love the Moleskine art edition sketchbooks 💕 Try stillman and birn sketchbooks..they have variety of paper qualities, also try the strathmore sketchbooks 😊
The RENDR sketchbooks are said to be bleedproof but I did not test them yet. awesome review and I loved seeing your happiness about finishing so many sketchbooks and being productive ❤
Hello Fran ! I'm so happy about this video, I've been missing a good old talk about paper and sketchbook ! I feel you about the Mossery sketchbook, even though I haven't tried it, I tried recently a new sketchbook but realized there was so much texture I HATED IT haha. Even my outlines were weird, I hated the colors, the look of my illustrations etc. Hahaaa I just read in the description the "things you don't know about this video" and even though I'm not the one leaving haha I feel very nostalgic. I started watching your videos years ago, when you were still living in Berlin ( btw I watched these old videos recently - that I still loooove watching - and realized you made so much progress with English !!
Hi Fran, check out Muji, McNally Jackson bookstore and their fancy office supply store Goods for the Study, Blick art supplies, and also notebooks at the Strand when you’re in NY!!
Boesner has some amazing sketchbooks for markers etc. With thick and plain paper from their housebrand. Idk if you ever tested them. But they’re my favourites and I keep on buying them.
i don't know if someone already said this but i think you would love Crescent Rendr no show paper. It's pricy but the marker doesnt show through the other side of the paper and its very smooth. Its a little funky to get used to because the paper kind of goes gray when you apply wet stuff but dries normal.
Hi Fran, I recently discovered your channel and I want to say, ‘Thank You’ for creating videos that are informative, fun and makes me feel like a friend is talking to me :) Sometimes I watch your videos when I am doing art and it’s so nice to hear your voice as I am drawing. Also, welcome to the US! I am also from ‘the other side of the world’... haha! I am in California right now. I am a paper snob too... LOL. I would rather save to buy a nice sketchbook than just any sketchbook out there. I am so glad to know I am not alone :P The touch and feel and how the paper reacts to my painting materials is important to me so I totally get what you mean. Continue making great videos and sharing! Hope to meet you one day. LOVE your art too
I did't try the moleskin or Leuchtturm sketchbooks, but i loooove my art creation one. it's quiet cheap, so you don't feel obligated to draw perfect. I even can draw with acrilics in it, couse the paper is thick enough as long as you don't use too much water. And we all know that you have much more sketchbooks! i still whant to try the ogami one after you talked about it. Maybe for inktober х) i think it's the best time to treat yourself with some art supplies
YAAASSSS!!! Let's just nerd out about sketchbooks!😍👏🎨 You're so brave drawing in the Ghibli Museum sketchbook!!😮 I would chicken out and feel like it's too fancy for sketches.😅 Oh, also I just started a new sketchbook I was recommended and I'm loving it!! It's called the Leda art supply sketchbook from amazon. The paper is almost velvety feeling but really smooth.😍👌 Super lovely!💓💖✨✏📚
Hey Fran! :) Nice to see you back! Now with a new look dyed hair, like it! I've seen that you were interviewed by Iva in the Art Side of Life channel, very well n' congrats! Have a wonderful weekend! Blessings!!
I was kinda surprised you hated the Mossery so much as honestly I love them and have been buying them for a while. I mostly use markers, watercolour and gouache in it though so the texture isn’t an issue with wet mediums and I like that it’s thick enough not to warp. I share your love of paper, so it’s really nice to see a video talking about them as an investment which is so true, they’re definitely what I spend the most on as they’re what I use the most!
I love buying sketchbooks but i can never finish them! Too many pages! Also i can't get into drawing these days (maybe for the last 4 years) :( but i hate to fall out of drawing, its really disappointing. ALSO i love your videos, they're so chill to watch :)
Fran la croquera con textura es perfecta para los marcadores/fibras Faber Castell (de dos puntas con un color en cada punta) que son lápices y marcadoras para niños pero que son geniales!!! 😍
I love the moleskine art edition sketchbooks too! And I have to mentally convince myself that it’s okay to spend so much money on a sketchbook every time I get one 😂😂 but they just make me so happy! Glad I’m not alone 😅
I had a Moleskine sketchbook while I was in art school, and I loved it so much! I keep trying to find a cheaper alternative, but nothing has been as nice as the Moleskine.
Thanks Fran for the review! I am happy you talked about the moleskine art edition. I am using a normal one and i hate how the markers get an ugly granny texture when you paint on them. For sure my next sketchbook will be the art edition!
I found your channel when I was first getting into sketchbooks and being particular with paper. Even though we have very different opinions on papers, (I love textures) I still love you and your channel. ♥︎♥︎
Thank you for this very detailed review! If you want to try something new, my recommendations are definitely Canson Sketchbooks, they have good quality paper that comes in a thick hard cover, their Sketchbooks come in a variety of sizes and paper (type?) and they're also fairly cheap!
I loved watching this!!!! Thanks for being so genuine and real with your reviews!! I was wondering if you had any advice about how to power through and finish using a sketchbook that you don’t like? I have a bunch of sketchbooks gifted to me over the years that, for one reason or another, are not enjoyable for me to use. I’d like to finish them up just so they stop judging me from my shelves, but the dread is REAL. Thanks so much!!!
I’ve been using Midori’s for like four years now! The paper is so fantastic! I love nerding out about paper! Your sketchbooks are so beautiful 🙌 Fran, have you tried Tomoe River paper?? It’s a really awesome experience, especially with inks. If you ever delve into the world of fountain pens, you need that paper. Edit: for anyone wanting Midori md in the U.S., JetPens always has them.
My favorite sketch book is the Hahnemuhle Nostalgie. The paper is smooth and a nice weight. Good for all types of media. I do recommend! Not sure if its available in the US.
I wait for new video's every day, you are an inspiration for me, thank you so much for doing videos, I love see you working, cause motivated me so muuuch 💖 Love u
Hola Fran, yo uso - canson artbook 180 a5 - te lo recomiendo, sin texturas, y los poros súper cerrados por ende no pasan los colores del otro lado incluso usando acrílicos. Saludos!
I use the Canson sketchbook in I think is A5 and I have the best experience, the cover is hard and doesn't have spirals, but open really good, cause I really hate when you can open fully a sketchbook. I was very surprised, is not expensive and paper is very thin, but I use water color something and don't traspass the paper and the best is maybe that don't have texture. 🤭✨
Girl you need to try the Pentalic Traveler Pocket Journal! Super smooth and thick pages, and a really good price point. The journal has a softer cover (not hardback but not as soft as the moleskine you showed) but its very thicc and it has an elastic so it's super sturdy. Went from it to Moleskine and now I'm missing it. 😅 I bought my first one in a book store, but my second I got on Amazon in the US. Great video! 💛💛
Have you tried the Crescent Rendr sketchbook for copics/markers? It's my favorite sketchbook and it DOESNT BLEED or showthru! The best thing ever!!! I 😃😃😃
you should try the stillman and burn sketchbooks. They have a variety of papers, and theyre one of the only companies ive seen that have completely smooth mixed media paper.
Glad I'm not the only one who was a little disappointed with the Mossery sketchbook - it looks so pretty but just not really a fan of the paper and spiral binding! I love my Moleskine though - I'm all about the smooth paper...always use hotpress for watercolour too :D
I am enjoying this video secretly as a sketchbook tour hahahaha EDIT: she changed the name of the video aaaa now I'm not enjoying it so secretly anymore 😂
I love your cute art and adore you so much, Fran! So glad to hear you're moving to NY! Maybe I'll meet you in person one day in some convention or something. Haha. BTW, I'm Thai fan living in LA 😘😘😘
Fran, tienes que probar los cuadernos de MUJI que tienen el lomo rojo (sólo estos, el resto tienen el papel diferente). Valen poquísimo y se parece mucho al Midori.
"A wild Ed appeared!" :D Thanks for the fun video! But hey, when you say that a sketchbook has high-quality paper (that you love), what do you exactly mean? What is quality paper to you? Is it how it takes the color pigment of the markers or is it the smoothness or is it the thickness…? Please could you specify, I would like to hear it. ^_^ Thanks!
10:29 I think you mean embellished:) Hope this helps! embroidered - sewn in detail engraved - carved/cut/punched out detail embellished - additional decorative detail
Have you tried Seawhite of Brighton Travel journal? It's got hard cover and off-white pages - currently my favourite sketchbook! And much cheaper than Moleskine.
This moment with Ed 😅😅😅
I know! I was laughing XD
About time!! I missed Fran fangirling about papers 😂
:D
Ashmita Nandy I guess you could also say that she's *frangirling*
@@kaitlyntran7554 *please dont*
I love Love LOVE Midori sketchbooks and I moved from a5 to a4 and I can't get enough. I'm in NYC next week and I'm going to hunt more of them down because getting hold of them here in Australia is like trying to find a leprechaun...a beautiful Copic displaying leprechaun.
Jetpens
Tania 'Doodlezilla' Vincent are going to any particular store in ny?
They won't deliver to Australia so my poor mum has to send them to me :D But I stocked up in NYC...woohoo!
Thank you for the tip :D
I went to Kinokuniya near Bryant Park. It's a Japanese stationary store and book shop. I spent far too much money there.
The misery sketch book you have is the watercolor paper sketch book. They have a mixed media one that has smoother paper.
Already took a screen capture of the Stillman & Birn Zeta Series sketchbook thank you so much VS for your recommendatiooon! :O
you're welcome!

Hi Lillyyyy! YES I've seen loads of RENDR at Blicks and I really want to give them a go, thank you so much for recommending me those ones! :D
I remember that she bought one when she was in New York last time, but I don't know if she tried it yet. I think she'll actually really love it.
Didn't you try it already during your last trip to NYC? I remember the video! You're welcome, Fran! I think you will really like it. I keep touching the paper because it's so buttery smooth 😂 Paper nerds unite!
Nooooooo, Eeeeeeddddd😂 I adored this as ALWAYS, but that Ed disappointment was a great comical touch 😭😂
I'm right at that beautiful moment when my current sketchbook has only a few pages left and I need to embark into some paper hunting, so thank you so so much for this video, Fran!! I love your reviews, please never stop talking about the things you love 💛
I love how ed reacts when you said “one true love!” Really love you both fran!! ❤️❤️❤️
Seconded!! I used them exclusively for my final exam sketchbooks and they are a *joy* to work with. Really good for watercolours and markers!

I would love to watch a cartoon that has characters illustrated by you!! I LOOVE your style so much! It reminds me of my childhood! 💞💞💞
You're the sweetest, Fran! Have a great weekend, and I hope you and your husband have a safe trip.
I would 10/10 recommend the ‘seawhite artist journal’.
Pros ,
Available on amazon prime and Jackson art store and website
Only £7-8
Hard cover and elastic
Paper is simple and perfect for most mediums
Looks similar to a moleskin
Available in a6-a3
Cons
Markers do bleeds
The spine of the book can be a lil hard to break in
Man I love paper
oommggg it's also available in the US, so I'll try it there! (can't take more stuff in my suitcase hahaha) THANK YOU SO MUCH MOLLIEEEE!
hahaha aww you are so welcome !! xx

It has smooth paper, zero texture and the pages are thick. It also has an elastic band and even though it's a softcover, the cover is thick and sturdy.

Me he desconectado durante un año y que gozada tenerte aquí en mi pantalla de nuevo!!!
I don’t even draw but I find all your videos irresistable!
Love the video! I love paper too just like you! And I love the Moleskine art edition sketchbooks 💕 Try stillman and birn sketchbooks..they have variety of paper qualities, also try the strathmore sketchbooks 😊
I love the moleskine! The weight of the paper is perfect for my use of watercolour and coloured pencil.

Hey Fran! :)
Nice to see you back! Now with a new look dyed hair, like it!
I've seen that you were interviewed by Iva in the Art Side of Life channel, very well n' congrats!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Blessings!!
Hahah. Ed! I really love his subtle editing ;) I am no art person but I enjoy your channel immensely!
I am gonna color my hair pink like this ❤️
I also like smooth paper, so I appreciate the review of Mossery as I have been looking at them for a while.
I love buying sketchbooks but i can never finish them! Too many pages! Also i can't get into drawing these days (maybe for the last 4 years) :( but i hate to fall out of drawing, its really disappointing.
ALSO i love your videos, they're so chill to watch :)
Now I just want to buy a bunch of new sketchbooks 😂 I need to restrain myself and finish the one I’m currently on
YAYYYYYYYY these are my faveeeee videos you do frannnn Im also a nerd when it comes to papers! The midori is my FAVEEEExxx
Fran la croquera con textura es perfecta para los marcadores/fibras Faber Castell (de dos puntas con un color en cada punta) que son lápices y marcadoras para niños pero que son geniales!!! 😍
A good paper I love is strathmore mixed media paper with vellum surface!
I love the moleskine art edition sketchbooks too! And I have to mentally convince myself that it’s okay to spend so much money on a sketchbook every time I get one 😂😂 but they just make me so happy! Glad I’m not alone 😅
Before I dive deep into the video, I just wanted to say I love your hair!! The pink!!!
Your videos are the best. ❤ I start a drawing because my planner and your channel. And I love listen about drawing and things of drawing.
The question is, how do you manage to keep your sketches so nice and clean and put together? Like seriously, what the pencil 😀😀
forindet .
Thank you for this very detailed review!
If you want to try something new, my recommendations are definitely Canson Sketchbooks, they have good quality paper that comes in a thick hard cover, their Sketchbooks come in a variety of sizes and paper (type?) and they're also fairly cheap!
I've really enjoy of Art Creation, Royal Talens Sketchbook. It has thick paper and cover
I LOVE U FRAN YOU’RE AMAZING THANKS FOR ALWAYS SHARING WITH US
I loved watching this!!!! Thanks so much!!!
yassss a good ol' fran paper talk !
I’ve been using Midori’s for like four years now! The paper is so fantastic! I love nerding out about paper! Your sketchbooks are so beautiful 🙌
Fran, have you tried Tomoe River paper?? It’s a really awesome experience, especially with inks. If you ever delve into the world of fountain pens, you need that paper.
Edit: for anyone wanting Midori md in the U.S., JetPens always has them.
Just stumbled across your channel last night. I have a desire/dream to be an illustrator and your videos have been a great insight.
My favorite sketch book is the Hahnemuhle Nostalgie. The paper is smooth and a nice weight. Good for all types of media. I do recommend! Not sure if its available in the US.
I wait for new video's every day, you are an inspiration for me, thank you so much for doing videos, I love see you working, cause motivated me so muuuch 💖
Love u
Hola Fran, yo uso - canson artbook 180 a5 - te lo recomiendo, sin texturas, y los poros súper cerrados por ende no pasan los colores del otro lado incluso usando acrílicos.
Saludos!
I use the Canson sketchbook in I think is A5 and I have the best experience, the cover is hard and doesn't have spirals, but open really good, cause I really hate when you can open fully a sketchbook. I was very surprised, is not expensive and paper is very thin, but I use water color something and don't traspass the paper and the best is maybe that don't have texture. 🤭✨
Qué ilusión poder reconocer a algunas de las chicas del Workshop en tu moleskine Fran! Un abrazo desde Andalucía ❤
OMG SARAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO MEEEEEEEEE
Fran Meneses dont fight me Fran you neeeeddd itttt
Have you tried the Crescent Rendr sketchbook for copics/markers? It's my favorite sketchbook and it DOESNT BLEED or showthru! The best thing ever!!! I 😃😃😃
Yessss, such a nice video
I really like your videos, you are genuine and different. 💛
you should try the stillman and burn sketchbooks.
I am enjoying this video secretly as a sketchbook tour hahahaha
EDIT: she changed the name of the video aaaa now I'm not enjoying it so secretly anymore 😂
I love your cute art and adore you so much, Fran! So glad to hear you're moving to NY! Maybe I'll meet you in person one day in some convention or something. Haha. BTW, I'm Thai fan living in LA 😘😘😘
You should try Rendr paper for markers. It doesn't bleed through, so you paint with markers on both sides of the page.
^_^ Thanks!
You’re sketchbooks are so beautiful 😭
10:29 I think you mean embellished:) Hope this helps!
embroidered - sewn in detail
engraved - carved/cut/punched out detail
embellished - additional decorative detail
Lovely video thank you!! It s so inspiring!! But i still wonder how do u bring all your supplies all your markers n pens n all wherever u go?? 😬
Have you tried Seawhite of Brighton Travel journal? It's got hard cover and off-white pages - currently my favourite sketchbook! And much cheaper than Moleskine.
thanks Fran. I may visit the moleskine shop in Florence tomorrow, so hope it's not too pricey...
You should try the Illo sketchbook it’s very nice for markers!
