    I read the entire Ryan’s th-cam.com/users/postUgkxGqOCINHE0Z0E5gxzSdNi9NWGugRY5Hm2 Plans and was able to make a shed plan. Using Ryan’s Shed Plans alone, the shed itself is great. Where I wish I knew more is with respect to ground preparation and foundations. Maybe that's beyond the scope of Ryan’s Shed Plans.

    Awesome mostly address sheds that the author has built in the past and high-quality sheds at that. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxzaRUJNcbypw-fRBDbqqz43ULIa-1EGP- He does have tips on specific aspects of the shed construction in each example. I get value out of this book by getting ideas on what features will work for MY sheds that I design myself. It has terrific photos, all are professional in quality. Book is quality coffee-table style--shiny, thick paper and a soft cover that is also high quality. I like it.

    quick tip about when firing up a stove in a cold cabin... first open the damper all the way and then preheat the flue a bit with your kindling as you initially get the fire started, as it helps to create an updraft that keeps the smoke from billowing out the front of the stove. just makes it less smokey inside as you're feeding the fire and leaving the woodstove door open.

      never hurts to clean the ashes out as well as. You will get much better performance from your stove and much better heat transfer.

    I remember Birch trees while growing up in Minnesota. They would peel off like paper. I notice you use that instead of actual paper under your kindling. I have moved back to Minnesota after leaving 40 years ago. I have lived in many states throughout my lifetime. Great times, great people, a lifetime of experiences. My home, here and now, is Minnesota. You represent us perfectly!

    So proud to see you guys still care how you live being as young as you are. It brings back memories for me from growing up in the 60s and living poorly, but couldn't ask for any better memories or growing up any other way. Getting up on a cold morning getting the fire going helping my granny make home made Biscuits and gravy and set by the fire to eat and stay warm....ahhh really would give anything to go back.

    Fridge compressors and LCD/LED (most electronics actually) are fine as long as you let them warm up before you use them. I agree about not having running water. Off grid is perfect for a property you want to leave for periods of time.

    I've been watching these channels for a while now and I have never seen a brick type stove (we call them terracota in Romania) in these log cabins in North America. I own a house in the country (I moved my inlaws there and they maintain it) and we have these small mobile terracota stoves with heat reclaimers just above them. The heat reclaimer becomes ultra hot in 2 minutes so that is the first to heat the home, then, after an hour the stove becomes hot as well but if the fire goes out the stove stays hot then warm for 5 - 7 - 10 hours depending on the cold outside. With your metal stove you can't store any heat - it is immediately released to the room (which is fine when the cabin is frozen) but this means it will also get cold fast when the fire is out. Am I right? We had a metal stove and sold it. Cast iron stove would be a step better because cast iron stores heat longer. Love your vids anyway!

    I live completely off grid with running water. Pretty easy to create a low point in your plumbing with a drain valve. Can leave anytime and not have to worry about pipes freezing. I live in cascade mountains.

    • @sixupsprite5501
      @sixupsprite5501 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be fair I have a regular three bedroom two bathroom house and I can pretty easily drain the system as well. Two valves and a garden hose and the house can be freeze proof in half an hour or less.
      Most houses, every one I've lived in, is not hard to winterize if needed.

    • @noyopacific
      @noyopacific ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While it may be easy in principle to set up plumbing to be drained, it is also easy to miss a low point that can freeze and break pipes. You might not realize how cold it can get at Kyle's cabin. (The record low temperature in our area of Minnesota near Kyle's place is -56ºF.) Even if Kyle did have a well and pressure water, the service lines would have to drop down to at least 4' below the surface and have a freeze proof inlet valve with drain to clear out the water lines.

    • @Hardcore-Homestead
      @Hardcore-Homestead ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@noyopacific all my water lines are buried 4' down. Pex water lines have an insane expansion ratio meaning they can freeze and expand a couple inches before they'll even break. I'm out here in the mountains living with running water completely off grid. I've got some experience.

    • @noyopacific
      @noyopacific ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Hardcore-Homestead I'm not doubting that this has worked for you. I don't know how cold it gets where you are but I'd guess it might not get as cold as the Minnesota Northwoods. The ability of Pex to expand is reduced under extreme cold. If you Google the question: "will Pex pipe burst when frozen?" you might be surprised what you see. Again, I'm not disputing this has worked for you. I'm sure your advice is well-intentioned.

    • @Hardcore-Homestead
      @Hardcore-Homestead ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@noyopacific there's alot more to problem solving than just googling things. The ability for pex to expand doesn't mean you can run it on the ground exposed. But underground and then plumb it on the interior of your home and you're never going to have a problem unless you're leaving for a while and that's when you drain it. It's -15 where I live. But it doesn't matter how cold it is when you don't have any water in your pipes.
      Kyle has a tendency to highlight certain aspects of his life that he refers to as "simple". More than likely he doesn't have a well and running water because he couldn't afford it because he is intelligently paying for things out of pocket and not using debt- a method I agree with. Mark my words, if they have kids they'll have running water. When they have water they'll have a drain line. And when they leave they will drain it and when they come home they will fill it and be totally fine.
      The boss of the swamp lives in the far north with -30 and even lower temperatures. He has extensive videos on his plumbing.
      My intentions behind my original comment are good. They also come from experience. Im not watching people on youtube while im in the suburbs or a city. I'm in the boonies. Completely off grid, with kids, a job, a regular life for the most part but completely off grid and in a location some would even call remote.

I had to poop first thing when I got up and my fingers froze… people think this kind of off-grid living is full of discomfort but it’s not. Those cold times are short-lived and actually feel good.
