I was in the Rhodesian Security Forces in an otherwise all African unit. My nickname was apparently "Butsu" from this song. I was told that it was because I slept in the radio room with my boots on. However, when I asked my men about the character of the guy in the song, they said he was a bit of a "nyoka", which was less flattering! Anyway, I have fond memories of this song from Mtoko/Mutoko in 1979.
Tiri ma teenagers ku Chiredzi .Mapfumo would come to town achiridza muChitsanga hall at height of our Liberation struggle,1977,78 and 79. Anyone who remembers mapfumo na Jonah Sithole performing ku Chiredzi ? Happy days.
"Bhutsu mutandarika", or oversized boots, played in 1:52 shangara-style .In Rhodesia, during the days of forced labour, miners were rubber boots, one-size-fits-all.
This must be the original version. Charted Feb 1979 on Radio 2's sales chart for vinyl 7" singles entitled Lyons Maid Hits of the week. Reached No 1 of course.
Indeed does it matter? I never got the meaning (until now when I am told ts meaningless!). In early 1990s, when I got close to 'Butsu' himself at a concert in Harare, he declined to play it staying "It's too old".
Wonderful song from Mukanya. INSPIRED many young boys and girls to take arms and fight the Rhodesian Soldiers.
