Does roots are from the Contera plant. It produces a kind of cluster yellow flowers called chupos. Locals usualLy suck the nectar of the flowers and it delicious! Also the people there use the leaves for culinary purposes. They do not eat it, they use it to wrap fresh homemade cheese and to make organic trays for breads. You will see this plant every where on the island. In a way, if not controlled, it can be invasive. However when they are in bloom, they are very beautiful.

Personal opinion upcoming, hopefully no one takes offence. My wife and I have been to both Madeira and Sao Miguel for holidays, and while both are nice destinations, we decided that Sao Miguel is just too dreary and isolated to stay for more than a week. Madeira is way more beautiful and temperate climate-wise in our opinion. But another thing : we know you are digital nomads, have you ever considered the island of Crete for a future destination stop ? Went there last June for two weeks, beautiful !! We stayed just outside Chania, in Kato Stalos. Another nice place is Heraklion Crete, which is the capital. I am sure both of you would love it there.

Way more beautiful? That's not even close to be true. São Miguel has 10 times more natural beauty than the big Madeira rock. You must be a fan of 10 floor hostels.

Also the Point of crete: there are more beautiful greek Islands than crete.
