- This week we interview a local to get tips for those planning a journey to Alaska (including the Dempster Highway). We also explore Anchorage and back track to Talkeetna for a memorable glacier landing and flyby of Denali.

Great interview and advice from a local in Alaska. Many thanks to Ken & Lori who helped you and provided us all with more knowledge about the state of Alaska then a guide book would ever give us.
Great video, I have know Ken since 1985, great guy. Glad you were able to do the landing on the glacier. When Ken and I went we weren't so lucky. Bad weather. But we did have a nice flight.
Lots of great info from Ken.
Excellent video. A lot if good information. Thank you.
Super fantastic - loader with valuable HOW TO's, Warnings, and timely tips = Thank you for sharing.
This is one of your best videos. It assembles priceless information in one spot. Well done!!!
Great video with lots of good info. Thanks for sharing your Alaska experience with all of us.
Epic! A truly blessed experience of a lifetime. Thank you for sharing it with us all.
Love all the great information in this video! I will take advantage of most of the information!
Great interview and information. Love all the footage from the plane at the end. Gorgeous view!
Thank you for sharing your trip - love all the pictures and video's you've shared, everything is so beautiful and a lot of great tips. It's definitely made me want to plan a trip! Please don't forget that many of us watch your video's because we're fascinated with RV life. Including little snippets of how you live in your RV as part of every video would be much appreciated (examples - finding spots to camp, keeping bugs out, eating, wifi, cooking, etc. I know this is probably boring to you but very valuable to those of looking to get into an RV lifestyle!! A lot of the camper van channels lately are doing the Canada/Alaska trip this summer and almost all of them have focused on scenery and places with very little about living in their van's on the road! Again thanks for sharing your once in a life time visit and all the hard work you put into these video's!
Thanks for the good suggestions.
👍 I really enjoyed your interview and the weather!!!! thanks again
Investigation reporter digging out the good information! Another great video, thanks for sharing.
Excellent interview and awesome pics.
Lotsa good info. Very informative ! @11:28 "We haven't seen the 'no-see-ums.'" Ha ha !
We are planning to drive to Arctic Circle sign and camp at the camp site, (from Fairbanks), was having second thoughts reading about the Dalton(?) Hwy conditions.
We considered doing the Dalton until reading about all the trucks.
Well this is about one of the best I've seen on Alaska. Kudos to you!
This is a great video. I just shared it with my RV group. I live in Alaska and Ken (I think I might know him!) is spot on. I used to work in one of the state visitor centers so I know the questions and concerns folks have, and this addresses many of them. Thanks!
The visitor centers have been great. Canada has great WiFi at their facilities. I wish Alaska offered WiFi. We would gladly pay for it.
@@FromShetoMe Me too! Unfortunately, most of the visitor centers are run by local towns or area chamber of commerce offices, and don't have the funds. However, most towns have an alternative. I live in Delta Junction, and there is free wifi at the library which you can access from the parking lot. We used to send all the travelers there ;)
The woman who was staffing Delta Junction was quite helpful and she let us use their WiFi but said it was very slow.
@@FromShetoMe I'm glad at least she let you know. Yes, it can be slow here, and in many places. Part of the Alaska Experience I suppose! I know many vloggers have had difficulty uploading. It's a state-wide issue unfortunately. Glad at least they let you know
Very informative video! We have returned from Alaska after 38 days there in our 2018 Ascent. Not sure where you are currently on your journey but two things I would highly recommend are Halibut Cove out of Homer and dinner at the Saltry Restaurant (at Halibut Cove) and secondly driving to McCarthy/Kennecott and hiking to the Root Glacier there. Also we took the Cassier Highway back and stopped in Hyder Alaska and drove the 23 miles to see the Salmon Glacier. Awesome view. Have fun! So beautiful around every corner.
Thanks. We did Kennecott and loved it. Because of ferry strike we will be driving back now and check out your suggestion.
Hi Debbie! Great stuff!! Thank you Kevin too, i did flat top mnt. Didnt make it to the tippy top but saw some incredible scenery . Love all these tips! That motorcycle ride looked crazy!! 😆
Debbie such an enjoyable chat with Ken. Generous guy sharing tips for travel to his state. Would love to have heard how he came to be a resident of Alaska and his line of work. Tks for sharing,
Aurora Nite , first off, it was a wonderful visit with Debbie and John. It was really neat to meet them after watching their videos for so long.
I was a widower. I met my wife on e-harmony. I got a job in Alaska to be near her friends and family. It’s been a real adventure! I love Alaska, my job and my wife, I’m a blessed man.
Glad you are checking these comments Ken because we are back to no connectivity except where we can find WiFi.
Very informative. Headed there on Friday. I'm sure this video has given me lots of insights that will be useful. Thank you!
We’ve been to Moose Tooth pizza several times on our trips to Alaska. It’s awesome!!
Wow great video and tips. The airplane views were spectacular- I’m awestruck
Thanks for the update and Ken was a good source for local information. We lost two truck tires on the Dalton/Haul road and another one had a cut valve stem on our way to Valdez. Having the tires replace to the BFG KO2's and going to Leighbridge this Sep to have he Lexor lifted for next years trip. The friends coming with me want to got to Tuk from Whitehorse and after seeing Ken's video it is not going to happen. Glad for the info on K2 in Talkeetna as it is in our plans. Travel safe!
Add Kennecott/McCarthy to your agenda. Favorite thing we’ve done.
@@FromShetoMe Tried it in 2007 and the road was in pretty bad shape, only made it about 5 miles in a Chevy Avalanche with aggressive tires. Beat us up a lot that day.
Road has been improved. You could drive to Chitina and fly in. Just sayin’. Especially if you are improving suspension.
@@FromShetoMe Sounds good on the road and stopping around there (Glenallen, Copper Center, Kenny Lake, or Chitina) for two days so we can got to Kennecott/McCarthy. Have been emailing the uplifter in Lethbridge today and we are finalizing things for my visit this summer. Did I send you my 2007 Alaska Blog? Can't remember if i did.
Having had the ferry strike, reminds me of our HAWAII trip in 1972, PAFACIC. dock strike, even paper goods flown in , then a SCUBA trip to BAHAMAS, airline strike So I USED MY AMEX CARD FOR 15 TICKETS ,,as we ALL Zhad to work MONDAY, 1988 Stay well &Safe Cheers From NJ🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
We were in Scotland in 2008 for our son's wedding and there was a strike that curtailed petrol deliveries. We were afraid we might not get to the wedding. It was an expensive taxi ride for sure. But those are the things we remember about our adventuring.
Beautiful, you would make an excellent travel Commentator
Thank you, really enjoying your trip. We have a crack in our front window (very near the drivers eye line) and the cost to fix is $1400-$1500 Canadian including recalibration. We are taking our RV back to Kelowna as we are due for our first servicing by Mercedes and get our awning fixed. We are leaving August 23rd or 24th. Not sure when you might be coming through Terrace. If we are not here, I will let my staff know that you are welcome to use my office and Wifi. Cheers! Safe journeys continued.
Hi Anna. Glad you left a comment because I was looking for your previous one. Because of the ferry strike we will not be coming through Terrace (bummer). We will be driving down the Cassiar and the detour would add 200 miles to our trip. I was so looking forward to meeting you and punking off your WiFi. Maybe you’ll get down our way some time and we can return the offer.
That price for your windshield sounds awfully high. We got another ding today just before Whitehorse. Hope you have insurance.
Thanks again. Debbie
From She to Me the Cassiar is lovely. Cute campsite just after Dease Lake run by the Kinsman. $10 no services but right along the river. We are an hour west from Kitwanga, where you come out of the Cassiar. You are welcome to come here or maybe we could meet you depending on when you are coming this way. There is a funky restaurant called “37 Grille”, good food. If there is anything we can help with let me know. 250-641-1725 or work 250-635-4428 (Misty River Books).
Thanks for the tip and an hour isn’t too far. I’ll keep you posted on our progress.
Great video - kudos to you.
Thanks D&J for a really fun and informative video ... nice new friends! Hugs, bro!
I came across your video's intrigued with Alaska. I felt like I knew you or your voice. Did u and john attend Albuquerques balloon festival Oct. 5 and or 6th 2018. I spoke with a lady and husband from California on the ridge in front of the Sandia casino looking down on the town I feel like it was you. We were from NC john had a camera on a tri pod if so what a small world ...Moab forever greetings from NC
We did attend but not sure if that was us as I didn’t take a tripod on that trip. Nice meeting you even if just via TH-cam.
Cabela's in Anchorage is now posted no overnight camping and there is a sign that says you will be towed.
Thanks for the update.
You have to go in and ask.
I wonder if I’d be we advised to install “super singles” on the rear of a 4x4 dually van? Also, don’t believe the myth that noseeums vanish after frost. I had them swarming under the bill of my cap, when I was moose hunting in 15° and snow.
I highly recommend the K2 glacier flight! If you get a chance, ride shotgun with the pilot like I did. It is the most "National Geographic" experience you can have to fly between peaks. I did it in 2014 and I plan to do it again in 2021.
I hope you'll come back for our next video (Feb 11) which is about Alaska. I collaborated with another TH-camr. Would love to have your recommendations in the comments of both our videos.
@@FromShetoMe I'm coming up for summer 2021 to work as a tour guide out of Anchorage. I'm in the process of doing a lot of studying because I plan to drive up from Arizona this coming May.
Wow! Alaska is incredibly beautiful, isn't it? I visited the area around Tok once and loved it. Great interview!
nice movie again
So cool! I’m going to Alaska the summer of 2021 in my pleasure way plateau XLTS! Have you seen many places for dogs?
Oh yes, It is only National Parks that have more restrictions. But be aware there are generally no leash laws up here.
@16:50......Lugs: True story; didn't think it was possible, but......Decades ago, I'm in college, driving a VW bug on I-5. At 02:30am. I noticed a slight shimmy, a violent lurch to the left, and flames in my left rear mirror. And my left rear wheel passing me, skimming along the barrier. My wheel had come off the axle, the engine and tranny + suspension had bottomed out on the road surface, and the friction ignited the whole mess.
EVERYONE says that's impossible...that the threads are reversed, self locking/tightening, etc.- BUT.....it happened!! VW= totalled. Folks....as with everything else, CHECK the 101's.
Yes, John has twice seen tires come off a vehicle bouncing on the freeway. Glad you weren't hurt.
Great video as usual. We just got our ascent. We built the overhead storage shelf and we love the extra shelf. I’m moving in to the outdoor shower. The curtain in your first video was only 70” which is too small for me. Did you end up making it larger? Thanks!
I will probably make changes when we get back.
great video need this info for our trip up next year thanks for sharing safe travels take care oh also how much was the flight over Denali thanks
I think it was $295 per person. A bit pricey IMO.
Hi Debbie and John....Very Good VIDEO!!...Complete with Lots of Good Information ...Tips... and WARNINGS!! LOL HEAT!! No way Up in ALASKA TOOO!!?? ..Wowww!! LOCALS-- YEAP! Nothing like a Good Chat with the Good Town Folks Did you say "WASILA"!!....Oooohhh they are Sarah Palin's neighbors(Any good recent news! LOL) . Thank-You Ken and Lorie You were a Life saver to them. If I'm ever there Ken , I will take you some Provisions. LOL God Bless You That Dempster Road is AMAZINGLY Ugly and Dangerous for people who don't know better. Tell Me something... Have you Seeing Any Van Dwellers in Cargo Van's Up there? Can you talk a little bit about the Type of Campers or Road Travelers that you are seeing All the way Up there? What types of Vehicles are they Diving? What Kind of Tires do they have installed on their Cars to drive those roads? Thank-You So Much for Sharing. Also the Type of Autos allowed in the Camp Sites.(is it Only for RV's) what if it's a Cargo Van?
Debbie Did You See RUSSIA From the Top of the World?? Haaa-Haaa-haaaa Stay Safe... TFS Thank-You Thank-U!!
You see absolutely every type of vehicle up here and all are welcome. Only issue is some campgrounds are just not suited for 5th wheels and Class A. But there are plenty of private RV parks for them. And in Alaska you can sleep in your vehicle if it is 10 feet off the highway and signs don’t say otherwise. You see lots of tent campers up here, far more than in the lower 48.
Thank_u
Thank-U
I think you missed your calling you could be a talk show hostess!
Thanks. Problem is I don’t suffer fools well.
What size tires do you have?
LT265/75R16 Bridgestone All terrain KO2 and it requires spacers on the rim.
Can anyone please let me know the place mentioned at 23:30? I've re-listened a few times and I can't work it out
McCathy/Kennecott. It’s awesome if you can handle the long dirt road.
Oops, McCarthy.
@@FromShetoMe thanks so much 🙂
That ice is gonna melt someday and Texas is a gonna be the biggest state ag'in I tell you what! :-D
you, sir are a moron.
