I've been a professional photographer since about 1987. I shoot people, almost exclusively, (models, headshots, portraits, events, graduating seniors, etc.) although I did shoot weddings for about twenty years. I bought a 7d when it first came out and another one about a year later. I still have both of them. I use them on occasion, but not as much as I used to. The 7D is one of the best cameras of its generation. I'm a photographer who believes that it's not a photograph until it's printed, and I've enlarged prints from the 7D to 30"x40" many times. And with today's noise reducing applications like Topaz, or denoise in camera raw, you can shoot at extremely high ISOs with the 7D and fix any noise issues in post processing. This camera is built like a tank. It was built for professional use, and it lives up to that reputation. Good job on explaining the 7Ds features.

After using an EOS Digital Rebel for over 20 years, I just picked up a used 7D (as well as a 20D) on the recommendation of a friend who is an expert photographer. The next step is to learn how to use them! This video is very helpful. Thanks for posting!

    Thank you for the video.
In fact, I was kind of late in realizing what a gem of a camera Canon 7D is. So, I bought it rather late in early 2021 used. Got it in good condition with 19k shutter actuations. It's a great sports camera and I use it for wildlife photography purposes as a hobbyist. This DSLR possesses amazing shutter life, some of my friends got 500k shots and counting!
Undoubtedly, it's a great camera and I hope to continue using it for many years to come.
There's one caveat though. I found the Canon APS-C DSLRs weak in recording videos. My 70D and two 7Ds stopped recording videos in the field when I tried to film a few bird clips. Now, I use a dedicated handycam in the field to record casual videos.
As a still photography camera, this is my goto body to shoot birds in flight paired with the great EF 400mm f/5.6L USM.
I don't plan to move to mirrorless ever. Those cameras do not and won't ever be able to resolve the EVF lag issue which is important to me for capturing wildlife action in the field. One example, if I anticipate a bird to take off from its perching position; I just aim the camera and focus on the subject waiting for the moment when it really takes off. When it does, I can see it instantly at the speed of light and full press the shutter button thus capturing the all important initial frames. On the other hand, it arrives little later in the EVF of a mirrorless camera, no matter how modern it is, making me miss that moment when I capture those frames.
    Thanks again.

I absolutely love mine! Got $3,200 worht of camera gear in a "fire sale" from someone who needed some quick dollars.. $800 in fact...great set of three lenses...one looks like a bazooka. I am not a professional, so its not a tool for me, so it is way more horsepower than I ever really need, so, it is fun! At my daughter's college event I had a student ask me if I was professional, nice little rush of flattery, but "No. I am just a Dad with a camera." :) I love your content, maybe, slow down just a little...I am excited about it, too, but I am trying to learn about it at the same time. :)

@@DSLRTRAINING I like your content, as I noted in the past. I just got to do my first "professional shoot" for a big non profit, I mean, global non profit, and true to form, I donated my services. :) I have like 500 + photos to go through tonight...tough venue...under a large pavillion in an open field under blazing Texas sunlight...shooting from shade with brilliant lighted backgrounds, or into the shade from out under the sun...a lot of trial and error with settings due to the contrasting lighting situation. Fun.

Great Camera! I have had mine for 12 years, still use it for wildlife photography. Every once in a while a camera comes out like the 7D that stands out above the rest. 7D, 5D Mark IV for example. Mirrorless are great but DSLR's are still kings among cameras.

There was a lot of hoopla prior to the intoduction t this camera. When it finally came out there were a lot of complaints if I remember correctly. I purchased mine around 2011. It was a fine camera but nothing to write home about. This was a very heavy camera compared to my prior 30D and 40D. The Manual was over 200 pages long ! There was so much customization to this camera that one could spend years learning each one. I winded up selling mine because whenever I used flash, or Strobes the battery life would diminish by quite a bit. I sent the Camera to Canon, but they could not find anything wrong with it. A few years later i purchased the 6D. The orignal 7D was a flop, the subsequent version, the 7D mark II was much better and still is.

i sold some fuji gear (xt1 18-55 and 50-230xc lens) a few years ago now and bought a panasonic fz1000 bridge camera because the fuji lens choice was a bit limited and expensive for a hobbyist i just couldnt justify the £ of lenses, had the bridge for a couple years now but just sold it - im at the point were i need a larger sensor and to be able to swap lenses - i like to take my camera out with me and shoot other motorcyclists out on the road or take it to trackdays etc so im weighing up the following...
7d, 7dmk2, M5 or M50 - or Nikon d7200, sony a7ii - i had considered a return to fuji with an xs10 or xh1 but you still have to pay through your nose for lenses.. really like what the m5/m50 produces but the EFM lenses stop at 50-200mm anything else has to be an adapted EF lens for a longer reach and then the camera becomes a bit unbalanced due to the small nature of the M5/m50 - so i started having a proper look at the 7dmk2 on flickr and came across the 7d - its still producing some absolutely MEGA images from what iv seen, even fast moving motorcycles on the track using one of the 70-200 2.8 usm lenses or 100-400 usm lenses, would you say its a mistake to buy a 7d and one of the two mentioned lenses? or should i spend the extra on the 7d mk2?

@@s1dew1nd3r4 As long as you don't need to go above ISO 800 all that often and if you can pick up a low miles one why not as they are pretty cheap. Plus check out DigitalRevTV's 7D torture test! Also look up a Canon 70-210 EF USM lens. It's a great fairly compact long zoom. No stabiliser but it doesnt weigh like a F2.8 and you can pick them up for like £90 to £130!

From what I've heard canon cameras
Done mind third party batteries unlike some other makes that freeze
Up when you put a third party battery in them because after all the older a
Camera gets the more likely the fact will be that you end up getting a third party battery as a replacement because they don't last forever

Bought one for £120, prefer this over my 1d bodies (shock horror) when coupled with a 150-600mm lens those bodies were seriously too heavy and I ain't a weakling....ISO yeah noisy, but expose to the right more in bad light if you must and just de-noise in PP, they get a bad rep for noise unfairly but software has come in leaps and bounds over 10+ years. How did you overcome the 7d "Soft Focus" problem? I shot a 60D for years before my brother upgraded and I sent the 60 off to my Dad and went to this. Most things were fine, but at the time my daughters were playing travelling soccer and I took lots of pictures, up close was fine but mid telephoto (300mm) this camera couldn't autofocus at all. Expensive lenses, cheap lenses, didn't really matter. Google had 1000 "cures" for it, but Canon did admit there was an issue send it in for $500 and maybe we will fix it.... yeah... Landscape, tripod, wide angle great.... fast action autofocus.... not.

A reboxed T3i? With a much better viewfinder (Pentaprism vs pentamirror and 100% at 1x vs 95% and .85), much larger body that is weather sealed, much better controls, joystick, huge and efficient wheel, a top lcd panel, 19 focus points and all cross type versus 9 focus points and only 1 cross type for T3i, 8 frames per second versus 3.7, 2 Digic 4 processors versus 1. I could go on.......
So no, not even close to a reboxed T3i.

@@sb_khokhar0786 Your aperture is too wide making your depth of field too shallow. Remember, a bigger number is a smaller aperture, so if your lens is an f/2.8, try stopping down to f/5.6 or f/7, it will give you a deeper depth of field and keep everything in focus.

If you get a newish one with a decent lens you'll be okay for a while. R6/10 Are today equivalent. Sub and hit the bell

@@DSLRTRAINING Hello, thank you for replying can you give me just a little more information. 7 years back I had a canon 7D and was shooting events ready to freelance before the camera got stolen. I have an itch to start freelancing. I am trying to buy a second hand because of affordability, but many of the options are like 7-12 years old. To be honest, I just want a really good camera so I can photograph corp events or maybe move up to wedding.
Looking at either Nikon and Canon, thanks for any help.
