    Borussia Dortmund are having a strange season. In a year where they looked weaker domestically than the last season, they have managed to make the Champions League final. It wasn’t all a fluke either, as they had to go through the likes of Atletico Madrid and PSG - not to mention their group wasn’t easy either. But in the Bundesliga, they are completely deserving of their 5th placed finish, as they have had difficulty beating the teams above them, and drop points too often against teams lower in the table.
    It’s hard to make a clear judgement on Edin Terzic’s time at Dortmund: fumbling the league last season, begin to struggle in the league in the next season, but make a Champions League final?

    Huge Dortmund fan here since 2009. Year in year out we, as a true BVB fan are immune to disappointments. It’s been a ritual but we stayed strong and stayed loyal to the club. Tears of pain and disappointments have always been part of supporting this beautiful club. I’ve cried on ucl final lost 2013, 2021 dfb pokal win and the bottle up last season against Mainz. It’s never easy supporting Dortmund. And rn we are in the ucl final. Being in the semis was alrdy a huge achievement and gg into final is almost surreal. One last dance for Marco. Only kind of, yes he won the DFB Pokal, but that was because of prime sancho and haaland. They literally carried. Was really happy to see Reus win a trophy. And the UCL run is very impressive but again, it's our players who have been scrapping in the UCL. Whenever our backs have been against the wall, Bundesliga 22-23 season before November, after the 1st 2 games of CL group stages etc., the team has suddenly started playing well. I think Terzic really needs the players to have extreme work rate every game. But he can't seem to get them on his side unless there is a do or die situation. But as a tactician he is literally shit. There is no two ways about it. Tactics are supposed make the team work smarter not harder, without them the team runs like headless chickens but can't get any results. I think terzic can be a good assistant coach who motivates players but we need a better tactician

    We've seen plenty of examples of this. Chelsea in 2012 and 2021, Tottenham in 2019 and now Drortmund here. A common theme with those teams was that despite whatever they did in the CL, they didn't address the issues present the season long and then those ran into the following season and they had very poor domestic seasons and no CL success to compensate. Of course if a manager wins the CL, can't really sack them, but it is a double-edged sword. Having said that, waiting to see the outcome of a final before deciding whether you stick with a manager or sack them is not the way. You should look at the season and see if progress has been made and whether you feel confident with that guy going forward.

Just lacked squad depth. But from this position they bought no players for two transfer windows in a row, Walker left and crucially they lost Dembele too. Rose, Alli, Vertongen, Alderweireld were all declining, and they bought in minimal reinforcements. Spurs were in trouble by the time the CL final :( But long term it might've been for the best because they've now built their stadium

    Imo, Dortmund has failed because of the following:
    1) Terzic lacks tactical identity. In the last 2 seasons, we have played a 3 back, tried target men as strikers, and also inverted wingers as strikers. There have been times we have tried to play possession football and also times where we have played counter-attacking football.
    2) Terzic cannot develop young players. Under his tenure, he has been a primary cause for halting moukoko's development. He bought Fullkrug this summer which made moukoko a 3rd choice striker. Moukoko, even with such sporadic minutes has a goal every 100 min in the Bundesliga, I believe. Bynoe gittens has great dribbling ability, especially for somebody so tall. Good finsihing too. But those areas haven't seen much improvment, under Terzic. Karim Adeyemi, right now is playing well but is extremely inconsistent. Yes, he has attitude problems but as a manager you need to handle those things. Gio Reyna, he was very injury prone but in great form when he came on as a sub. Terzic was far too slow to make him a starter and now he left.
    3) Poor recruitment. In the last few years Dortmund has lost a bit of it's philosophy. We now sign mid-table players to try and superglue a wound. Nmecha is exhibit A. Far too expensive for a player who wasn't seen as having outstanding potential. Exhibit B, Fulkrug, far too hasty of a signing, could have done with Moukoko. Exhibit C, Ozcan, not a bad backup for Can, but Can is not a good player. We needed to replace him with an actual DM.
    4) Fallout of Terzic with the experienced players. It's been reported that there have been tensions between Reus and Terzic, Sule and Terzic, and Hummels and Terzic.
    These are just some of the things I have observed as a Dortmund Fan, but this was also present in the brief Rose era, and in the Faivre era too

    If we recalled back to the European Cup periods, the worst teams winning the Champions League is nothing new. In 1975, Bayern Munich and Leeds United had a tumultuous season in their respective domestic football, only finishing mid-table (10th and 9th, respectively). In 1982, Aston Villa won the European Cup, despite finishing 11th in English 1st Division, at that time. Even Real Madrid did this multiple times; when the club won Champions League back in 2000, they were 5th in La Liga.
    Also, even though it's not related to the Champions League, inter Milan winning the UEFA Cup in 1993/94 was also a great achievement, considering their disappointing domestic campaign. They finished 13th in Serie A, but at that time, the league still has 18 teams, and Inter Milan only narrowly avoided a relegation by only 1 point ahead of Piacenza.

      After the arrival of Ronaldo in 2002, they only managed to win La Liga once again. Their performance at the UCL was so poor that they were not being handled as potential title contesters for quite some time.
      Florentino Pérez second time at Real was a lot more successful!
      I grew up as a kid with Real winning the UCL in 98, 00 and 02. After a decades long drought! With their last title in 66.

    I really dislike statements like this. It's not a miracle. It's professional sport. It's football. It's that simple.
    I've read many biographies from team sports like football and individual sports like tennis, one thing for sure is you can never count anything out.
    Dortmund going to the Champions League final did not surprise me (particularly once I saw that half of the draw). I've watched too many matches and football competitions to be surprised nowadays from epic comebacks, to Porto & Greece in 2004 European competitions, Montpellier in 2012 and Leicester City winning the premier league. Wigan won the FA Cup against Man City and then got relegated the same season. Sevilla won the Europa League last season having had a league season to forget. These things happen many times.
    And about inconsistency. I hear people say this a lot. But it's very simple. Most teams are inconsistent. Only a handful of teams in the league are really consistent, hence they're at the top. Is any team in any league outside top 2 or 3 really consistent? It's impossible for majority of the teams to be very consistent because of the league format.
    There is a different feeling between the Champions league and league for Dortmund. In the majority of games in the league they're favourites to win. In the majority of the games in the Champions league they're not favourites. Plus, the Champions league is not a guarantee every season. It's a spectacle. The elite competition. So you're more likely to always be up for it then not. A dream for many players and teams. Sport is about the performance on the night. Regardless of form, you can win on any given matchday. Dortmund has managed to do it... consistently this season. I wish Dortmund well in the final.

  • @Circial
    @Circial 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    First off about the Mainz Game. Looking at the xP table, Mainz is actually 6th or 7th in it and is particularly good at home. Looking at the Bundesliga table tells you its an easy match but it really isn't. The actual problem isn't their points per game against the weaker teams. The issue is that they got 5 out of 24 points against the other champions league sides. Espeically against Leipzig and Stuttgart, where they are not the underdogs, Dortmund had a hard time. It might be related to pressure.
    That said, the biggest issue the club is facing is financial in nature. Both their top wage earners aren't even regular starters for them. In general, the wage structure is awful. There's so many average players on 5-7 million € a year. Then there's the issue with the club not having money for transfers even tho the wage to earnings ratio is about 60%. Then there is the clubs refusal to spend over 30 million on players that could progress the club. As a result, players have to develop or they are simply not good enough for the clubs ambitions (winning the bundesliga & regular progresion to the Champions league business end).

      @felixwinkler6450 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Great addition.
      I'd also like to point out that the season isn't really that awful. If they win the last game at home against the dead-last team of Darmstadt they'll end up with 63 points, only eight points fewer than last season, in which they had a certain potential Ballon d'Or winning english player worth more than a hundred million in their squad. There have been seasons in which a team could win the title with that amount of points and only once did it lead to a fifth place since the three-point-rule was implemented. In a normal season they would have likely finished in second or at least third place, not that terrible at all.
      It's just that they are sharing a league with one of the best teams of all time, Bayer Leverkusen, plus one of the biggest clubs in all of sports, Bayern Munich, which payed hundreds of millions in transfers before the season - including a certain potential Ballon d'Or winning english player worth more than a hundred million - and reached the semi-final of the Champions League. Also a Stuttgart with a freak season and Leipzig, which almost beat Real Madrid, if it wasn't for questionable decisions by the referees.
      In other words: The Bundesliga might be the best league in the world this season and Dortmund only struggled against the absolute beasts within this monster league. Maybe Dortmund isn't that bad, maybe it's just that the rest of the league is really, really good.
      At least I think the quality of the Bundesliga is a good signal to what's to come for the German national team this summer. But maybe I'm just too much of an optimist.

      @@felixwinkler6450this just means that BvB has to seriously up their game to still be competitive. If Leverkusen and Stuttgart somehow continue this form into next season, its gonna be bad news for bvb

    • @felixwinkler6450
      @felixwinkler6450 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@applepeel1662 Well, it actually kind of means the opposite.
      Leverkusen will lose some of their players, not again score almost twenty times after the 90th minute and have way fewer points next season. Stuttgart will not have another record setting season (best season in club history, a points total that would have gotten them the title in 90% of all previous seasons since the 3-point-rule was implemented) and Leipzig was only barely better. If Dortmund repeats the season next year, in all likelyhood they will finish higher just because the other teams will not repeat a crazy season like this.
      But yes, of course being better would be... better.
      They've already worked on some problems, they will likely not repeat their Champions League run and will be able to focus on the Bundesliga and the squad will mostly be the same plus hopefully some recruits and a few talented players stepping up.
      I'd predict them gaining a few points and the competition losing out by comparison next season. Bayern will get roughly 80 points, Leverkusen will similarly, but behind those two Dortmund will likely finish in third. The year after that Alonso will be gone and Dortmund will be back on second place - without having to risk too much by buying players they can't afford.
      In other words: Of the five big teams this season, only Bayern and Dortmund will look better next year. So, there is no need to panic and create self-inflicted damage through high-risk actions. They just need to stay on course. And they will.

      Actually, it's not happening once for both clubs. Liverpool had almost achieved this in 2018, despite only barely finishing 4th in Premier League, but they lost because of the infamous Salah's injury and Karius' mistake.
      Chelsea in 2021 also won, having so close to miss out the Champions League qualification through Premier League's finishes.

    I am a fan and member of Dortmund for over 25 years now and although I fully appreciate the CL run and how close we got to be champions last year, I feel Terzic has to go. I don't have the feeling he has a bigger idea where to lead the club, how to develop the football we play and is more a hindrance to the work of others in the club, e.g. Kehl. It seems he thinks from game to game and that is why we cannot get any consistency. It feels all to much like the small time with Doll or Stöger, but it is just not ending...

    If they can win against Real they’ll have similar story of Liverpool’s miracle in Istanbul in 2005 as at that time they are also finished 5th in the league and they won against the formidable Ancelotti’s AC Milan. However to win against Ancelotti’s Madrid will needs a higher power intervention but of course anything is possible.

    Dortmund fan here. This is gonna sound illogical but hear me out.
    We are currently in the best position we can be to pull off a miracle in beating a historic juggernaut like Real Madrid. Not saying that our chances are high but it’ll be higher than if we had a more consistent season which results in us sitting in a top 3 position. Our weird season will be the key. Real Madrid are known for taking out already strong teams, especially with its prestige in the UCL .
    The extreme inconsistency is gonna give us the extra sprinkle to beat Real Madrid. The UCL final is a high stakes, high risk, high reward situation. If we were consistent there wouldn’t be much “wiggle room” for it to pull off miracles aka much lower chance of Terzic black magic. I’d much rather us adopt a high risk extreme attacking approach and risk losing 4-1 than us being conservative and losing 1-0. We’ve already exceeded all expectations and there is no shame in losing to Real Madrid. We also ironically get more money if Real Madrid wins so we literally have nothing to lose. The pressure to succeed will 150% be on them, we have absolutely nothing to lose.

    As a BVB fan who doesn't want Terzic long term. It makes more sense to keep him for at least a year. This will be Lars Rickens first summer as the head honcho with Watzke stepping down. I would rather keep some stability in the club until Lars gets used to the new job. I think as much as I think Terzic needs to go to a 2nd league team or a smaller 1st league team with less pressure to gain more experience and his own tactical style and then return to BVB. We need to think long term and give Lars the time to decide what he thinks is best for the future without worrying about a new manager getting used to the club short term.
