- It’s gonna be Mei! 🐼 Watch the brand-new trailer for Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red, coming March 2022.
Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter-an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! Directed by Academy Award® winner Domee Shi (Pixar short “Bao”) and produced by Lindsey Collins, Turning Red releases on March 11, 2022.

But the actual lyrics are "It's gonna be me."
It’s gonna be Mei, as in her name.

I’m an Indian man, but so much of this movie resonated with me. My parents raised me in a very similar manner: be obedient and only focus on school. Athletics and dating were not allowed. I was in shock that a Pixar movie could be so relatable.

Finally, a movie where the nerdy kids don't spend the entire movie trying to become cool/popular. Seriously, I’m honestly digging this group dynamic: how fresh is it to see the nerdy kids who are comfortable being themselves??
Reminds me of Mabel Pines, Candy, and Grenda from Gravity Falls. They are comfortable geeking out in their own little group and are crazy for boy bands. The NSYNC song in this trailer gives that same vibe. Pure fun!
Not realistic at all lol
@@temjinAMG Neither is a teenage girl turning into a giant red panda, but that's the cool thing about animation: not everything has to be "realistic", especially in a kids movie

I'm loving how Mei's friends aren't kept in the dark about her secret and are actually supportive of her. Especially since, of course kids would love it if their friend could turn into a giant fluffy red panda.

What I love most is she throws her hands up when she's startled. Which is a real thing red pandas do to make themselves look bigger
Except they clearly know they look cute when doing it because they do it for zookeepers too to get treats.
And she IS bigger
@@mnomadvfx Plot twist, they hate the treats, every time they throw up their hands they are actually begging the zookeeper to leave them alone but the zookeepers are evil and give them treats anyway, but it's so incredibly sadistic that we think it's much more likely the red pandas are just being cute and the zookeepers are being nice.

Me too!
I’m just imagining this is in the same universe.
No
Dude every single pixar movie is a cartoon though?
I hate it
Okay so I’m surprised that they didn’t follow the typical formula of hiding the secret “powers” from friends and family as well as being embarrassed of her new form. Her embracing her special self feels refreshing. It all seems to be a metaphor about growing up into a teenager and I like the positive spin on it. Oh also her being an overachiever and not embarrassed or mocked for it.
Yeah pretty convinced it's a movie-worthy spin on puberty. The "armpit sniffing" kinda gave it away. She might just be a little young, hence why her friends and family were so surprised yet supportive.
Yep, pretty obviously, "Turning Red" is about periods and puberty. Just personified as turning into a red panda. This movie is gonna be amazing for subconsciously teaching young girls how to handle growing up, and all the little 'surprises' that come with it.
To me it just seems like it's just pushing away from one old trope for the new modern trope, this just screams your basic rebel formula, just from this one trailer it's easy to see where it's heading, I mean the main character said it themselves."I've always been perfect little MeiMei(sorry if I misspelled it)" her emotional state will be the key, and I'd put money on that during the whole movie her parents will attempt to show her the old cultured way to suppress or control her "panda form" and she'll reject saying that it's outdated or something to that effect, ultimately she'll be in the right somehow and her parents will be like "we should have listen to you" or something, this movie and that new Hispanic one just screams culture pandering to me, it feels forced, hopefully I'm wrong and we get another hit like "Coco" but looking at disneys record so far as of 2020 I'm not convinced, Disney doesn't innovate any more, they just follow the trends
@@lostknight771 just wanted to tell u its pixar not disney bestie :))
@@lostknight771 ofc it's not gonna be a revolutionary movie, but with a positive, wholesome movie about embracing change and being yourself I'll be just fine :) I can't say I'm excited for "Encanto" tho, since it looks pretty bland both in story and especially in character design.

Fun Fact: Red Pandas are not pandas and are not related to bears. They are more closely related to raccoons and weasels. Another name for them is Fire Fox.
For some reason when I was little I always thought red pandas were just red raccoons
Actually not even that! They seem like it but they're literally it's own little thing, they haven't actually been able to get traced back to any other kind of animal family. I dunno it's kind of fastinating :)
Quick, someone tell Mozilla Firefox to change their logo.
@@kvalentine3283 they already know this fact, they named it after the red panda, and had a live feed of a Red Panda exhibit on the main page when you’d start up the browser
Yeah, the only reason they have the name 'panda' at all is because 'panda' roughly translates to 'eater of bamboo', and the red panda and panda bear both subsist mostly on bamboo.
Mei's mom was once a teenager too, she went through the same struggle. Although I understand Mei's viewpoint but somehow I empathize with her mother more. Some people make it seem like their mom is the villain who needs to be defeated instead of healed. Our parents are humans too, with their own strengths and flaws.

The fact that there is a character in this movie called Priya who acts totally different to the one I knew gives me a new appreciation for the name, as I often associate names with people I know have those names along with their behaviour, good or bad. Yes, Mei's first transformation is because she remembered how they hit the twin towers.
@@salamonthegreat Some dumbass complained about that and it became a running joke, this commentator is probably referring to it
@@salamonthegreat imagine making a film set in the 2000s and not addressing the biggest event to shape the decade smh
@@salamonthegreat 🤓
I forgot the name of the movie so I typed "red panda movie" and it actually works!
I genuinely like that they gave Mei a really solid support system so she isn't trying to hide it from EVERYONE. And I just love their relationship so far and really hope that they bounce off each other naturally in the full movie.
It's gonna be Mei!

This movie looks so charming! I don't think I'll ever get tired of animation
what’s fun is that animation will only get better and better
Me neither!😊
Cause with Animation, anything can happen. With the artstyle, you can be as creative as you want.
Agreed♥️♥️

One of the best movies in the year. And the music is also nice
Nope it’s not
God I’m just watching this when this film is set in Canada and there’s a fire there all the way from NJ to lots of places
I honestly like how the black/brown girl here is the emo calm character. I feel like it's rare for characters like her to be given such a unique personality, they're either bubbly or sassy.
No, actually it’s a new sterotype. Same trope in Dear Evan Hansen, and basically all new cartoons
THIS
And she’s a furry
@@Dr.LongMonkey I haven't seen any other chatacters with this trope, can you give examples?
@@Dr.LongMonkey if you are referring to Alana, I wouldn’t consider her the emo calm character at all. If anything, she fits more into the bubbly personality that commenter mentioned. She just has a deep backstory.
This movie looks like loads of fun. Love the more "cartoony" style. Can't wait to see it.
But its the exact same style as adventure time, gravity falls, steven universe, star, bare bears, etc. It's the same bland & cliche style.
@@MisterHeroman When I say "cartoony" I'm comparing it to movies like Raya, Frozen and even the new Lightyear - where the characters have more "realistic" body proportions and textures. The scenes and props are also a lot more "cartoony".
Compared to the movies I just mentioned I reckon (making an assumption based only on the trailer) that this is going to be a bit more light-hearted and fun.
It somehow gives me Ghibli vibes...or some kind of anime... something in the style or facial expressions maybe
@@Newfiecat It's nowhere near anime, of any kind of style.

Pixar didn't want to show some kid getting his head crushed
The little Korean girl (Abby? forgot her name) is the best part of this movie. xD hahaha so funny. Whoever came up with her idea and character deserves a raise. Overall, the animation style is so good and it almost feels like it was animated at 60fps :D
I love how supportive Mei's friends are❤❤❤❤
It's interesting that she starts off with black hair, but when first turning into a red panda she becomes a redhead.
This movie looks so adorable and fun !
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. 😅

I dont know how, but it seems animated movies always have a great story and a super relatable social issue, that hurt us as humans all over the world. Beside the most cute on screen animated red panda, that i would love to keep seeing for a 3 hours movie, the underlying theme about finding the true us, ia truly touching. One of the great animated movies made recently.
