  • Since 1880 the 13 km long branch line from Liestal to Waldenburg in Baselland has been the only Swiss passenger railway with 750 mm gauge. In early April 2021 the line will close until December 2022 for modernization and regauging to 1000 mm.
    The rural route travels through a hilly valley and connects several small towns with the cantonal capital Liestal, which is located on the Olten- Basel main line. This footage from mid March 2021 shows the vintage 1980s high-floor trains in action during the last month of revenue service on 750 mm gauge. These images therefore are also intended as a historic record. The electric trains will continue their career in Slovakia on the Čierny Balog narrow gauge railway.

    Die liebevoll als "Waldenburgerli" bezeichnete Schmalspurbahn in Kanton Baselland war von 1880 bis 2021 der einzig für Personenverkehr konzessionierte Verkehrsbetrieb in der Schweiz. Von Frühjahr 2021 bis Ende 2022 wird die Bahn auf Meterspur umgebaut und modernisiert. Diese Filmaufnahmen vom März 2021 zeigen die eckigen Schmalspurzüge der 1980er und frühen 90er Jahre nochmals im Regelbetrieb zwischen Liestal und Bad Bubendorf auf dem unteren Streckenteil der Stichstrecke.

      Hi Henry, many thanks. Yes I tried to catch the old 750 mm trains on the Waldenburg branch line, while they were still going. It's all history now, but of course the units can be experienced at their new home in Slovakia. Cheers.

    Klasse das diese eckigen Schmalspurzüge. Wird es nach dem Umbau komplett modernisierte Triebwagen geben?

      Ja es wird neue Stadler Triebwagen geben vom Typ "Tramlink". Also Stadtbahnen mit Ueberlandcharakter, diese gibt es auch auf dem Chemnitzer Netz.

      Yes, the only constant is change. At least the attractive rural quality of this branch line will remain, also once the new Stadler trains are in service and once the gauge is wider. Thanks for watching :)

    A unique part of what made Swiss rural railways so interesting will be lost and probably replaced by Stadler units that now run on many of the independent railways of Switzerland. I’m sure the new trains will be a huge improvement on the old trains but I am sorry to see the change.

      Yes, the Waldenburg branch line will use many of its unique features once the 750 mm gauge is replaced. It will become much more conventional and standardized and those of course are the objectives of the investment. The nice scenery and rural flavor will remain, even once the new Stadler Tramlink tram-trains are in service.
