The ironic thing about the break-in they did not report here is this was a second break in because the microphones they had planted during the first break-in hadn't worked properly, so they had to go back, that's when they got busted...
The most interesting moment of this excellent documentary is towards the end of the film where Jeb Magruder, a Nixon aid, confirms he overheard Nixon give the order to tap phones at the National Democratic Party Headquarters. Nixon was directly involved from the outset.
Simon Cotton Without question Nixon had to have been directly involved. The only difficulty is the hard evidence. Even with Jeb stating that, legally it’s heresay. Nixon’s downfall was truly sad. Sad in the sense that he didn’t need this. He would had gotten the landslide re-election without it. And the loyalty from the plumbers is scary because we have people like that in 2019. It’s a shame our government has this.
@@greencm7142 The only reason he got a landslide victory was because he was saying all the right things to the American people, but bombing the hell out of Vietnam and at the same time had been making moves to make sure he stayed in power - Watergate was one of those power moves. I don't have any sympathy for him. He lost the 1960 election to Kennedy because JFK was more more convincing, appeared sincere in his words and people warmed to him. That is why he was mourned so much after he was assassinated. He was a popular President, whereas Nixon said what the general public wanted to hear, even though he disagreed with them in private. He was out of touch with the general mood. This is exactly how Trump is conning the Americans. Nixon and now Trump are all about personal gain, not financial, but power. During war-time, some freedoms and laws can (and probably should) be temporarily suspended. The trouble was that Nixon had been at 'war' with SOMEONE for thirty years. He couldn't make the distinction between 'political opponents' and 'personal enemies'. If you listen to those involved it is significant that they call each other, even their superiors, John, Al, Roger, Alan etc (a reasonably civil first name basis) but with him it was always Nixon or 'The President'. Tells you a lot.
@callyharley Perhaps the distance between curiosity that I displayed about dislike of a good documentary and the utterly insane paranoia of your comment there are galaxies. 🤦
1:06:32 Liddy didn't say "these are the finest girls from Baltimore, he said it in an even funnier way, even if it wasn't his intention to be funny at all: he actually said: "And I know, from first hand experience...." etc. These low key characters were really odd figures, almost clownesque, if they weren't so potentially dangerous. I'm sure Liddy really was a triggerhappy guy, and he would not have hesitated to kill someone, if the president would have asked him. I guess he saw himself as the Sepp Dietrich of Nixon. I've always wondered, he was with the FBI, but was he a special agent or what ? He seems so bizarre, you almost can't believe that that would be the case. I mean, there are all kinds of people working for the FBI, aren't the special agents supposed to be the elite ? So what did Liddy do there, make charts ? I've never understood why in stead of playing the card of presidential privilege, the WH simply didn't say the tapings were only kept one week, to allow to make reports or re-listen to certain conversations, and then destroyed. Who could have proved it wasn't so, if everyone kept "stum" ? If you want to play dirty, a) prepare for whatever backfire might happen, even the worse case scenario's, and b) play dirty goddammit. Finally, I really can't believe these long haired plain clothes policemen were simply purely by coïncidence near the Watergate building. That part really is odd. (some writers claim that Baldwin betrayed the "operation" from the start) But on the other hand, if that security guard hadn't noticed the tape on the door, he wouldn't have raised alarm, so even if these Serpicos were in the neighborhood on purpose, how would they have caught the burglars without the alarm raised by the security guard Wills ? Strange story, the last words certainly haven't been told....
Trump is NOT running some criminal enterprise in the White House and getting away with it. The news Media is diving and destroying this country simply because they are not in control any longer.
Whilst Bernstein is quite a likeable guy, Woodward's incredible smugness is so off-putting that I would almost take Nixon's side on the issue of Watergate because of it. I can see why, before they worked together in earnest, Bernstein really did not like Woodward. He thought he was an Ivy League educated, over-privileged snob and because of his smug manner, it's easy to see why Bernstein was repelled by him somewhat.
@Doug Bevins Sorry, you missed the point-- YES, I know .... but there are witnesses, esp. E.Howard HUNT, who revealed that NIXON was "talking in code"--- that when he mentioned Bay of Pigs, he was referring to jfkdeath. Additionally, HE KNEW VERY WELL THE RECORDER WAS ON>>> so you refer to a "phrase" they both identify with ! Feel sorry for you, accusing me of ignorance, when the facts are way ahead of YOU ! Bye.
It was the biggest scandal of the time, and perhaps since the nation formed (although there WERE others that compared), to that date, but yes, the shit we are going through now is way beyond anything that has ever occurred here. What Trump has done, and does, is despicable and embarrassing and corrupt, and a million other things, but half the problem is that the entire GOP is in the tank for virtually all of it.
Sort of. Nixon resigned before the formal impeachment vote in the House occurred. Also, had Nixon went through the whole impeachment process, even Senators in his own party would had voted him out. Nixon would had been removed with bipartisanship. With Trump...it's completely partisan.
Despite Nixon's infinitely greater political experience and presidential credentials when compared to Trump, there are many parallels here. Most striking, perhaps is the enormous expenditure of time, talent and money that was devoted to investigating and prosecuting the illegal activity of a president while other important matters of state seemed to go untended. Also the utter amorality of a president who clearly puts himself - and not his country or countrymen - at the center of every reflection, consideration and decision. The only consolation? This has all happened before and the country and its Constitution was strong enough to survive it more or less intact - though forever changed. Hopefully history repeats itself - in that same way - when the current dark chapter is finally closed.
There has not been a single shred of evidence that Trump did anything wrong or even worse, broken a law. There's HUGE differences between Nixon and Trump. One of which were people were literally caught red handed braking and entering. Second, there was taped evidence of Nixon's knowledge and involvement with his situation. But keep trying snowflake
Extremely well said and well put Eamonn. Let's hope America and Americans come to their senses and democracy survives intact as it is intended to in the U.S.A. I think Trump is too stupid to be truly dangerous and there are still some decent human being Republicans around him who make sure it does'nt become a true disaster?. I'm British, but hopefully will continue to have faith in America and American's to do what's right in the end. The result of Watergate was America truly at it's best. The will of a free people, judiciary and media to stop one man and his cronies from undermining real democracy and freedom. History will always find a way of repeating itself unless we are very, very careful. This said, I think Nixon would have gone down as a great American President if he did not have such personality flaws. That is the irony of Nixon.
@@step4024 Yep, Nixon would've been a great president had he never done himself in. As of now, he's not even rated as a good one despite his achievements in foreign affairs. Trump, on the other hand, is a true outsider with no political experience whatsoever prior to becoming President, and that's where he's different from Nixon. The government shutdown that we've been having for three weeks now hasn't affected me and millions other Americans. I don't think Trump is gonna be impeached, because I just don't see any solid evidence that may warrant his impeachment. Moreover, the Dems that have been pushing for Trump's impeachment would need Republicans to come on board, much like in Nixon's case.
Eamonn Morris - Thanks for your comments! I was also struck by the parallels between NIXON/WATERGATE era and our current and frightening issues with the Presidency of DONALD TRUMP. Evidently, neither men have BOUNDARIES OF DECENCY, both thinking they are above the law. Perhaps different approaches or different reasons; but, unfortunately, the same result......another test of our Constitution and desire for a true Democracy. WHAT STANDS OUT FOR ME is that Nixon did not have financial gain in mind for himself. For Trump, it's ALL ABOUT THE MONEY! I believe Trump will find that running for and becoming President was the WORST 'DEAL' HE EVER MADE.
Honestly the real question was what were they really after...they didn't follow the money far enough back...Watergate was only the tip of the story.
Nixon had everything, but lost it all in shame because he couldn't control his lack of self esteem and failures in the past affecting his judgement.

Gee whizz!! This is soooo much like what is going on in the orange one's office right now!!
It's coming for Trump soon
