Goodbye Horses - Q Lazzarus

- This is the original cover sleeve of the 'Goodbye Horses' single, so people can see that it is a woman singing. The picture is of Q Lazzarus. I too, initially thought it was a man singing, but knowing that it is not, does not detract from the fact that the song is amazing and powerful. The song lyrics and composition by William Garvey (who died in 2009) and sung by Q Lazzarus.
Actual lyrics are :-
GOODBYE HORSES
He told me, "I've seen it rise,
But, it always falls.
I've seen 'em come, I've seen 'em go."
He said, "All things pass into the night."
And I said, "Oh no sir, I must say you're wrong,
I must disagree, Oh no sir, I must say you're wrong,
Won't you listen to me?"
He told me, "I've seen it all before,
I've been there, I've seen my hopes and dreams
lying on the ground.
I've seen the sky, just begin to fall."
He said, "All things pass into the night"
And I said, "Oh no sir, I must say you're wrong,
I must disagree, Oh no sir, I must say you're wrong,
Won't you listen to me."
Goodbye horses, I'm flying over you.
Goodbye horses, I'm flying over you.
---You can check this, by going to William Garvey's website. www.garveymusic...
It's a woman singing about a man (sung in past tense), and what he's telling her is all very negative, to which she disagrees. It's pretty simplistic in it's verses. The 'Goodbye Horses' lyric is clearly a metaphor. There are no horses in the song.
Basically, it's the mind we're talking about here. 'Goodbye Horses' is saying goodbye to the mind. So it could just be Death on the whole. I believe Garvey intended the song to be quite uplifting, however, he didn't have control over Q Lazzarus' voice. But as with any song, it's all down to interpretation (well, unless the singer says otherwise and screws that up)
A lot of people say 'Goodbye Horses' is about drugs, namely, cocaine. But there isn't really any indication to that. On the flipside to the 'Goodbye Horses' vinyl, is a song called 'White Lines', which could easily be misconstrued as being about cocaine, but the lyric within the song goes 'White lines over the ocean'. But even if the song is a reference to cocaine, it does not mean that 'Goodbye Horses' is.
'Goodbye Horses' was not written for the movie 'The Silence Of The Lambs (1991 Jonathan Demme)'. The song was written and released in 1988, a month after the book (by Thomas Harris) was released. The song appeared in 'Married To The Mob' (another Demme movie) which was released in theatres across America a month after the books release, thus making it impossible.
Unfortunately Q Lazzarus only made a few songs and they are very hard to come by:-
'The Candle Goes Away', which featured in the 1986 movie 'Something Wild' staring Melanie Griffith, i believe (another Demme movie) .
'White Lines' which appeared on the flipside to the 'Goodbye Horses' vinyl.
'Heaven' (a cover of 'The Talking Heads') which appeared in the film 'Philadelphia' (yet another Demme movie), which you can see a clip of (on TH-cam) under the title.. 'Soul Song In The End Of The Party', you even see Q herself, seemingly wearing the same jacket as on the Goodbye Horses cover sleeve, and wearing a hat. Unfortunately the song seems to be an in-movie song, and thus not a proper recording.
Also, Q Lazzarus wrote and composed music, alongside Danny Z, for a movie named 'Twisted' by director Seth Michael Donsky released in 1996. I read a review of the film by someone, who said 'that the movie should of just been a 2 hour MTV music video, which could mean (not certain) that Q lazzarus sings some other songs...here's hoping.

When I was diagnosed with cancer, I was listening to this on the car ride back home, I played it on a loop, and somehow, it let me know everything was gonna be fine... now hopefully I'm finishing treatment in a month, and I'm closer to remission.
A little update (11/11/2021): finally finished chemo a week ago, there were some hurdles like some covid scares along the way, but for what it's worth, I only have my PET scan left in December, but the docs are really optimistic I defeated this on the first run.
I'm overwhelmed with all your well wishes, motivational comments, and prayers. Thank you guys from all my heart. I knew I could find kindred spirits from this song.
Big update (23/03/2022): had a bit of a bump after that PET Scan, it was found my lymphoma grew a little bit, and had to go into further treatment. I went to have Immunotherapy, and now, at last, my latest PET Scan showed a "Complete Response to Treatment", and now I'm going to have a Stem Cell Transplant.
In between these two scans, I got married and finally, I'm living with my girl. While it was quite complicated at last I see the light at the end of the tunnel, just one more round of treatment to consolidate this, and I'm done.
I'm still in awe of all of your good wishes, and how we all are enduring some fights of our own.
All the best to you!
Best of luck! You'r gonna kick cancer's ass you'll see.
Sending love
Wishing you health and happiness 💞

Ooh it touches it and it feels it😂
its all a out making jellied meat its called Holodets im russia
Ha! Do you know what pain is ?
I never knew the chorus was about the Hindu text Bhagavad Gita. In it, the five horses that pull Krishna and Pandava prince Arjuna's chariot, are symbols of the five senses. These five senses keep us tied to the physical/material plane of existence. When you can transcend the limitations of these senses and achieve a higher level of consciousness, you are leaving the "horses" behind - "flying over them." The song is about someone who was so affected by (A loss? A breakup?) they decide to give up the things that keep them tied to this world by emotion.
It makes sense why it was used in Silence of the Lambs. Bill wasn't a transgender person, as explained by Lecter. Instead, he didn't feel right in his skin and he wanted to transcend it in the most psychopathic way possible. Imposter syndrome and disphoria over oneself are as common to humanity as creating and imagining. It's that imagination that tells us there's always something more.
It truly is a beautiful song that'll sadly be a joke to most.
Beautifully put. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

@@dennismartin5821 i just asked my mom (idk why I didn't think to. i guess because it was random of a memory and question to ask). but, she said he did get it from the silence of the lambs. but the playing it at thanksgiving was because he never changed his routine and loved the song.

Diane Luckey worked as a bus driver in Staten Island. She unfortunately passed away back in mid 2022.
She simply liked making music, and disliked the idea of being in the limelight so never chased fame. May she rest in peace.
fr
I'm sorry but I need you to know that what you wrote is just not correct. Diane graduated from high school in 1978 and spent the early 80's working as an au pair and live in housekeeper for a wealthy man in Chelsea in NYC. She and her group, Q Lazzarus & the Resurrection, used the tape cassette recording equipment in her employer's home to record songs that became their first album. By the mid 80's she was driving a taxi and kept her album close at hand in case she picked up anyone in the music business. In 1985 she picked up filmmaker Jonathan Demme during a blizzard and asked him if he worked in the music or entertainment industry. She played him the album and his response was, "Oh my God, what is this and who are you?" It was his interest in her music that brought it to the world, as it was used for the end credits of My Cousin Vinny, and THEN he pulled it out again as the showstopper song in his film Silence of the Lambs. She and the group did record a few more songs but after the success of their music appearing in highly acclaimed and succesful films the attention on the group faded as their style wasn't really what the public was into and used to at the time and no other filmmakers appreciated their work the way Jonathan Demm did. Record companies still did not like Diane's less than traditionally feminine appearance and by the mid 90's she and her other group members faded from the public view. She needed to be able to eat and keep herself. The royalties from "Goodbye Horses" certainly helped her originally but as time passed she understood she would need a real job out here to survive and I respect her for that. There's nothing wrong with that. But best believe she tried her best to make it out here, she wasn't rich but she made it okay on her own. I respect her to the fullest.
So full that's yum
She's dead asshole.

They finally found out Q- Lazzarus is still alive last year after a couple of decades of falling off the face of the Earth. Turns out she was hiding in plain sight. She is a bus driver in NYC.
Really?
@@FIRSTNAMELASTNAME-zt4kf yea, I saw it yesterday when I was on Reddit. If you Google it, the article should come up.
No fucking way! Imagine being the last rider in the bus with her RIP haha.
I've read that article was fake. Something bout a journo payin a woman to say she was her in order to get himself a job. I hope that's not true though.

This depresses me, but at least she's still alive.
That is sad. She has a great voice. I'm sure she could write an album based on the shit she's seen being a driver.
wait what? I thought she disappeared
She should do it as "Goodbye Buses" then quit.
@@riverbord5353 Bus driving in Staten Island. Sounds pretty disappeared to me.
Most of the concern arose because she didn't claim her royalties.
I live on si and I hope to see her and let her known she still brightens people’s day

Welcome to the future...where everyone just wants to live in the past.
It's not a question of wanting to. We are stuck in a loop.
Wow... This comment hits me hard!
There is no future. So I try to build a new past. The one I know. The one I could have had. The best I remember, the worst I can not get passed. One I live. One I can be in now. One that can not be done. One thats built to last. One where I am one with the one I am one with now. One where horses can always run free. Me. Now.
Too true.

why people crying that this song got ruined bc of silence of the lambs lol the song is bad ass and the movie is badass . it's an honor for both parties to be in the same platform
the song wouldn't even be as popular as it is had that film not had it in it. the lead singer met the director while driving a cab in new york and played the song to him, he decided to try and help them out as much as he could by using their songs. I'd say near to no one knew them before that movie.

I've seen It all before I've been there, seen my hopes and dreams lying on the ground - good bye 🐎🐎🐎🐎
The way it's delivered is pretty masterful as well. It's delivered with almost this anger or deep sorrow at having to see that, which is what it actually feels like. It's delivered in the way I've heard someone say something they could barely get out, something you can barely say. I almost feel like the person is looking down at their hopes and dreams when they say this line.
"I MUST DISAGREE OH NO SIR I MUST SAY YOU'RE WRONG...OH WONT YOU LISTEN TO ME?"
yeah it sure is powerfull lyrics
A great song to just tuck it back along to and enjoy

RIP Q your legacy in music will continue through your song "Goodbye Horses". Still today is the best goth song I have ever heard. 😔
I thought it was a guy singing
I suppose it is gothic in a way given how it was used in SOTL, never heard this song classified as goth though
interesting! i never thought it of a goth song. Horses depict our most emotional senses, survival, fight or flight type emotions, so to say goodbye horses it is to say goodbye to our own emotions, or to question them as is goth music.

@@johnmatthew7991 Thank you for sharing. I tried to look into her a while back because she really interested me as a person, but there is hardly and info about her. From what I've gathered (but I could be totally wrong) she was a taxi driver, got discovered, had this one CD, it wasn't a success back then and then she basically disappeared. @@thealien2863She passed two years ago…Diane Luckey.
I found this song at a point in my life when I needed it most. I felt like I was so stuck in my life, like I needed some drastic change. I was working retail in the summer and I closed most nights by myself since the shop was rather small. i the store was right next to a freight train line and you could feel the whole shop rattle as the trains passed. i'd often see people walk the rails and I often dreamed of doing it but the idea mortified me. the freight trains were huge, but honestly only passed a few times a day, the lines were old and not used much to my knowledge, there was even rumor of some people living alongside them. I remember closing one night and it had just been a sh*tty day. I pulled up my music on my phone to listen to something as I left the shop, and stumbled across this song. I don't know if it was the song or how bad my day had been, but hearing it in that moment motivated me. I walked the rails for the first time that night (my eyes darting nervously over my shoulder the whole time in fear of getting squashed). after a while I warmed up to it, hopping on the planks that sat between the metal rails. I danced down them for a while until I got slightly lost and had to retrace my steps in the dark. I got home so late but it didn't matter. this song was on loop the whole time, and I still dance to it when I need it. I don't walk those rails anymore but that memory of leaping up onto them full of worry to be soothed by this song will forever be embedded in me.
You don't know how much I love this story.
That really made me smile
Oh man, thank you for sharing this. I can identify myself with your story. I am stuck as well. I just daydream every day what I could have been instead of what I am. I really can't find myself outside of the commodity of not being there at all. I don't know what real pleasure feels like, I have never felt the touch of a woman. I have never felt beautiful. I have never done anything outstanding, I have never felt self-realization. I have never felt useful.
The other day, when I I finished work at night, with my shift meal on hand, a girl asked for my contact. My snapchat, to be more specific. The first time in the two miserable decades of my life that a girl has ever shown interest in me directly. Her friend actually helped her, asking for it on her behalf while they were side by side like two policemen asking for my ID. This is something I've dreamed of my whole life, but the way I replied will be the only time I have felt freedom in my life. You can only imagine what I said, but imagine what I could have said. To summarize, it ended with her friend insulting me while I was walking away and with me crying back with a subtle "I wanna die." How is it possible that the moment where I've felt more alive was making another person feel bad for doing something I desired? I don't even have snapchat.
So yeah, just like after a bad day, you had the guts to walk magically across the rails, vibing to a beautiful song, to make you feel alive, I portrayed my miserable existence on another person as a revenge to life, to all the other humans who never showed interest in me, and I bet what you did felt as great as what I did.
Hopelessness makes us wild, I guess. The minor change to a life full of nothing makes us feel powerful. Some people have everything handed to them. Some can't even enjoy the invisible pleasure of just being alive. Life is, again, a giant mystery.
Same. This song just became the saddest/best song ever to me. I'll never forget a certain person when I hear it...
Thanks for sharing
You told me, I've seen it rise
But it always falls
I've see him come, I've seen him go
He said, "All things pass into the night"
And I said, "Oh no sir, I must say you're wrong
I must disagree, oh no sir, I must say you're wrong
Won't you listen to me?"
You told me, "I've seen it all before
I've been there, I've seen my hopes and dreams
A-lying on the ground
I've seen the sky just begin to fall"
He said, "All things pass into the night"
And I said, "Oh no sir, I must say you're wrong
I must disagree, oh no sir, I must say you're wrong
Won't you listen to me?"
Goodbye horses, I'm flying over you
Goodbye horses, I'm flying over you
Goodbye horses, I'm flying over you
Goodbye horses, I'm flying, flying, flying over you
It's about an awakening. An awakening to the short-term nature of life. Even as we exist, we lose things - from the things and people that are in our lives to even parts of ourselves. So while we might want to believe they'll last forever, they don't - they pass into the night (they fade away). Imagine the amazing, glorious, powerful lives we've never even seen or heard of - as well as those who we have that are now gone - and won't come back. It's not a joyful awakening - which is why the narrator in the song says "Oh no, sir. I must say you're wrong. Won't you listen to me?" because the narrator doesn't want to accept it at first.
First heard this in Skate 3 of all places and every once in a while I reload my old save file to jam out for hours on end. RIP in peace Q, you left a mark in the music industry and I will forever blast this masterpiece in your honor
