    That now sits in the top 3 or 4 TH-cam videos that I know I will revisit time and again. Fascinating to see the logistics and goodness knows how much planning was involved. Above all it was great to see the operating skills on display. Thank you Roly. A pleasure to watch. 73

      Yep getting way down to the Auckland Islands is no mean feat at all.
      The Island is "locked up" now by Dept of Conservation so future Dxpeditions will be near impossible. It has also been designated as a World Heritage site which adds even more complexity..... cheers

      It is quite amazing how you can quickly get into the groove so to speak.
      The strange thing is that Ron would be on one side of the room on CW on a band and i would be on the other also on CW and you soon realise you are both at the same speed ....... Weird but it happened over and over... cheers

    I was just browsing the outer islands of New Zealand on google earth looking for places i'd never seen and came across the Auckland Islands, curious to know more I checked TH-cam and here I am having paused the video to comment. Interestingly enough, My late father was an amateur radio enthusiast and had a ZL2 callsign. Thankyou for this documentary, it's great viewing during this covid lockdown. Cheers! :)

    What a great video Roly. Ron sure had a great fist. He sure made that chrome Bencher sing. I thought for sure the mast was going to snap and you were going to have a pile of scrap aluminum ( as you say aluminium) on the ground. I can't believe you guys haled up 3 beams like that. Ron looks like he's working CW in some sort of Zen-like heightened state of mind.Did he ever get frustrated with people calling at much slower wpm speeds? Thanks for the video Roly. Please keep them coming if it's not too much trouble.

    • @ZL1BQDRoly
      @ZL1BQDRoly  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Martin, The frustrations don't come with slower wpm operators, that is par for the course and well accepted. The frustrations come from those who have very BIG signals but they are not hearing you. So you go back to this very strong signal and end up having to send his report several times until he copies it correctly... grrrr

      @@martinvanek5951 Thank you Martin. It is a subtle reminder really that high power is not always the answer. You will notice that when i answered the QRP station he was in the clear. I bet he studied my pattern and knew where i was going to be listening next :)

    Enjoyed seeing the logistics behind this dexpedition, the operation of the radios, and the operators doing their thing. I have just started learning Morse and was not able copy any of Ron’s transmissions. How many wpm was he doing, and what was his top speed?
    I remember you saying he could carry on several qso’s at the same time. I’ve down loaded this one and will try to copy him after mastering Morse code. Thanks!
