  • Just in time for Herge's birthday, here's a quick look at the 90th Anniversary Box Set of the Adventures of Tintin from Egmont. This is not a newly designed and redone set of editions - rather, it is a handsome and sturdy slipcase housing all 23 of Egmont's full-sized- album volumes of Tintin adventures.
    Including the 140+page Tintin in the Land of the Soviets and the never-finished Tintin and the Alph-Art, this is a lovely box for for some lovely books, and a definite crowd-pleaser!

    I honestly never gave Tintin a second thought until i started watching this channel and seeing your enthusiasm for the series m still very new to it all but Herge's art alone is phenomenal ! And as a fan of comics here in America & Manga in Japan its great being exposed to European comics as we dont emphasize them much if not at all here in the states ! Mostly Manga or regular comics , so thanks !

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is just wonderful to hear! Although I was sure my love for the Tintin library of adventures was a nostalgic bond for the most, given I had grown up reading them, many many childhood loves have not stood the test of time. Tintin still charms and impresses after all these years, so I'm confident that you will find at least some aspects to appreciate!

      You are right about the emphasis of American comics and Manga here in the States. When I was growing up I lived over seas for a few years and wad exposed to Tintin. It was wonderful and they are still fun now. Try Tintin in America it will have some familiar things in it and it's fun to see our country in the 1920's through an European perspective. Enjoy!

    I can never get enough of the red in the "Red Lotus" cover! Glad to see it getting a mention on the internet :) BTW have you seen the smaller TinTin softcovers? These are roughly as big (or small) as the 3-in-1 hardcovers. And while they cover just a single story/adventure, there is a handful of bonus content and fun contextual info about said story/adventure towards the end. Personally have (almost) all of the larger softcover volumes, but I am just a sucker for bonus content. Especially when it is about TinTin :D

Do you have the option to sell off your current set if you did decide to go for an 'upgrade'? Thank you so much; learning editing is so tough but rewarding!
      I used to switch back and forth in my loyalties between the two 'big Eurocomics' all my life. At first I loved Tintin, then in my early teens I was all snooty about how the history and the puns made Asterix superior, then a reread of Tintin sort of shook me awake to the mastery of the form that Herge showed and developed...These days I don't need to rank them against each other, but I always remember a snarky line I once read - 'There are two kinds of people in the world: those who think Tintin is better than Asterix and those who *know* Tintin is better than Asterix' 😋

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DrumondArt Oh yes, that was my first reaction too! But honestly, 1) it would be impractical given how much that would weigh, negating one advantage of boxsets (the ability to transport all volumes together) and 2) it really is the paperback that needs the protection afforded by the slipcase on a shelf. Given how thin they are, the paperbacks from my childhood have all gotten pretty ragged due to years of standing/stacking, while my hardcovers (albeit new) seem to be holding up fine with no stress on their covers and spines.
      Still, a hardcover box set is probably the epitome of a celebratory edition for people like you and me, so I completely share your instinct!

    Loved Tintin since I was a kid, grew up reading the books in Swedish and watching the 90s cartoon. My favorite has to be The Seven Crystal Balls; it plays out almost like a horror story with the suspense of the seven explorers getting attacked one by one, and that creepy mummy and the clairvoyant in the beginning. Also one of the few that takes place entirely in Belgium. What do you think of it?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kickzillah I love the Seven Crystal Balls and I completely agree with you on the creepy, eerie sense of dread that permeates it. That sequence of all the explorers in the hospital too is a wonderfully chilling one!

      @@ftloc Your personal top 6 video, you mean? Yes I've seen it. You mention that you dislike the climax with the eclipse in Prisoners of the Sun, and I agree on that. Even Hergé admitted it was strange that a society based on the sun would have no knowledge of its cycles. I still think it's a solid adventure and a very underrated album. There's the whole thrilling part with the mysterious boat, and the train sequence, and the vivid exploration of the mountains and jungles. And of course the incredible discovery of the hidden Inca civilisation, behind the waterfall cave. In my opinion the most adventurous of all the books, it features all Tintin is about.
      By the way, you mentioned that you liked the inclusion of India in Tintin in Tibet. What do you think of the depiction of India in Cigars of the Pharaoh?

      Only Tintin in the Land of the Soviets is black-and-white, all others are in colour. Congo is considered racist and the depictions of Africa, Africans, and a lot of the behaviour, is objectionable. So I think it is kept as an academic/ study edition, as part of comics history but not to be taken as a regular/ popular read. That's just my theory though.

      As for the font, in English at least it is no longer the 'Hyslop' lettering that used to be in the books until the 90s. This new font is closer to the original French lettering, they say. It has a slightly italicized look to it, so it is not smaller, but it is thinner.
      I would have preferred the Hyslop lettering because I am very attached to that from my childhood, but I don't think the new lettering is unreadable or too small. It's just not as pretty or as bold for those making the comparison. If you are not comparing, I believe it should be just fine, I hope that helps!

    Hello,
    Can you confirm if all 23 books in this set have the original Hyslop font? The new “digital” font that Egmont is publishing the Tintin books with is absolutely terrible and distracting. It takes away from the immersiveness that Hyslop brought with his handwriting.
    Please let me and others here know so we can buy this set too (of course, by using your channel’s link).

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, unfortunately that 'original' (English translation) font by Hyslop is apparently copyrighted/owned by Moulinsart, I think, and there seems to be some issue(s?) in using it. This box is not a new edition, in any case, but just the all-in-one packaging of the existing Egmont full-size volumes, so they they too feature the 'new' font ('new' for people my age; I just learned this has now been around for a while). It is apparently based on the original French lettering, although again this could be my bad memory mixing things up. I know there are strong feelings about this, and I have my own opinions, but that's probably a different, nerdy video that nobody wants to watch! 😀 Short answer: it's just the same new font as the albums have individually.

    • @Brother.T

      @ftloc  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you; so glad you liked it!
      Re the font, it is not small per se; it is definitely of larger size than the smaller box sets have. However, it *is* different from the thicker Hyslop lettering the English translations used all the way into the 90s. This means the font here is thinner than what some people are used to, and resembles italics. This makes it closer to the original French lettering but does stick out to some who have grown up with Tintin as relatively harder to read. I hope that helps!

    Hi. A new collection of tintin books are being released on the Amazon uk website on October 1st. Do you know anything about that? If you do, will the books be large or small?

      I just added the link below or above. It's for the US Amazon. The original description of this item was misleading and copied from another Tintin collection. The current description might be incorrect as well.

    • @tanim57
      @tanim57 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some things don't make sense. According to the size description, it's supposed to be a small collected edition. But, they are already available and in stock. As you know, a paperback collection was released recently. This might be the hardback version. But, there is no current evidence to prove this.

    • @tanim57

      Also, the price is much higher than the price for a small collected edition or the recent paperback edition.

    Can you please reply Tintin Anniversary yellow box set books all inside are colorful pages? Thanks

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Other than the first adventure - Tintin in the Land of the Soviets, which was never coloured or redrawn - all the other adventures are in the colourized, redrawn (modern) forms in this set. Hope that helps!

    What about the quality of Printing?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They're the exact same books as the common Egmont paperbacks, just boxed together. So, very decent quality, but the new font instead of the old Hyslop lettering, if that matters to you.

    This is the video which i actually needed today. Suddenly in the morning today i thought to collect all the Tintin comics, in their best available format. I had read few in my childhood, but dont have any with me now. I checked Amazon and Flipkart and i was really confused about which one to buy as there are many options available. Hindi edition is my preference but it is not available in hardbound cover and glossy paper. Most of the single issues available from Om Book International in hindi, but are paperback editions, and i am not sure is the cover and paper are of good quality or not. I am even ok with english editions also, which are there in red and grey boxes, but the size is smaller. That yellow anniversary box is best i think with large size and glossy paper..Only problem is that it is not available in hard cover. If you have any idea where can i buy single issues in large size with hardbound cover in glossy paper..please reply..it will be bonus if its coming in a collectors box.

      You can buy the albums in full sized hardcover as I have done, but as you say, there is no box set of those. If you know a printer/binder, or even a local carpenter, maybe you could explore getting a custom box built after getting all the books? (that is an idea that came to me 😋)
      I had heard a rumour about Egmont bringing out a hardcover box set in 2021, but who knows if that was ever realistic and what the situation is now.

      For the Love of Comics thanks a lot for the reply. This is good idea. I checked on Amazon, single issue are there in hardcover and full size. But they are 4x costly compared to Om Publication (800 vs 200). Is it worth to buy them over those from Om Book Publication?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rahulsony569 I have never actually held one of those Om Kidz editions in my hand so I can't speak for the production quality (or the translation) but 200 seems like a bargain price, of course.
      The English editions have a 400-paperback 800 hardback sort of average distinction, which is also a lot, but I bought two or three a month until I had them all in hardcover.
      I just think they will last forever, properly taken care of, in hardcover whereas all the paperbacks from my childhood have fallen apart with re-reading. So I guess it may also depend on if you want to only have them for yourself or are also thinking of your kids or other family members enjoying them?

    • @rahulsony569
      @rahulsony569 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the Love of Comics Understand your point. Hardcover is the best option anyways, despite being costly. I am a collector and want to buy best. Do you know if the Hindi version was ever published in hardcover? I didn’t see that yet.
