      I have pretty much given up. I have been looking for a welted boot in this style for ~2.5 years now, spending thousands of hours looking. Due to lack of quality options, I don't really consider Frye's boots that bad. The closest option to these are red wing glorias, which are much higher quality, not in my size.

    • @ElizabethDMadison
      @ElizabethDMadison 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I also want some Thursday Captain boots. i used to ride horses and had paddock boots that were much like the captain boots with the laces and the toe cap and small heel and constructed like that too, the leather was good and had some oil in it, everything was very decent and they were the best shoes I ever owned. No zipper. They were also an extremely fair price, a modest price even. If I recall correctly they were made in Romania. But the specific company ("On Course") that sold those a couple decades ago stopped selling them them. Sadly, and bizarrely considering the amount of money in the equestrian market, you would look in vain now for goodyear welted off the shelf made-to-purpose women's English-style paddock boots. The Captain boots are close but there are some things about those that you'd want to be different to be ideal English riding boots, I don't think the knobby soles would be quite right, you'd want the right kind of rubber sole with a somewhat shallow even tread pattern so the sole sits nicely on the stirrup and a notch in the middle of the leather front where they lace up so they can flex when your heel is down in stirrup, and real riding boots sometimes have a functional spur rest on the heel though I am not sure these did. Riding boots also should have a proper shank, probably steel. I am poor and don't ride anymore but I have never stopped keeping my eye out for the same thing as those "on course" traditionally constructed paddock boots. My horse actually had to be put down but i wore those boots for years and years after until eventually they fell apart completely. I didn't know till they fell apart they had nails in them, i had no idea there was such a thing as making boots with traditional hand construction like that but it made me appreciate them even more and why they actually worked so well. I had no idea boots like that could be resoled.

    It's always incredible to me how bad quality a product can be so expensive as long as they are marketing to women. In my experience, it's not that there aren't women who don't know the difference, but that in the US they have basiclaly no quality choices. I ended up getting my wife boots from Austria (Ludwig Reiter) to find a good quality:cost ratio, and that's despite being made with expensive labor in Vienna, and the price really isn't very different.

    • @TheRacerRich
      @TheRacerRich 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Exalta101 Why do you believe that? I saw their workshop just a year and a half ago.
      The USA does have fantastic shoes, but not for women.
      And shipping does not destroy our climate. Spare me your new Vergangenheitsbewaeltigung.
      You can find plenty of quality shoes in Austria - Raz Maftei, Stefan Maftei, Materna, and while not made in Austria Alexandru Maftei will fit you in Vienna. There's always Scheer if you have the money.
      Edit: the only reason I can see you think Ludwig Reiter is no longer made in Austria is that they did move to Suessenbrunn, but they are still nearby and certainly within Austria.

    • @andrewc9790
      @andrewc9790 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      This is the unfortunate reality of the world. I'm sure Frye used to be quality, possibly still have a few models that are good. I've been a Filson fan boy long before hipsters were a thing and now they've basically ruined the brand. It takes some research to know what is actually quality these days, it's still out there but there are more fakes than the real deal.

    • @BarqueCat2
      @BarqueCat2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I assume they use soft wood for the softness. It would have a little more "give" like stacked leather. They probably took the cheaper shortcuts because they expect lighter use for womens' boots. Which is rude.

    • @hanns1401
      @hanns1401 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Last year I tried finding some high quality leather boots like these for my wife. There just aren't a lot of options if you want real leather, welted ladies boots. We didn't end up buying them but I'm still on the lookout in case anyone knows a good alternative.

    • @BarqueCat2
      @BarqueCat2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Wheeler Dealer you're not wrong... but that's not what I meant by "lighter" use. We tend to buy things for fashion use rather than function use. When I need good steel toe or snake boots I buy men's. I need the function and the longevity. I'm not alone in this, but apparently in the minority (and the markup / pink tax is crazy - only to find out they still aren't as well made...)

    Seeing that heel block reminds me of a pair I sent to a local shop for resole that came back with a piece of dyed plastic for a heel block, because they couldn't replace the leather-wrapped plastic block the boots came with and the leather veneer had worn. The uppers were such high quality, but the heels... Mixed quality like that, so frustrating. I miss those boots so much! Learned so much from that.
    So great to see your quality work!

    Thank you for making a video about women's shoes! This is good to know. I appreciate you educating us. I own several pairs of Fryes, and I just noticed that my 7-year-old Harness boots finally need some attention. What better-made brands would you recommend for women instead?

    You made them much better than new! Even now, they are not for wearing in wet conditions, right?
    My mom has similar worn boots, that she does not wear for more than 20 years, but still keep it!
    You actually encouraged me to share this video with one of Kazan, Russia local cobblers to ask to do the same with them!

    Classic example of the "pink tax", women's clothing and shoes tend to be vastly over-priced compared to men's, which is unfair given we are on average paid less. Thank you for fixing these boots, you did a good job.
