Tbh I don't like Claude people simping on him because of his looks but let's not forget he killed lp athy even if it was another life he is still the same person the only difference was that athy took action in this life while in her previous life she just waited for her father's love that will never come
Don't forget about Claude's curse, which caused him physical pain next to her: the emperor is cruel by himself, and naturally he has radical solutions to problems - only years later he took the opportunity in the form of poisoning Jennet to get rid of the problem. And so yes, the current Athanasia was saved because she started acting earlier. Afanasia's past is also partly to blame for her simply terrible life (but we don't touch the survival rate, because she was most likely killed anyway): she did not try to change her position in any way and sought to get love from a stranger with common blood, seeing for the first time only at the age of nine and never talking normally - and she already had a loving woman, Lily! But okay, she's our main character, so she's just a victim.
They are both idiots to varying degrees (both have disgusting biographies that made them so), but yes, the main and most of the blame lies with Claude.
