This is the first time I’ve seen an albatross pick up food from the ground. I always thought that they couldn’t do it, but here parent and child both accomplished it. Good job! Like picking up slippery raw chicken bits with chopsticks. Their necessary feeding technique is unique. And tricky. Thanks Lady Hawk for piquing my interest and getting me scrolling for feeding videos 😊.
Hi Susan lol yes that is what it must be like - trying to pick up a small slippery bite with chopsticks!! It is pretty uncommon to see an albatross parent or chick pick up food dropped and eat it. I did see in Tiaki's season that LGL regurgitated a whole fish and it got stuck in her throat and she swallowed it back down. Then tried to regurgitate it again and it fell to the ground (it was alive and kicking!) and Tiaki grabbed it and swallowed it down! I’m glad our other royal albie baby got to get some good eats, that was savage ! Haha was a big tentacle he grabbed and ate like it was nothing 😂 so funny 😁. @@ladyhawk oh I meant that he picked it up in 3 seconds (because as kids people used to say “5 second rule!” Any time someone dropped food on the ground, meaning that it takes 3 seconds for the germs to get to the food so you better pick it up quickly. lol I never followed that though, i have no idea if the germ thing is true but regardless of whether it takes 5 seconds, it takes basically an instant for dirt and stuff to get on the food, but I was saying the albies must have a 3 second rule because they never pick the food up, however TFT picked it up quickly, only 3 seconds- so maybe that was acceptable to an albie 😆. Hello dear EmiW yes that was a really perfect landing by WYL!! It is not very common to see albatross pick up food dropped on the ground and eat it. TFT certainly was lucky it was such a big piece - it was easier for him to grab it with his bill and then down the hatch. In the video after TFT ate it, there was a small piece that WYL was trying to eat and he just could not eat it in his bill to eat. (09:47) It is too difficult. Hello Vivian no the albie chicks do not learn to self feed before they fledge. They are always fed by the parent till they day they take off. And once they fledge they do not return back to land for over 5-7 years! So once they leave, instinctively they learn to catch their food. This is an example of what TFT will do upon seeing squid fish or octopus in the water - diving to grab it and eat it whole!

If the adult catches a live whole octopus, how does the tentacle become detached, ? Im wondering ...... does it die while in the gullet? I feel for the octopus , nature is harsh for sure
Hi hellok that is an interesting question and I do not know. Maybe he only got this tentacle? Albatross do fight in the ocean and grab at prey - could have been torn off during that. But to regurgitate a whole octopus would be something else! The octopus does eventually die in the gullet of the albatross.

I enjoyed watching and I also threw up in my mouth a little when that “baby” snarffed up that tentacle and swallowed it whole. 🤢🤮 It was a bit “boring” as there was no narration to listen to. Might I suggest you gather some basic information about the species for those of us who may not be familiar it’s these amazing birds! Sea birds are my favorite. Great job, my friend.
