This is brutal. I got the plat first for lounge access and was hoping to get the gold soon. SUBs are so huge so it hurts to not get one when applying to a $250 AF card. I wish current plat holders would be grandfathered or something.
😬 With things like the credits, lounge rules, and authorized user fee changes. It has been feeling like Amex is trying to switch their view to a more kidless younger demographic that will spend money on things Amex is interested in like trips, hotels, vacations, events, etc.
😬 If you look at AMEX' earnings reports or what they've said at shareholder meetings, intro bonuses make barely any difference to their revenue. Right now they're dealing with a slowdown in consumer spending (fewer swipes compared to 2022), & the entire industry is bracing for a wave of defaults, as interest rates stay high for longer most people expected. When your mortgage goes up, most people pay that first & deal with the credit card company later. JPM isn't affected the way AMEX is because they're ALSO the ones raising your mortgage.
Welp I was affected, this is so sad. I applied for the Platinum since my life style right now was a more travel life but next year I was planning on getting the gold since I was transitioning to a more stay at home/supermaket life
seems counter productive in that if someone has Platinum and wants Gold, they are such radically different cards and Gold tends to be a keeper so why prevent from getting welcome offer? Seems like they would be losing more business this way as we look at other cards for grocery spend.Who cares (other than Amex obviously) which order I get them in if I pay the annual fee and don't close them before a year. I contacted customer service and complained. they need a lot of complaints to report up the chain
😬 I was thinking maybe they were going to add some of those point multiplier’s to the platinum that are normally associated with having the gold and implement an AF increase on the platinum
This hurts since I only have the Platinum and wanted the Gold at some point in the next year or two. Maybe I’ll wait it out and see if anything changes in the future
Same boat as you. We can wait it out-maybe Amex changes course like Delta did. Or we could also get the Green Card now with a bonus and 3x restaurant spend as compared to 4x.
Great video, but rarely fly Delta. Tough for those who do not fly a lot, but welcome to the party- all the other airlines already have these rules or worst.
My anecdotal circumstance can confirm the priority of business over personal cards from Amex. Im not eligible for any personal bonuses ive tried for in over a year (tried for personal green and gold) but ive had no problem being eligible for 2 business bonuses, one delta reserve business and the other being the platinum business. Looks like ill be holding out from the personal side for a bit longer😬.
I also see no value in the capital one saver card. I have American Express blue cash preferred , which gives me 6% cashback on groceries and streaming, which is far more than many or maybe anybody else.
So gold first then platinum? Ok but damn I remember watching your videos saying the platinum first and then gold… good thing is that I haven’t applied for neither so I’m good right now lol
😬 I just got my Plat earlier this year and was hoping to pair it with Gold once I got out of popup jail but this change ruined those plans unfortunately. I think I will still keep the Plat bc I use almost all of the credits and enjoy the lounge. Hopefully one day they revert these new rules but I’m not very optimistic
I feel like they are getting away with it because we have grown accustomed to it, same as streaming services. They got me by doing trials, promos, affordable plans and a year later they have added ads unless you move to a higher tier and I’m pressured. 😬
😬 I sincerely feel amex is trying to repent for essentially handing out their cards (namely the platinum) like candy right after the beer bug lockdown was over. They swole the ranks of membership with people who may not be particularly good for their business model and they are trying to remedy it after the fact.
I have Citi premier, as well as Chase, sapphire and American Express gold card. I’m not seeing much value in Citi premier because of the benefits of the other cards that they give me. With gas some of my other cards often have 5% cashback at least some part of the year and then I have Citi Costco, Visa and I get gas from Costco which is always 4% cashback. I’m still not seeing much value in my Citi premier and getting to the point of canceling it.
😬 See all these changes on the US side but haven’t heard of it on the canadian side! Hopefully all good as we optimize by starting with the Biz Plat and referring back and forth between P1 and P2.
😬 Your perspective from the venture capital side of things is extremely valuable. Amex is definitely disappointing a lot of folks right now, but if we can understand the macro trends that are causing this, that can be really helpful. I think Amex is making some enemies these days, but hopefully it's just a temporary thing. Great video man!
The Amex cards are the big boys the ones on the top all business people over 50 years old have the gold or all of Amex credit cards and charge cards and top tier chase bank cards with over 10 history on all the cards upper 700 credit score keep that in mind💳💳💳💳🏦🌎🦺🛍💍🧉🏝📚🥸🤓🫡
😬 feeling pretty good about getting Amex gold before platinum however I would like to see the 150k MR point bonus return before I consider it again. CSP and Gold are my go to for travel and food rn.
What is the consensus now? Better to just hold off on the Gold card for now hoping Amex will backtrack? Or, just sign up for the Green Card now and get 40k bonus points? This would be for everyday spending including restaurants.
😬 i ve been trying to get the hilton aspire card for a few nonths currently in pop jail. I ve put soend on the hikton card for thr last 4 months at 4 k but its not enough not sure ehat to do
Man… this is just my luck 😬 This is my first foray into the world of credit cards beyond just having one and knowing it’s good to use and pay off. I was really excited to get into a Gold/Platinum combo and was gonna take whatever best offer came first. That happened to be Platinum… like 2.5 weeks ago 😖
I applied for the Schwab Platinum and received a message that indicated that any prior Platinum meant I could not get the sign up bonus. Appears to be a clear change from the prior rule that each flavor of the Platinum was considered different for welcome bonus purposes.
What the best card for travel now? I have the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card currently and use it for travel weekly. Hotel’s rental cars and tickets. Also all food purchases and gas. Should I change cards? This is very confusing
😬 Having had the Amex PRG, and the Amex Delta Reserve, I was eying a switch to the Amex Platinum with the delta changes, but this hurts since it looks like I'd get 0 bonus
😬 thank you for the Amazon deal going on. I had no idea until I watched this video and my partner is sitting next to me browsing Amazon! Massive thank you!
😬 Aloha Sebby, am thinking based on your videos from jumping from the Delta Amex to pure Amex, do you feel it makes more sense to start at gold, and get 70k points now, and then upgrade later, with likely a smaller bonus, or, go for the platinum straight out, with the bigger bonus? Thanks
😬 Just tried to get the gold one month after I got the Platinum and found out about this rule. If I had known then, I would have done it the other way around😭.
😬 I'm actually really happy that Amex finally added some credits to the Business Gold Card. To me it was a pretty big disparity between the personal Gold and the Business Gold considering right out the gate you were paying a higher annual fee on the Business Gold Card. And the $80 increase is more than covered by the credits. I wasn't too happy about taking away the 25% points rebate for booking travel on the BG but I have the CS Platinum to cover travel aspect and make up for that change. BTW, I did speak to an Amex rep to ask questions and get a clear understanding of how the new BG changes work and told them I heard about the changes from Ask Sebby. The rep said that he and other Amex reps watch and listen to you and they like your content and he said that they have gotten a lot of business come their way because of you "Ask Sebby" 🐐 💪🏾 .....great video!
I don't know. I have the amex plat, and 2 months ago got the green. applied for the hilton aspire and got a popup that I was not eligible for the bonus. thoughts ? are they getting stingy with welcome bonuses. I of course will wait because the card is not worth it to me with out the bonus
😬 why is no talking about how the classic gold and other discounted gold and platinum card are excluded from this restriction. This ,means they are going after hackers and not long time holders. And no having the Amex classic gold ($169AF)doesn’t stop you from getting the bonus on new gold ($250)
😬 I’ve never had any of the personal MR cards, so I can start from a clean slate if I want to get the bonuses on the Gold and Platinum. I think the Green and the Hilton family would be the next cards to fall under the new rules.
The general rule is what is rhe expected value of the credit card offerings. As the economy changes the risks and costs are going up. This means Amex valuation of a given customer has changed. Some of the Amex cards were focused on customers who's value has become lower. When I got my 1st Amex card, there was only one type. Amex was travel oriented and the card was just one of its offerings. I used Amex travler's check when traveling overseas. Can I even buy a traveller's checks? I also used the Amex offices to exchange money and as a mail drop. Many of these services no longer exist because Amex didn't make money at them
😬It says that I'm preapproved for the Green, but when I apply, the popup window arrives saying I'm ineligible for the SUB. I have the Gold and Platinum, which I pay to zero each month. I also have the Hilton Aspire and Surpass, and Delta Platinum and Reserve. I pay them all each month in full. If it was too many cards or not making some interest off me, I figure I wouldn't be approved for the card. But they seemingly WANT me to have the card, they just don't want to lose what they lose when they give out the usual incentive. Thanks, and love the channel(s).
hey sebby, kind of confused, so i never had the gold or platinum cards ever. i only have the blue cash every day. will i still get the bonus offer for the gold if i apply for it today since i never had it?
Just wanted to add this as a data point. I have the regular Amex platinum and just got approved for the Morgan Stanley platinum and qualify for their 125k bonus as of 10-9-23
It's frustrating to think that AMEX is optimizing around people who won't fully utilize their perks. What's the point of great products if you don't want people to use them?
I got out of pop up jail on 10/6 to not only getting a welcome offer on the gold card but an elevated target offer. I’ve had the platinum for almost a year. Weird.
I've kept my Gold Card and been pretty happy with it. I dumped the Amex Plat a while back because it really has changed to be a glorified coupon book. Was thinking about grabbing it again but honestly, it sucks ass for people with families like my self. The fact that you now have to pay to for any # of guest to the centurion lounges is a huge buzz kill. 2 Player mode is more expensive and I don't see any value of paying $695 for it. You know next year they will raise the price to a cool $1k for an AF. If you're single and want the flex, it is the card to get. I've been pulling a Ben though. Paired up my Amex Gold with the Venture X. So far so good and getting good value out of it especially, in two player mode.
As someone that has Amex coming up on their credit card application list, should I be applying for Gold first then Platinum now? I remember the logic was always Platinum first to secure the 150k offer then Gold after.
All these changes are so confusing 😬 if I had the Gold and MS Platinum before, and now apply for the vanilla Plat, does that mean I would not be eligible for the welcome bonus?
I have to get the gold card first! I think this is really advice on the way to go if you don’t have any Amex cards as well as getting the Delta Blue before getting the gold because of their restrictions. 😬
Hi Sebby, 👋🏽 Great video, like that you included the math section. Ultimately, Amex needs to remain profitable. I appreciate you mentioning that some people do not care about “maximizing value”. Caution, this comment is long. Some people only want 1 or 2 cards not 5 or 20 or so on. Also, I keep listening to the credit card TH-cam group say the Platinum is a travel card and not to use for everyday spend. Yes, the card includes travel and premium travel perks with a strong travel multiplier. However, according to Amex, it is an everyday luxury card. - Point of view: Historically, the majority of no annual fee cards have payment processing and some protection, that is typically all. The Platinum Card has a laundry list of features, everyday and premium. - Also, some people aspire to be a Centurion Card member so they only spend on the Platinum to work toward the Centurion invitation. Thank you for discussing that some do not view the Platinum as a “travel” card. Honestly, the Green Card has more travel including transit multipliers. Another thought for changes: People may be using the cards contrary to want Amex wants, as well as cancelling, upgrading, or downgrading too often so they are changing terms to help people better understand.
Damn. Applying for gold card was on my mind but since I was within two American Express cards within 3 months rule I was just waiting for a couple of weeks more before applying . This is a bummer that I cannot get a bonus on the gold 😔
Good thing I got my gold card as my first (and still only) amex back in 2021 as it just made more sense for my lifestyle despite the higher bonus/more attractive perks on the platinum 😬
😬 I'm still excited to nab a Gold and a Plat, but since I just got the Green I'm going to ride that one out for 3-5 months before applying for another card. My income is seasonal so it doesn't make sense for me to get the Plat or Gold when I can't take full advantage of the spend amounts for the intro bonuses.
Side note, is something going on with Amex's web interface? I'm having trouble logging into it on my PC's web browser and I don't use the mobile app. Obviously not tech support here, but just curious if anyone else was experiencing that.
Thanks as always for all the information, basically if I have a platinum now and went for the Schwab they will not give me the welcome offer correct [B/C/D] but would this also apply to someone who was only a supplemental card holder never a primary one? 😁
😬I’m eligible for the 40% Amazon offer. I have a personal platinum and business gold. They repeatedly target me to get a business platinum with 150K MRPs. I’m teetering on upgrading my personal BCE to BCP bc I receive an upgrade offer almost every time I log on. Decisions…decisions
😬 Any thoughts on Upgrade offers? I have an offer for 75K MR to upgrade my AmEx Gold to Platinum. Perhaps this might be fodder for a video in itself-Upgrade Offers in general that is. Thanks for all your research!
Kinda confused. My game plan was to get the Platinum and then the gold. Does this mean I can’t do that and get the bonuses? My cards: - venture x - sapphire reserve - Marriott bonvoy boundless - freedom unlimited - random credit union card 755-770 credit score
In your first year as a new American Express® Gold Rewards Cardmember, you can earn 5,000 Membership Rewards points for each monthly billing period in which you spend $1,000 in purchases on your Card. This could add up to 60,000 points in a year.does this mean I gotta wait a year for 60k points,it’s the gold card btw,is it separate? Will I get my spending points then extra points on the side?
😬 I just want the platinum card, I finished my bonus spend on the gold, My friends sending me referrals for the platinum but it puts me in pop up jail, I don’t understand why I’m in jail, Never had the platinum card before, I’m a new American Express member sense April 2023 so I had the gold for 5 months for a month I focus all my spend on the gold, I even open up a savings, CD and checking with direct deposit with American Express but it did nothing, I started using my American Express debit card because I guess Amex gets paid from that so I’m using both Amex debit and gold, Going to reapply again in December and hope I get the platinum, What’s the point of friends referrals if we can’t get the card
If I already have Gold and Plat, should I hedge and try to pick up the Green soon to lock in a SUB before they add in this restrictive language? (If I'm even out of pop up jail, that is...)
I'm a little confused. The chart says to get the gold first, then the platinum, then the schwab, morgan stanley...but then you said to get alternatives instead of the gold.
My Delta Reserve just got downgraded to the Delta Platinum. Done with their hamster wheel games, 😬Grrrr Great insight into Amex's side of the business!

No offense to some of you. But the lounges have been an unruly filthy crowded mess.
Truly.
No longer a safe space, too crowded and families.
Three things:
1) They need to empty out their lounges.
2) The platinum needs to be a bit more exclusive
3) They foresee a credit crunch and want to weed folks out. 😬
Your point about Schwab users is spot on!
Instead of making platinum more exclusive they could always put something between platinum and centurion (possibly called diamond card to emmulate elo ranking systems.Or weed our platinum but make something between playinum and gold card.
This is brutal. I got the plat first for lounge access and was hoping to get the gold soon. SUBs are so huge so it hurts to not get one when applying to a $250 AF card. I wish current plat holders would be grandfathered or something.

:)
😬 With things like the credits, lounge rules, and authorized user fee changes. It has been feeling like Amex is trying to switch their view to a more kidless younger demographic that will spend money on things Amex is interested in like trips, hotels, vacations, events, etc.
The lounge guest fee is a positive thing. It was getting a bit out of hand and way too crowded.
😬 If you look at AMEX' earnings reports or what they've said at shareholder meetings, intro bonuses make barely any difference to their revenue. 😬 used your link to get the venture x last week! Thanks for all the videos!
Thank you for your support! :)
can you get the sign up bonuse for Morgan Stanley's AMEX platinum if you already have other AMEX platinum since it is not in the writing?
Ugh - I have the platinum, but was waiting to sign up for the gold during the holiday shopping season. What would you do if you were in my shoes?
🥶 Amex caught me in the middle of my switch from the vanilla platinum to the Schwab…. Good fight
Lucky for me, I’ve gotten the bonus on both platinum and gold. But not the green which remains unaffected, im feeling lucky, might go to Vegas 😂
Hopefully the Green doesn't change anytime soon.
Envy u
Same. Done all 4 Plat SUBs, Gold SUB and now targeting Biz Gold. Haven’t done Green yet but I think I should, soon.
I just got the Lowe's business Amex and got the pop up that I am not eligible for the intro promo but they gave me a 25K limit. I found that odd.
Lounges are to get away- but they are way crowded and less of a benefit these days
I also see no value in the capital one saver card. I have American Express blue cash preferred , which gives me 6% cashback on groceries and streaming, which is far more than many or maybe anybody else.

😬, thanks for the info
😬 so many changes to keep up with!
😬big time yikes. credit card debt at all time high topping 1 trillion. I think a lot of issuers are going to start tightening to offset defaults.
Thx for amex Amazon offer. Got 50% up to $80. Nice.
What subreddit is being shown in the first few seconds of this video?
I got the Amazon offer for %15 off up to $15 back. The weird thing is that the terms specifically state that I have to use at least 700 points. 😬
Are those tweets by Amex in your thumbnails real? Lol
Of course not 😆
I have to get the gold card first!
Ill say it again , i miss the credit card game circa 2018
Same 😬
I had the platinum first in 2020 and then I applied the gold at the beginning of the year I feel fortunate that got both sub
Greetings from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 ask sebby
They plucked up the audible credit
😬 only got 15 off amazon with using 715 MR points. No thanks. 😂
My cards:
- venture x
- sapphire reserve
- Marriott bonvoy boundless
- freedom unlimited
- random credit union card
755-770 credit score
Get the Gold 1st, then the platinum. This way you are eligible for both subs
Thanks for the link Sebby! I got 50% off up to $80, bought a ninja air fryer 👍🏻.
Enjoy!
😬 . . . oh well, there's always straight cash back cards!
Lucked out & just grabbed the Green & Gold a few mths ago. Both with elevated bonuses!
I want the business platinum later.
Very interesting times
Some people don’t want to keep up with the Amex changes, so presenting some options.
😬 I am monitoring the changes before I change my business plan and strategy.
I guess no Swab platinum for me 🤷♂️
My Delta Reserve just got downgraded to the Delta Platinum. Done with their hamster wheel games, 😬Grrrr
Great insight into Amex's side of the business!
😬 I'd recommend getting a Ninja Creami. I have one and it creates great ice cream. Just make sure to get an extra set of cups (they run out quickly).
Thanks! Was debating between the Ninja Creami or splurging on the Breville.
@@AskSebby Get the Ninja Creami Deluxe like the example you displayed. It is so worth it. My best household purchase this year.
I got 50% off ($80 max) via that Amex MR Amazon promo. Was not gonna buy anything on Prime Day but they got me. 😂
😬 Ninja Creami is life changing. You should watch chef Chris Young on how it's a home version of a $3500 pacojet.
