As a ridged chair user for many years I can hole heartedly say that this video explains it all perfectly and it is exactly how it really is. All the advice, explinations, and tips are spot on, so nice to see a video that is uplifting and talks about how a wheelchair is like clothing and that a chair user can indeed have fun, feel attractive, and feel confident rather than all the stereo types that are placed on us. If you want a real chair, a good chair, one that will not only be highly functional but also good looking and make you feel very confident, attractive, and happy, follow these tips and select a real ridged frame chair!

I am 45 years old and have fended off the use of a wheelchair for the past 21 years but am now unable to walk without crutches. This means when I go out with my family I am often in a lot of pain if we visit a park or in to town so I am starting to accept I need a wheelchair but I was even in denial when I bought the one I have now. Thank you for all the useful tips and encouragement.

Cost is the biggest factor - it's a niche market, so manufacturers charge whatever they want, because they know you have to have it. That means many wheelchairs are out of the reach of most Disabled people, especially if you're unlucky enough not to have a job.

Or you can live in California where basically everyone qualifies for Medi-Cal, no copay, full coverage. (California wanted single payer, were liberal here).
Or you can live in a developed country with good healthcare.

As a C5 quad who HAS to use a powerchair it suck ballz that there aren't more companies with better designs and it AMAZES me that we haven't yet started using Li-ion batteries for power consumption.

Great job. Injured my hip and my left leg is like rubber. Will go for an operation some day but with COVID still on the loose I can wait. Could get crutches I suppose, but I tend to get dizzy or unbalanced rather quickly. I am 62 so a fall could result in even worse injuries. You are so cute too!!

Luggage carrier on the chair is a lifesaver if you travel or even in a shop if the shop doesn’t have good baskets that can be put on lap, or you don’t want a dirty basket on your lap. If getting the plastic luggage carrier it really doesn’t add weight to the chair as they’re very very light, and they’re not in the way when folded up when not using them. I’ve had my Caddy luggage carriers since October 2018 and I honestly don’t know how I managed without them for 5,5 years! The luggage carrier has saved my ass quite a few times by now and I’m so happy I got them

The best chair on the market is Mobility Plus Australia. ......I have just got a Levo it's a standup chair with power assist and it's an absolute great chair. You hit the button on the arm rest and it stands you up. Look them up and it's like a sport chair.

Although I'm 10 years late, you have a nice informative video. Right now I'm still trying to get a diagnosis but looking for a chair when I have my episodes in the morning. I can't do anything really. So, I need a chair that's simple but to where I can get in and out since I can't put weight on my legs. Ima save your video. I honestly don't want to get something too expensive and they find a cure but then I don't want to be bedridden for half the day. So much stuff to think about.

My occupational therapist wanted me to have carer breaks, arm rests and crutch holder as extras. I refused it all LOL She did however force me to have fold foot rests and wheelie bars :P This week the foot rest was changed to a rigid, and wheelie bars were removed. Suddenly my chair is about half the weight of before, and much better to propel :D I don't have taper though. I'm not para, just very limited walking and standing. Think next chair will be with taper though!

The larger your rear wheel the SLOWER you go. It's simple gearing, like on a mountain bike. 1st gear is GIANT and 20th gear is tiny. It takes more rolls to spin a 26 than a 24 in a complete circle. Rear tire size is VERY important and changing between 24's and 26's has a drastic change in performance. Many go with a 25, a happy medium.

Curbs has definitely gotten easier since I quit using the anti-tip wheels and even easier since the anti-tip wheels were completely removed and the chair got lighter :) I'm in Sweden so don't need to worry about insurance stuff, but it can still be quite the fight for power assist for many who need it, and even more of a fight if needing a real powerchair such as a Permobil or similar. I'm about to dive into that now as there's a winter each year and my joints are crappy :/

If you live in the north, this video doesn’t work. Just a heads up. You want off-road tires for muds and snow, a wider wheel base for stability on hills but don’t go over 3% or you won’t fit through a doorway. 2% or 3% negative camber depending on the size of your doors at home.

Thank you so much for making this video. I loved it, but I did miss something about the camber that I was asked about when I got my wheelchair.
11:29 This makes me think you should have gone for bigger casters.
