I’m a first generation Cameroonian who was born and raised in London, UK. Bushmeat is not eaten too much by me extended family, but I do see a lot of people consume it when I visit. As much as its easy to ban bushmeat, it really is their form of protein. Many of them can’t afford to keep livestock in some conditions (poor fertility in land/ lack of funds etc). For example; say this was in the UK. We’d actually have the option to turn to other forms of proteins (plant for exmaple, maybe even whey protein etc) simply because our country got to the point where its accessible to the majority of the population. Its just not the same in many regions of Africa. _Anddd_ the fact that they and their family members and ancestors have been doing so for years, _decades_ . That paired with the fact that they don’t really have another option as well as familiarity of the meat solidifies their choice to continue eating it. I only pray that they remain in good health! My family in Cameroun mostly eliminated it from their diets as they can afford livestock and do live on fertile ground. It is a privilege to have that option. But I’d be lying if I said all of them completely believe the disease is real…

As an American who was in Liberia during the summer of 2014, I find VICE's coverage of this issue very poor. It's pretty clear that their journalist came in with an agenda to present Liberians as ignorant, superstitious barbarians. The beliefs that are expressed by Liberians in this documentary were held by a few people mainly within a specific demographic. If VICE wanted to do some serious journalism, they wouldn't have had to work much harder to find knowledgeable Liberians who could actually provide them with a more complete story. Many Liberians took the epidemic seriously and it's a shame that this is what VICE chose to produce. As a side note, Liberians don't eat as much bush meat as this video would like us to think. Only the bush people, the poorest of the poor, prefer those types of meat. That's why the bush meat was in the back. In most Liberian kitchens you'll find beef, chicken, fish and other seafood year-round. And no monkey.

It is not burned. There is minimal refrigeration access there, so the meat is dried to preserve it. Kind of like we cure meat into jerky.

I come to realize that before banning only and few source of protein available to mass people. Government should supply alternatively inexpensive meat and protein source.
