The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) is tasked with combating and preventing wildfires, rather than the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). Mayor Bass does not control CAL FIRE. Last year, CAL FIRE's budget substantially increased by $1 billion, bringing its total funding to $4 billion. As for the LAFD, Mayor Bass approved a $17 million cut to the LAFD budget, amounting to a 2% reduction, affecting overtime pay and unfilled administrative positions within the department. It appears Mayor Bass called out the LAFD on a tricky accounting move to snag extra overtime pay. She stated: "This budget serves as a reset, in part by continuing to hire for critical positions including police officers and firefighters while eliminating some of the department's vacant positions, thereby prioritizing our City family over empty desks." The final approved 2024-2025 budget for the LAFD includes a $50 million increase for salaries and equipment.
In reference to the slave labour of the prison population being used to combat fires, the crazy thing is that once those inmates leave prison they actually CAN'T become proper firefighters, because that would involve paying them much more than if they were a prison inmate, and makes it more likely that they won't become employed, end up homeless and have a higher incarceration rate, meaning they'll likely end up back in prison and the cycle of cheap slave labour continues. This is one of the reasons why the rhetoric being pushed around recently that these fires are to be wholly blamed on the homeless population is disgusting.
