First, they didn’t give UA their independence back, and they just ended getting dragged under by MGM’s financial issues. To be fair, though, UA’s own financial problems after “Heaven’s Gate” nearly sunk them both. Second, and most importantly, MGM kept the Bond franchise. They should have given it back to UA. Once they lost it, their fate was sealed.
