I came here after that video and the anecdote told by Ken Thompson on how Doug, who he called "the smartest of us all" could write a complete TMG compiler on a sheet of paper AND run the compilation in his head. That is insane. Much respect for Dr McIlroy.
The tenth-edition manual needs to be seen on paper to be truly appreciated. You will find that many entries fill exactly one page. Gre(1) is a thing of beauty.
