  • How do we know a patient has a pleural effusion? Health professionals use x-rays, and computed tomography (CT scans) to look for extra fluid inside the body. Learn how pleural effusions are treated using techniques such as a thoracentesis, pleurodesis, and pleuroperitoneal shunts. Created by Jannah George.

    I was in the hospital for about a month, had tubes and all, it was horrific. I had my lung scraped. It wasn’t good, grateful I made it.

    Thank you. This is the most informative video on pleurisy I have seen yet. I hadpleurisy years ago and now I got it again, due to biking and camping in in cool wet weather for 3 weeks. little by little it's improving. I 1st got it 30 years ago from being out in severe winter weather, -10F. I went to Florida for 4 years and that heat cured it. I find alternating rest and exercise with applied heat is a good treatment. AS long as I don't get too exposed to cold I'm good.

    so quick question. just for clarification purpose. would you say that empyema is like pneumonia? or whats the difference? just the way it began?

    • @chagas8822
      @chagas8822 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Empyema is an infection of the pleural effusion content. Pneumonia is an infection of the lung itself. So, it's basically different places of infection.

    Damn.
    I'm wondering if a pleural effusion can be caused by very-hard coughing as associated with asthma and/or COPD. And, is thoracentesis always required for elimination of the fluid? Can they not instead administer a powerful diuretic like Lasix instead?

    • @DazMcK
      @DazMcK 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No to questions one and two, yes to question three, although only in smaller effusions based on clinical judgement. You can't just toss diuretic at people and expect it to only act on exactly where you'd like it to act

      Usually after a plueral effusion has been drained the fluiid is analized by a patholigist! It could be one of many causes! Pnuemonia,heart issue, cancer, inflamation!

    You can get pain in the lung and nothing will show but if you start to get fluid build up it will show on an xray, I went to hospital a few days back In pain and was certain my xray would show something but it was fine, almost felt I was telling porkies to the nurse.
