Because when the gold is pressed into a stamp or melted into the graphite molds for when it's melted in are really smooth so the gold is in return to smooth so it's easily be able to reflect when it's stamped it it's even more smooth
Because the mold are really smooth in return the gold is smooth you can try this yourself with any metal particularly with low melting point metals and less of you have a foundry which I doubt meltdown the metal let it cool down and harden and it should be pretty shiny then if you do it on something like a pile of sand then wash the sand off it would be less shiny
The base metals are nickel copper steel silver they make the gold stronger because gold naturally is really if you somehow get 24 karat gold you can hammer it with a hammer and it will flatten out but if you get 8 karat gold which has a lot of base metals in it makes it stronger kind of like carbon and iron a certain amount of carbon and iron makes it either wrought iron or cast iron and writing between is steel
