    This video is a perfect demonstration of why spring loaded tonearms are not used on better quality turntables; you usually find them combined with inexpensive ceramic cartridges with sapphire styli. Even if the tracking force on a spring balanced arm was right on the money at the correct height, the problem is that many records are not perfectly flat, and a radial warp would cause the tracking force to vary from too high to too low throughout the rotation of the record.

    • @BG101UK
      @BG101UK ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Those were my thoughts as well. Also, I'd expect this to be even worse with record changers! The old BSR ones usually had spring-loaded tonearms.

      Yeah but it does mean you can play the record on an uneven surface, which is much more likely to be the case with a portable player. My Ion IPT-01 can play a record while fully vertical because of the sprung arm. These are not "better quality" turntables and are not intended to be

    It seems like this company, Coturn, at least wants to continue to improve their product, and is taking proactive steps at continuing to squish any issues you may have had. Hell, the Sound Burger competition may speed up their efforts too.

    Kudos for them to keep the 18650 cells on sockets. That's great for repairability, given batteries WILL at one point degrade, and a standard size like that, not soldered even, is just the best option bar none. Sure... A separate door for that alone would be better but only marginally, considering it opens up with screws only and then you also access the belt, another thing easy to access and replace.
    And yes the headphone jack is very welcome as well.

    As a child of the 1980s I really enjoy the content of your videos. You talk about the things that I lusted after in my youth and you show how they work, take them apart and repair them...all the stuff that makes my audio geek eyes light up. But you're also up-to-speed on modern technologies so you're able to straddle the worlds of the 1980s and 90s and the world of today, which is perfect for devices like the Coturn CT-01 and the Sound Burger.
    Keep up the fantastic work!

    That’s good of you to revise your video. I have nothing against Coturn and I’m sure 4g tracking force won’t chew up your records. With that in mind, a 450gbp turntable should track within the cartridge specs. Coturn needs to have a quality standard or they’ll never survive.

    I watched the first upload and was typing a comment when the video was set to private. lol so this was what my original comment going to be. Also your content and dedication to being factual and honest is refreshing. Thank you for being you! My original comment was that I am a retired electrical engineer and when you commented about your sound quality problems, (I didn’t notice any but...) I was thinking that we had a lot of issues a few years ago with interference of LED lights with wireless equipment here in the US. It was just a thought. That may have just been our problem here in the states but I know it was a nightmare for us to figure out. It did not effect all wireless equipment but was a major issue on 30% or more wireless modules. I enjoy all your content and look forward to everything you publish. I wish you all the very best of health and happiness to you and your families!

    I have and use the new Sound Burger since two months now and I LOVE IT ! I can't tell if the speed changed over time as I don't have what you got for testing, but my ears are happy... :)
    Looking at the Coturn, it looks awesome too, but I'm a bit concerned about the arm over time. Like you demonstrated it, but also the push/release/push/closing mechanism that I'm a bit afraid over the usage and years to come... I might be totally wrong tho. I really like that there's a competitor tho! I'm wondering if AudioTechnica will improve the 2022 SB version (probably eh?).

    With some research, it became obvious that the force generally needs to be measured at the exact height of record suface. I thought that your scale might be designed to mimic the thickness of a record, and you are supposed to use it right on the platter. But the platter of the CT-01 is quite small. It does look like the force still is too high based on your testing. Kudos on the quick edit and reupload. Hopefully COTURN will be back to comment.

Today I would pay the premium price for this one over the Soundburger if I were in the market for one of them. (I digitize my LPs on the first play. You all might already know this but the wow and flutter can often be made better by simply making sure your record is on the table 100% centered. My point is that the center peg might not be exact, or maybe a bit wobbly, the record center hole might be a bit off.
    So carefully put your needle on the record and watch it, if it go back and forth / side to side you will have more wow, so you have to tap the record on the edge gently until you have no more side to side swing.

    This has been a very welcome video as I'm considering adding a budget record player to my home office (I have a larger audio rig, but no space for it at my HO). The Coturn is definitely more stylish and sophisticated in design than the SB, but can't bring myself to plunk almost 500€ (plus import) for such a thing. As long as my records don't get destroyed anything is ok with me (I'm used to tracking forces of 2.5g or less)... I think I'd rather go find some used thing on eBay. xD

    229 Euros for the Soundburger? Cripes, I should buy some and sell them online. They're selling for NTD$5800 in Taiwan, which is only 179 Euros. I bought my "portable" record player (Numark PT-01 Scratch) for it's compactness and use in a tiny apartment, not to carry around. Those two look good, but somehow don't look as sturdy.

  • @theol1044
    @theol1044 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    What immediately kills this thing for me, disregarding the price, is that straight tonearm without any offset for the cartridge. It's sad to see that the fundamentals of turntable desing seem do get increasingly forgotten (for the looks?). Just look at the AT for comparison.

    • @johni1842
      @johni1842 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you look closely, the cartridge is mounted on a slight angle to the tonearm. So there was some thought and design considered here...

    • @theol1044
      @theol1044 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@johni1842 That's what I had been asking myself, and for that reason I now had another look at the company's home page. It was there that it dawned on me: Not only *is* the cartridge dead-straight on the photos there, this is also an underhung tonearm (effective lenght of the arm shorter than pivot-spindle distance), as can clearly be seen in the video from 10:42. An underhung tonearm is a fundamentally flawed design in itself, and only good for 'turntablism'.

If weight is more the stylus won't be able to more freely so you have to compromise on the higher notes.. As a piece of design it is pretty awesome, and the specs seem surprisingly good. But I am trying to picture a person with this and some records under their arm on their way to... where? it's nice this cheaper player has the ability to swap an AT cart - .. those spring loaded arm players are ancient tech..they work well in most cases but you'll never get the same tracking force from one to another.. it's a bit random due to the nature of the spring they used and the physical nature of it. The spring arms also have a tendency to fly off the record with high amplitude cut recordings - like a disco or hip hop 12". at least in my experience.. i always have to put a penny on the head.

    Isn't the wow and flutter a function of the concentricity of the grooves to the spindle. Most vinyl grooves are not concentric to the center hole and you can see that by watching the tonearm sway back and forth. Would that show up on both those players as an incorrect measurement? Thanks so much for your videos. - John

      Victrola used to "make" (read: get their logo printed on) Crosley clones, have they got something decent out now?

    Still the sound burger seems a much better choice to me. Spring loaded tonearms as already mentioned in the comments is not a good design let alone for a turntable with a minimal platter like these, and also as you demonstrate a very slight difference in height makes a big difference in tracking force so wobbly records will have various pressure values throughout their surface so it is a no for me. Cheers from Greece.

    So adjusting needlepressure is not possible i presume... was thinking of buying one to take with me to elderly people who sold their hifi but not their records just wanted to make them enjoy their own records once again with bluetooth headphones.... so i really would like to spend the E400.... but not wanting to ruin their records with 4.5 gram needle pressure makes me hesitate. Thanks for the review👍

    Do we know that the sound burger that hits retail shelves will be exactly the same as the limited edition? They very well might throw a headphone jack onto it before going into production

    Improved frequency response on the burger. Especially noticeably on the bass end. Could be the difference in the tracking force and tracking angle.

    Since the tone arm is spring loaded, is it possible to access the spring and increase the tension on it, possibly by moving the loop up a bit? that could make it so you can adjust the tracking force yourself. I've seen people do something similar on other spring loaded tone arms

      Some spring loaded tone arms have a tracking adjustment screw that changes the tension on the tone arm spring.

    The speed issue with the Sound Burger may have been due to temperature, the cheaper adjustable pots are sensitive to temperature differences and can move due to changes such as storage in a colder environment or warmer environment.

    So if it's a spring loading issue, doesn't that allow for an easier fix?

    I wonder if you can change the tracking force by altering the spring. Or changing it out?

    Any mention on the quality of the pre-amps on these things? Is there a phono out? or just line? Im asking beause id like to plug these into my mixer and bypass the preamps which are probably not great quality... but just wondering if any of you had any comments on the ones built in.

    While I appreciate the thought in not wanting to spam people, I do wish you would have left the notification on for subscribers! I've been busy lately so the original video was in my watch later, marked as "private video", and I only realized what it was by searching for the video ID and happening upon a cached page somewhere with the title. Then I had to go to the channel and find it there. Had that cached page not existed I never would have realized I missed a techmoan video!

    I didn't hear any sound issues. The Coturn is much nicer looking in my opinion and seems slightly better quality but I'm not sure I'd pay almost double.

    i just bought the sound burger. i wish they had just added a way to adjust volume for the line out and bluetooth directly on the product, but i am gonna get it in this saturday. that being said the coturn is very sleek and more portable than the soundburger, but the price is too premium for me, sick design if it was a better price point i would definetly consider cause both of these are perfect for when you are out and about and digging.
