    My entire IT career (15+ years) has been consulting (going to multitudes of small businesses). I've even doing it on my own now and I'd say that you don't have to know everything. You have to know enough and you need to be good at doing research and remember that a lot of companies provide free technical support on their products if you can't figure it out.
    Also, if you have the right mind, skills and experience to do it, don't worry about undercutting the other people that are trying to do it. I find pretty much everyone you're competing against barely knows what they're doing. You can easily command over $100 per hour. You need to bill enough to keep your business open. Any less is a waste of your time.

      I have about the same experience as yourself, I agree with you, you don't need to know everything, just need to know where to find the answers. I am looking to venture out on my own as well. Primary clients would be small businesses. How did you get leads, contacts, just go to each business? Did you work full time while doing this?

    • @matthewbartke4424
      @matthewbartke4424 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Greg Franklin I worked for a consulting firm that already had leads and contacts. I did my own thing for a short time and just did manual mailings and talked to people I knew and they would recommend clients to me.
      The few people I know who have consulting firms with a good number of people began with one great client that was pretty big and was the source of most of their regular clients via recommendations.

    He speaks the truth! I have worked in residential, businesses and as I.T. for companies. There is always something to learn.
    I have my degree and still have to google problems. One person may have something so simple, you wonder why they even called you. Then the next customer takes you forever to figure out. Then one place will want to replace any computer with even the smallest issue, while the next wants you to fix the dinosaur with windows 95.

    Good thing I know everything! LMAO! Seriously I've been in the military since 2002, and I started out making cat5 cables to now doing red team projects. I've begun my own business and it is challenging, but it's not overly hard like the video states I say this from my experience level. Me starting a business in my early years yes it would have been challenging, but if it's your dream DO IT ! you only live once!

    As someone that has been in the business for as long as this TH-camr has been alive, he should know....yes, it is VERY, VERY hard to start your own business, it doesn't matter what the field is. But as someone who has sat in 100's if not over a 1000 meetings with IT professionals, you NEVER make a negative comment without a solution.
    So Mister I.T. Career Questions, what was the purpose of the video? Four years and you haven't even responded to your comments?

    Very realistic opinion! I 've worked on IT business and the customers expected from us to know everything! You also have to compete with all these people that does IT as a part time job with low fees. Also, now that everything goes to the cloud, even fewer IT jobs are needed.

    I have 21 years experience supporting Microsoft Networks of various size and complexity. I can relate to what he's saying here. I've gone behind other companies that didn't know what they were doing and in some cases left the customer completely down and worse off than when they found them. I've found servers partially disassembled when all they need to do to get them up and running was to press F2 on the keyboard. He's right you can do serious damage and risk being liable for damages.

    I think part of the issue that I have with this video is that it's right and wrong. Yes, you should know various aspects of IT but no one knows everything. Nor will you ever know everything. In fact, I work with various specialist all the time. Then there is the fact that you can be selective in the types of technology that you support. For instance, I can choose to provide and support AWS instead of Windows Server. These are details you can hash out with the business. In IT there are various schools of thought, and for some of us in the field, there is the belief that you need "all" the information before you can make a decision. Then there's the people who have networks of people and when a specific specialty is needed, we hire them for that one service. You have more control than this video admits when starting an IT company. Again, you can choose which types of tech you support, the size of the companies/people you support and how you support them. Like the old saying goes, "whether you think you can or you think you cannot, you are correct." Good luck.

    If you can figure out how to run a business, any business, then hire or find a good IT guy and partner up. I'm a plumber and .my biggest road block was learning how to correctly run a business. The best way to do that is to work for someone who owns a successful IT business and take notes

    He's actually right. I had mine for over 10 years. You need to build a team, hire smarter guys than you, or you will be the main clog in your whole operation working after hours and on weekends, spending less time with family. Unless you make it into a passive income business. Anyone can succeed, anywhere, they just can't give up. Gotta Keep going even when times get tough or down.

    Wrong, do a little bit of pc and laptop trouble shooting, know how to fix and install printers, know how to fix outlook/ office 365, BIGGIE: know how to use Excel. Basics like knowing the newest OS or legacy systems like windows 7 is key...knowing how to reset passwords and set up active directory.
    It all depends on who your clie t base will be. Know how to run a business (expenses, income, debits amd credits, budgets, and inventory) start small. Work your way up. Good luck

    You should have specified a little more between Computer Repair and IT Consulting as they are different from the other and also the title says "Computer Repair Business". Computer Repair is a great start for those new into the IT field. IT Consulting, like you said, is not too easy as a decent amount of experience/knowledge in managing and troubleshooting multiple facades of IT unlike Computer Repair, especially when your clients are no longer residential.

    This video seems a little repetitive and negative. If anybody wishes to start any type of business always prepare. Start with a plan listing out all the facts, use a decent business plan template and utilize it for progression. This chap seems to have spent 3 plus minutes negating rather than offering solutions. So for anybody wanting to try IT or otherwise, give it a go using a business plan, set out a minimal amount to start, and build up a good reputation. With excellent communication skills and effective solutions, people will always be grateful. Obviously, there are going to be the minority that will not be satisfied but always keep communication professional and courteous! Good luck to anyone willing to try!

  • @mrorange159
    @mrorange159 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Having ran an IT business for over 3 & 1/2 years I can say that it is extremely difficult even if you are only focusing on residential clients to make a living like I am. I have pulled it off but I wouldn't suggest anyone else bother trying this path. It's hard work even with residential.
    You will get constant phone calls from previous clients asking for you to come back and "touch up" some problem they've invented after the fact and you are obliged to go back their for free to maintain your reputation. You're constantly comparing your hourly rate to the price of a clients computer and a lot of time are recommending new systems to customers which doesn't make you particularly popular even if it is the logical thing for them to do. The computer repair industry is dying anyway, computers are becoming disposable, cloud solutions are coming in and Chromebooks and the like are eventually going to be the norm. Who will need a computer tech when they can buy a $150 top of the line Chromebook in 5 years from now and all their data/applications/life are stored on the cloud? I won't have a job in 5 years unless I do what this guy says and "learn everything" to get in to the commercial world which I don't have the energy to do as I'm completely burnt out after 15 years in the industry. Take this guys advice. Don't go in to a computer repair business. In fact steer clear of IT help-desk, IT computer repair jobs.. It's all going to make you money but none of it has any future unless you put in the real hard yards to get a decent high paying system admin/programmer/web dev job etc.

    • @mrorange159
      @mrorange159 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Further to this, my advice would be if you are young, go get certified, get a degree, focus on a specific area and win at it, once you've mastered it, you're passionate about it and you have a lot of experience in it, go run a business doing that.

    • @mn1083
      @mn1083 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Now that it's been 5 years, do you still think your point stands or has your opinion changed?

    • @mrorange159
      @mrorange159 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @mn1083 I just re-read what I wrote then, and no, my opinion hasn't changed much. I pretty much agree with everything I said then. I think perhaps I over-estimated the take over of cloud computing and chrome books at the time but other than that, I still believe that you are far better off learning more complex and sought after skills such as software development or sys admin/networking skills rather than trying to run around town fixing random computer problems, honestly it’s a waste of time. So you might be interested to know about a year ago I actually chucked in my business and managed to get a job for a power company as a support specialist on 100k a year, this was a fantastic move for my career and filled me with a lot more confidence as I was finally really proving myself since the role involved managing AD accounts, Exchange accounts, Service Now and a bunch of other complex systems, however I actually was so burnt out by that point that I resigned only a few months later even though they extended my contract a year and gave me a pay rise due to my hard work ethic. So, since then I took some savings (not much, but even a short contract on $100k can help you save a bit) and I was lucky enough to get a small inheritance from my grandfather who sadly passed away and I've been studying game development since through college. Finally, I am doing something I love, and I hope to eventually get a job in the industry. Wish me luck. Hopefully, I'm not back on here in 3 years telling you I’m living out of a gutter!
      But to anyone reading this, I'd probably suggest against computer technician work because frankly it is frustrating, poorly paid and boring. It can also be quite disgusting at times depending on the homes you are visiting and the hygiene of your clients, at times you almost feel dirty like a prostitute due to the fact you are digging around in disgusting computers that haven’t been cleaned in 10 years and are sitting on seats which elderly people have urinated in due to being incontinent (bring a fold up chair and put it in the back of your car, I’m not joking, this happened to me numerous times where I was forced to rush home, change and shower). That being said, the only reason I got that 100k a year job was because my resume said I ran a business for 5 years. So, perhaps it was worth it in the end. Also, my advice (if you choose to go ahead with running an IT business) would be that you should start by charging a moderate amount of money, not a low amount of money, don't go charging $20 or $40 (AUD) for your call outs, it's not enough to keep you sane, charge at least $70-80 a call out, that is probably the fairest starting point even if you are new, and if you are new it'll definitely help you to have worked in this job for a company first before transitioning to a business. Once you've built up a client base of at least around 100 people then think about pushing up your rate to around $100 and don't push it much higher than that. In my experience, the more you charge the less work you will get but the higher quality clients you will receive and you will end up doing less work for the same amount of money overall. If you don't want to be spending your time in disgusting, filthy homes on your hands and knees covered in someone elses dust and filth then charge more honestly. If you charge more you will likely end up driving in to large homes with clean floors and dealing with decent well spoken individuals who actually will pay you at the end of the service and won't bicker over some trivial issue. So, charge a moderate to high amount, but don't push it because you will be beaten by your competition. My second piece of advice is to learn everything you can about everything related to IT, literally be a sponge and try and fill your brain with every piece of trivia you can regarding computers, this will make sure that you come across intelligent to your clients and they will trust you more, you also won't be talking out of your backside every time you are trying to give advice and this will improve your appearance to prospective clients, try and read books, try and do online tutorials, muck around with software, just be involved, don't just sit around and watch netflix. Ideally, you might try and balance some studies along side your business (if you can actually manage that, I couldn't due to the stress levels of always being broke and rushing from client to client). Also keep in mind you will likely be living paycheque to paycheque for a really long time and this will really take its tole on your mental health, you might not think so now, but trust me a few years in to dealing with inconsistent income you will really find your mind resorts to "fight or flight" thinking, your cortisol levels will be through the roof and you will likely resort to some bad habit if you are not careful such as drinking or smoking, so try and take care of yourself, eat well, exercise as much as you can because you will need to find a way through that constant stress. Meditation can also be very helpful. Make sure you have a decent reliable vehicle you can stand being inside for hours and hours every day that has great air conditioning. One big piece of advice would be to seek out as many contracts as you can with larger tech companies as these will be your bread and butter in the beginning. Look for "geek squads" and "pc doctors" in your phone directory, find the ones with the biggest ads, find the ones that pop up first in google and email them offering your services as a subcontractor. Keep in mind they will probably only look at you if you already have some work experience as a computer technician or IT specialist of some type, so this is why I say work for a company first before you bother doing this, because otherwise you will likely go nowhere at all. I did this for a few months when I first started and ended up with around 8 contracts including one where I was servicing a giant retailers pcs through a middle man tech organisation, this was a lucrative deal since I was making $100 bucks a store visit and was visiting on some weeks 6 stores in 1 day once a week, but don't expect to be able to just throw some advertising online or in a news paper and make a living from it. I found that local newspapers like our "messenger" will get you a few clients every month but they are often not worth the expense to advertise in, that being said, I managed to get a good majority of my few hundred clients (after 5 years) from the messenger so I would suggest investigating that path and seeing if its cost effective for you, some months will be better than others so play around with it at different times of the year, usually end of financial year and Christmas are great times to advertise. You could look at building a website for yourself through wordpress but don't spend to much money or time on it because ultimately it is just a business card for your clients and shows them you are serious, but most people will find you through either word of mouth or your advertising. Another effective strategy for advertising I found was writing personalised letters offering your services and going for walks around the block dropping them off. Trust me when I say, don’t go to some printing company and ask for flyers, print them off yourself, and don’t print “vouchers” or “Ads” print letters with a personal message on them “Hi, my names xyz, and I fix computers in your area, I can do xyz services for only $xyz” works best, be polite and friendly. Don’t charge a fixed price EVER. Never go around saying “$99 to fix everything” you will be stuck at people’s houses all day helping them with every little problem and feel completely drained and have annoyed the rest of your customers for that day because you will have to reschedule them. SEO is pretty much a fools game with this stuff, at my very best i was on the 4th page of google for my area even after sinking a lot of money in to it and pretty much learning how to do it for myself. For anyone thinking of radio I burnt around $4k on radio ads and got 1 client, so don't bother, I perfectly chose my demographic and station and ran a campaign for 3 months and literally got nothing from it. Vehicle Signage doesn't do much for you either so I wouldn't waste the money, in fact I'd intentionally avoid it because all you get are idiots banging on your window when you are parked asking your prices and then never ringing you, even when you low ball them. You might also try signing up to services like Uber and Menulog in the beginning too because these can give you a little spare change between jobs in the beginning, though honestly, again, they will make you absolutely peanuts and depending on your vehicles running cost may actually end up costing you money, use them as a last resort to fill up your wallet on a slow week. Get a good accountant, shop around, don't get one that charges you an arm an a leg, get one that’s used to working with small business and knows how to get you a good return and does things by the book, this can really make a big difference at the end of the year when you need that extra refund or are dreading how much you will need to pay.
      Anyways, hope all that helps people out there, really like I said before, get an actual job and focus on educating yourself as much as you can, preferably through a college. If you really must do this, prepare yourself for a hard slog and make sure you have other goals you are focusing on, don’t make this your life like I did, there are better ways to get to a high paying income and most of that involves building credentials through education and work experience.

The average customer won’t come to you for something extremely complicated lol it’ll be stuff like “why is my computer not working etc” I know a guy that works out of his house & does a better job than geek squad because I can reach him anytime & go back anytime for whatever questions 10 at night if I needed.

      If you wan't to start your own I.T. business don't focus on residential customers, you won't make enough money there to sustain yourself.
      You will need about 10+ years of experience in different business environments to understand how systems and networking actually works and functions in different environments.
      Without years of experience and a ton of knowledge you will bury yourself.

      That's what the rest of this channel is for. Motivation, helping, encouragement. You want to start a computer repair business? Don't bother. Nothing but facts.
      If you're smart you will actually learn something about the industry, how an Enterprise I.T. environment works and you will become a consultant.
      But if you're so dead set on having a "computer repair business" know your competition is 15 year old kids who love to remove viruses and fix iPhone screens/replace laptop screens, and trouble shoot printing issues for whatever the cost of a gram of good reefer is in their area, and they don't need to know how to do any of it they can just TH-cam the fixes.
      The money is in servicing other businesses and becoming their I.T. resource or CONSULTANT. BUT don't even think about doing that until you have experience, understand how a business environment SHOULD work and why, and did I mention experience? There's a lot to know, from basic troubleshooting, to networking, server Management, user Management, exchange sometimes, linux sometimes and now you better be damn sure you're up to date with the security side of this field because you'll just set yourself up for failure and lawsuits.
      A real nerd or I.T. professional doesn't start a "computer repair business"

    But i have to say the rest of what you said doesnt remotely apply this kind of business. If anything what you said is more relevant to a contruction business like mine 😅

    Knowing everything isn't an option, neither when starting out nor as a seasoned IT vet because you can't know everything. You need to get good at searching for answers on the Internet and looking through documentation. Unless you're going to be one of those jerks that just formats the drive for any problem like the big box stores.

    You need to know everything to start an IT business? seriously...lol.. that's old way of thinking, IT world is changing rapidly, there is no way to know everything and you don't have to, what you need to is a skill of really good at googling for solution for clients's need and be able to present yourself as a smart person, at end of day, you will find out it is about business skill that will determine your success not much about IT skill, there is not much to learn these days, it is all become automatic and companies replace defect devices more than fix them.

    My pay for the software and labor and I will do the hard work isnt feasible after only 5 months in business.
    Dont listen to this guy my main clients are people 35 and above and it's there personal computers.
    Virus removal and tube ups (hdd to SSD) upgrade ram etc.
    Sure I am working 8 hours a day 6 days a week and I probably could make that same with 1 business doing 5 hours a week. Even though I am working my ass off at least I am still getting paid and profiting in my first year.

  • @spawnuniverse2684
    @spawnuniverse2684 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Zack. Is this video focused on "Computer Repair Businesses" only or ALL I.T. businesses? You talked about I.T. businesses in general then suddenly throw in an example related to computer repairs. An I.T. business can be making revenue of websites, youtube, writing apps, etc. Anything connected to entrepreneurship and some kind of technology can be considered as an I.T. business.
    You basically said that a collage student cant expect to build an successful company after getting a degree(without loads of experience). Again... is this only focused on the repair industry? What is a better mentality? To go to collage and study to go and work for someone or to study with the mindset to start your own company. You will do better in collage this way because you know where you are going. I have seen it this semester.
    Something that I feel people lack in today's world is entrepreneurship and you discouraged it in this video. If your business is unique and needed by the industry and provides the service/product with quality and value, why wouldn't it be successful. You can start with a small company and this way gain experience way faster than someone who is working for someone else. The key is to know how to run a business. It also means nothing if you know "everything about IT" and you don't know how to run a business. The result will be the same either way. If you provide the same service/product as a very successful company of course the company is not going to show growth.
    If I have a wrong perception please correct me, but this is how I see it. I know I have way less experience than you and I am not trying to sound smart or anything. It makes sense what you are saying but I think there is a lot more to it than just this. I would like to learn more about this topic. Thanks for bringing this up and making the video.
    Kind Regards

    • @Itcareerquestions
      @Itcareerquestions  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This video's primary focus is on I.T. Support Businesses. There is such a cloudy/gray area when it comes to the term I.T. it can be lumped into so many categories. Anyone can start a business doing web development that is completely different than anything else I.T. related in my opinion, the same can be said for TH-cam and app development, those are different beasts entirely. They get thrown into the I.T. category but again I.T. is such a braud term it can mean many different things depending on who you are talking to.
      I'll try to respond the best that I can to the rest of what you said. Entrepreneurship is great and I definitely would encourage that to anyone. However when it comes down to starting an I.T. business - Mainly talking about any type of support business related to I.T. - meaning you handle the support of their computers, their servers, their network, data management, user management, firewalls, etc... You may leave college and have an idea on how most of these things function and are setup but that is highly unlikely. You also will not have a firm grasp of how business networks are setup as everyone is completely different from one another.
      With that said I am definitely discouraging people from trying to start an I.T. business straight from college or with little experience. You will most definitely get yourself into more trouble by not having a firm grasp of all things information technology, and this takes years upon years to actually have a firm grasp of how things work. If you want to focus on residential computer repairs that is a completely different story, but it is still not recommended in my opinion.
      If you want to start an I.T. Support Business/Computer Repair Business get experience and lots of it. If you don't you are almost bound for failure. I don't know about you but it would be pretty terrible to get into a business and start doing their support and completely destroy the way their server is setup or how their switches are configured. God forbid something happens with exchange and you are trying to recover gigs upon gigs of emails when you've never done that before. There are so many different variables that can happen that college will not prepare you for.
