  • This video shows an aerial tour of downtown Phoenix; Arizona's capital city. The size and impressiveness of downtown Phoenix may not compare well with other large cities out west like Dallas, Denver or San Diego. The population of Phoenix is spread out evenly across a large area which means a low percentage actually live in the downtown area. The biggest reason the skyscrapers in downtown Phoenix are not taller is due to its proximity to Sky Harbor Airport with east/west runways which bring airline flight paths directly over the downtown area. The FAA has denied multiple proposals for taller skyscrapers in the downtown Phoenix area for this reason.
    With a population of over 1.7 million people (as of 2020), Phoenix is the most populous state capital in the United States. It's the fifth most populous city nationwide, and the most populous city of the state of Arizona. The Metropolitan Phoenix area (including the suburb cities of Mesa, Chandler, Glendale, Scottsdale, and Tempe) has a population of nearly 4.9 million and covers 2,000 square miles. Consistently outpacing U.S. population growth over the last 25 years, the area is projected to grow by nearly 60 percent in the next decade or so.
    Averaging over 100 days per year of 100°F or above temperatures (late May-early September), Phoenix is clearly very hot in the Summer. According to the National Climatic Data Center, Phoenix is sunnier than any other major metropolitan area in the US, with an average of 334 days of sunshine a year. In the winter months, temperatures hover around 67 degrees and rarely dip below freezing. And, you can ditch your umbrella-it only rains about eight inches annually. Due to the pleasant winter climate, Phoenix is an extremely popular winter home for over 400,000 retirees aka "snowbirds" between the months of October to May.
    The greater Phoenix area offers many options for recreation and entertainment. Phoenix has become one of the top golf destinations in the world, thanks to its almost 200 golf courses. Besides golf, there are many other outdoor activities to enjoy like hiking, biking, and horseback riding (when it’s not too hot).
    Phoenix has it all for the sports fan! With franchises in all four major professional sports leagues: Phoenix Suns (NBA), Arizona Diamondbacks (MLB), Arizona Cardinals (NFL) and Arizona Coyotes (NHL). NASCAR fans won’t be disappointed since ISM Raceway hosts two NASCAR events each racing season. Baseball might be what the Phoenix area is best known for though. Half of the Major League Baseball teams (15 total in the Cactus League) come to Phoenix for Spring Training, including the Cubs, White Sox, Angels, Royals, Dodgers, Brewers, Reds, A’s, Padres, Giants, Rockies, Rangers, Mariners, Indians and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Cactus League attracts an average of approximately 1.5 million attendees generating about $350 million yearly.

    No tall buildings in Phoenix

    • @novemberSUN1
      @novemberSUN1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For Phoenix, why build up when you can build out? More land to develop so no need for skyscrapers...
      Downtown is close to an airport so there’s a height limit

      @@novemberSUN1 Downtown is not in the flight path so that doesn't mean shit. Real reason: they don't want the buildings to overshadow the mountains.

      Yeah we have a stumpy skyline. You can blame the FAA, cheap land, and NIMBYs for that.

    Downtown Phoenix could use some serious development especially beyond Jefferson. Downtown Phoenix ends on Buckeye road at least a mile from the warehouse district.

      Lots of development is happening in downtown and Roosevelt Row just to the north with a new tallest building about to go up.

      @@michael85225 Well I meant they should build South of Jefferson. There have been development from McDowell to Washington for quite some time now. I'm actually impressed with the development on Washington. Its starting to look like time square in New York with the "Jumbotrons".

    Take the top 10 largest cites in the country and Phoenix is #1 for the worst downtown. No action, bums and homeless everywhere. Once in awhile after a sporting event a few bars might be hopping, but other than that, it’s dullsville. All the action is in Scottsdale. I’ve lived here for over 40 years and have seen so many attempts to revitalize downtown, but all have failed. The warehouse district came close to happening, but died after 5 years.
