Facing My Fears in a $10,000,000 Warhammer Castle!

  • I've just come back from America where I was invited to a small Warhammer event in a HUGE corporate castle retreat.
I had my first game of Age of Sigmar, went on a magical quest and also had a lot of feelings about Warhammer, anxiety, friendship and how to fit in ...
This video gets a little feelsy but I think it was really important to make, so thank you to the whole Tough Crowd for helping me show everyone just how great you all are :)

Just imagine how many people you have helped by doing so (if it helps 1 person or 100 people) it starts them on too a healing path that could have been too scary to begin prior to witnessing your own bravery. When you got given your award for being “the best painting judge” and you had to run away and have a little cry, it brought tears to my eyes. Hi Rogue Hobbies, I recently discovered your channel. I didn’t know what to expect when I started watching this video but I am glad I watched it. I have always dealt with anxiety that stops me from enjoying what I love the most (miniature wargaming). I have had my fair share of terrible opponents that really hurt my self esteem and that made me quit certain games. Even to this day I have reservations playing new people but I am slowly coming out of my shell especially with the new miniature community I take part in (I play Malifaux) I feel like the best thing we can do for a hobby and a community no matter what game you play is just to be friendly and welcoming. We all deal with our own stuff and usually find miniature gaming as our safe space or what we do to relax.
It is a great feeling once you becoming part of a group especially with a group of people you share something in common with :)

I can empathise so deeply that that fear of actually playing warhamner. I have Dyslexia, and mild Dyscalculia, which pair very nicely with my general anxiety and ASD to make the idea of playing even a casual pick-up game intimidating.
Thankfully, in my experience ours is a lovely community, more than willing to tolerate me struggling to count my dice or recall rules immediately if I explain the reasons.
Also, i do things like pre-sort my dice in to different coloured blocks of 10 and make cheat sheets with which strats apply to which units etc.
Also, totally get having to have give yourself a job to cope in a social situation as someone who immediately looks for tables to move or mugs to wash up 😅

Feelings and emotions are part of the human experience and are so often overlooked and ridiculed. Crying in the Frank frazetta museum is not only normal, but the ultimate response for the feelings the power of art should be able to invoke on us. I know I cried my eyes out when I went to the Star Wars costume exhibition in Saint Pete, FL. Me, by myself, a 35 year old 6’ 2” long haired, bearded, construction worker standing in a room full of people looking at me cleaning my eye and nose waterfalls with tissues a kind lady had given me out of her purse. It’s a beautiful thing and it should be accepted and cherished by all.

The fact that someone who's been such a cornerstone in the Warhammer world for a long time was loved for doing her own thing and starting this channel and subsequently was invited to hang out at a tournament across an ocean and was made to feel like one of the gang is really just what makes everything so special to me.

Hey Lousie great video, I dont play just paint and I fell into the warhammer rabbit hole by chance, a friend gave me a model kit to help me deal with my depression and self harming from there another guy I know after I mentioned and showed him my first aircraft gave me a goblin to paint as something different. From there I found warhammer and now I've built and painted stormcast Eternals, Orks, space marines and nighthaunt guards and its four years now I'm still painting warhammer, just started a box of battle sisters and poxwarlkers and fighting the urge to buy a box of ork kill team the price is calling. What I'm trying to say is this hobby is a life saver, my paint collection is crazy lol never thought I'd be this far into this at my age 56 after just 4 years, keep doing you and thanks for the videos to watch and follow you ( not stalking 😅😅 I'm in Scotland so we're both safe 😅😅) great to see you had fun.

I just like being able to walk around, smiling and quoting silly things and enjoying the hubbub. Sometimes all that noise can be a bit overwhelming... but its nice to meld into the background and just be part of the environment.

I'm glad you managed to have a brilliant time in the end, Louise. I'm so glad you got your 1st game of AOS in. I've only played once myself as im finding it hard to convince people at my club to play it rather than just 40k. Doesn't stop me adding to my aos collection, though, as they are my favourite models to paint. Eventually, I'll have a few full armies to lend to my mates so i can get some more games in. The panic room/castle looked great and always more fun when you've made some cool new mates along the way. 😊

I loved this video, because as someone who has recently gotten back into the 40k hobby it's really daunting going to new places with people and...joining in? Being yourself? I'm really glad you got so much out of it, thanks for deciding to put the video out, it's helped me and I'm sure it'll help others too

Troggoths are such fun models! You probably do not need the encouragement, but the troggoths are really easy to convert and combine with other trolls like the Blood Bowl troll. It's well possible to make two headed trolls from the box and a bit of greenstuff and love.
Thank you for the description, it sounds delightful!

Thankyou for sharing this epic vlog. I've found that it's been tough to get friends back out together socially after lockdown let alone with all the hurdles that adult life throws out there. I've got some very dear friends who gather twice a year for a big weekend of wargaming at a luxury lodge in Wales (not quite the scale of that amazing castle). The social side feels more important than the gaming and twice a year doesn't feel enough.
But sharing those moments together mean a lot when months and years tick by so fast.
Great vid. Looking forward to a month of mushrooms and barnacles!

Looking forward to future mushroom videos. I am over time working on my Gloomspite Gitz army with lots of Gobbos and Trolls, so learning how to paint mushrooms (and maybe create some) would be a great help.

It's lovely to see a vlog with the context of your Instagram posts and understanding that it took a lot of mental effort on your part just to be there. You did great.
Also, I did not realize you've only been doing TH-cam for such a brief while... you see quite at home on the platform!
Best of wishes. I hope you're doing a little better every day.
