- The National performing a perfect set in Dingle for Other Voices in 2010 🖤
For the last 20 years Other Voices has been capturing musical performances in intimate spaces. The TV show and music festival which began in Dingle, Ireland has travelled to London, New York, Derry, Latitude Festival and Ireland's premier music festival, Electric Picnic.
Holy ... The National are without a doubt the best American band right now. And Bryan Devendorf is without a doubt one of the best drummers in the world! His ability to play complex rhythms with masterful ease and precision is extraordinary.
6 years later and it's still true.

This is the best song to listen to while traversing the tree lined country roads of Ohio. I drive through Sugarcreek recently that this song took me somewhere otherworldly.

Hard to believe just how much is going on in this song. Live performances really make the horns and guitar work shine.

some people saying here that the vocals are weak.. you should try singing a fucking E2 note in front of a loud band.. it's fucking impossible. E2 is the lowest note in the verses btw. E2 is the lowest string of the guitar when it's in standard tuning. It's pretty fucking impossible to sing it loudly haha

This is one of those songs that was 'meh' the first time I heard it and is now one of my favorite songs, from one of my favorite albums. funny how that happens, but sometimes the best songs take a little time to hit you.

Heard this at the Louisiana in Bristol last night, quality
I saw the brass in the background and wondered...huh? Then I remembered the LP mix that had some semblance of orchestral undertones to many of the songs on 'High Violet'. And I thought the horns worked very well-and a different ear for a familiar song is often amazing; like this is.
I hear you - all of a sudden one day it hit- major - now every day I get more fan girl. Love the new record.

Wanna know the truth? Matt is a terrible live singer. Yes, he is a baritone and that's good, but seriously, it's no excuse. His vocal is weak or at least sounds weak due to a lack of training. And yeah, that's why I never attend live shows, they dissapoint me.

Chris kennedy seriously, I love their records, it's one of my favorite bands ever, but Matt really is a poor singer. I could only listen to him really drunk, otherwise I'd be ruining their good image in my memory. Some other bands like Wilco, Calexico, Spiritualized are amazing live and sound very professional. I just can't not see the lack of professionalism in Matt.

I understand when some pop singers have a mannered voice, like Bowie. But Bowie is different from Matt. Bowie is actually able to "catch" the notes with precision and clarity while maintaining his "raw" and reticient manner. And when one isn't able to do that, it sounds nothing more than a drunk karaoke howler.
On the other hand, ignorance is bliss.
But the National are not just about Matt's voice - if he had a pitch perfect voice it would be ridiculous like Maroon 5 - they are one of the few bands left we can trust to deliver a great album and a live show - just brilliant music combined with great lyrics and a brilliant, interesting frontman. I don't get your point really. Music is truly on the wane and thank fuck these are here and having seen every major act bar Prince I would rate these in my top 10 ever.
