Prof Dr Manzoor Hussain Malik, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Al Shifa Eye Hospital, Laser & Glaucoma Centre, Bahawalpur, Pakistan, explains that the eyeball contains a gel-like structure known as a vitreous gel. Sometimes, particularly in high myopia or due to trauma, there is liquefaction of the central part of the gel which leads to the appearance of floaters in front of the eye. Small tiny floaters are very common even without any obvious cause. These types of floaters are benign and harmless and doctors advise the patient to ignore these floaters. If the floaters are larger in size they could be dissolved with YAG laser Vitreolysis. If the floaters are in the form of a shower, suddenly appearing along with light flashes from the eye, then this type is important and this is a sign of impending retinal detachment. The retina of the patient must be examined to find and seal the retinal tear.
