- Let's explore one of the most astonishing Egyptian temples - the Great Temple of Abu Simbel. Located 20 km from the Sudanese border, the complex of Abu Simbel marked the frontier - the boundary between the great Egyptian empire and its borderland enemies. Both temples of Abu Simbel (the Great Temple, and the Small Temple known as the temple of Nefertari) were commissioned by one of the most famous and powerful pharaohs - Ramesses II (Ramses II).
Officially the Great Temple was dedicated to Re-Horakhty, Amun-Ra, Ptah, and Ramasses II, but the facade of the Great Temple in Abu Simbel may suggest that, in fact, the pharaoh was supposed to be the most important figure here. This was actually nothing new as Ramesses the Great used to appropriate or build multiple religious structures in all of Egypt as part of his propaganda project showing his achievements, great deeds, and military victories. One of Ramesses II’s most well-known battles was the battle of Kadesh against the mighty Hittite Empire (today Turkey), to which the entire wall of the Great Temple was dedicated.

Wonderful! Beautiful temple. Ol' Rameses sure was into free love! :D imagine having 100 children? Two were enough for me lol. I have 2 questions: 1. Do you know what the wasp hyroglyph means? I see it often.
2. When outside the temple, the statue on the far right has some damage to his lower leg. Underneath the plaster (?) it appears almost to be made of bricks. Am I seeing this wrong? I'm only on a phone. Or is it possible the statues were built in this way with a covering of plaster?

Hey Ancient Sites, I love Egyptian temples. They are a library of information written on the walls, and so much more interesting than the pyramids. I look forward to your vid on the temple of Nefertiti. That cat rocked, and and is probably one of the most influential females in dynastic Egypt. Rameses thought the same, loved her dearly, and erected a temple in her honor. Side note: Rameses 2nd fathered over 100 children....that man "put it around" to say the least...peace to ya AS.
😂 OH yes Ramasses must have been quite busy with his wives and concubines (probably over 200) 😎 Nefertari had to be special to be chosen from such a... crowd :p

@The Prince Of Ta-Shemaw I think it is subjective my friend. In no particular order, I think Ramesses 2nd, Seti 1st, and Amenhotep 3rd are all up there. We could include a few from the old kingdom as well...again, it is subjective.
All Egyptians must be descended by these 100 children. He was not the only one fathering many children.

Hey Cat Man, it would be cool to see AS on a Hawass tour, but I can tell you it would be even more expensive than those alternative tours. I will tell you a quick story. Just out of curiosity I enquired about a Brien Foerster Egyptian tour. I was quoted $6,000 for a 10 day trip....not including flights or spends money. I had no intension of going on a Brien F tour, I just wanted to see what those guys charge. I worked out I could the same (minus a few "special permissions) for a third of that. Unless you are dripping in money, do it yourself would be my opinion.

I’ve been obsessed with Egyptology since I was a child, and Abu Simbel has always been my favorite temple and Ramses is my favorite Pharaoh. Some time ago I looked for videos on TH-cam about Abu Simbel, and there weren’t many to watch. Most just focus on moving the temple, which is fascinating in itself, but not what I was looking for. I actually learned a couple things in this video that I didn’t know because you were actually there in person to examine it. One of my biggest dreams in life is to walk in that temple, where Ramses once stood. I get goosebumps just thinking about it lol. Thank you for the video though, I hope you continue to make more in Egypt.

I was just thinking about how clear your voice is along with the equally clear BEAUTIFUL music in the background. I'm old enough to be your grandfather (Mark Lehner dug me up from an Ancient Site-TRUE LOL) and legally deaf, yet I can her both you and the music easily - without a hearing aid. I CAN'T hear my nextdoor neighbor when she's standing next to me. LOL.
There's a lot of information in your vids, and usually I have to watch them three or four times. I loved hearing the story about Ramses fighting off the entire invading army by himself. I've heard it before from a historian who then remarked "...IS A LOAD OF RUBBISH" LOL 🤣. I'm glad you're able to see this site with your own eyes. Your camera work is actually very good, but no camera can do this site Justice. I can easily see why it was one of your childhood dreams to see it for yourself. I'm glad you had that opportunity and was able to share it with the rest of the world 🌍.

It's an amusing dichotomy how a site of such grandeur and immensity got its name from a humble boy who knew of its location and therefore had his name attached to it. You'd assumed that such a site would have a known ancient name, and no doubt it did, but it is lost in the sands of time.

You realise that Abu Simbel was moved in 1968 when Lake Nasser was created with the building of Aswan Dam. I am surprised no mention of this monumental undertaking was mentioned.

As during a specific day the sunlight would concentrate on Ramesses face in the holiest quarter
I think it's on October 22nd and Februar 22nd and ok, I get it, but these are only two days. They can always dim the lights as for the rest of the year people come to see the Temples and not the sun phenomenon. :)

did it happened to you that the great Ramses just re-take the name already of the statues Egyptians were by no means able to extract and transport , also look at the faces and they do not resemble to the so called Pharaoh
Beferore Rameses there was nothing in there. When it comes to this particular ancient sites all statues are "original".

Yes, in the Ramasseum it's possible. He might have used statues from the temple of Amenhotep III (Colossi of Memnon), which, during Rameses lifetime, was most likely already destroyed. In Karnak as well as in the Luxor Temple he also might have "reused" the statues but not in Abu Simbel, in the secluded place in the desert.
