    At 7:47, the reason for the disc at the center is to prevent the ring from punching through the rubber as easily. This is a common failure mode in concrete construction where you have a slab supported by a column. You need to locally strengthen the slab at the column to distribute the load and prevent punching shear. Same thing is happening here.

    • @ALCV11
      @ALCV11 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This question that comes up all the time whenever talking about these plates: "Any sign of the center ring coming out?" So I can see why there is a center core. It's a little disappointing for me since I love the idea of them being recycled, but I still love mine and they are a real attention grabber.

    I checked Nike's website, and I think the reason they sell them in pairs, is that the 'grind' they use for the external part, changes from batch to batch (or season to season). So I think this prevents people from ending up with 2 totally different coloured plates.

    I’d call this plate more “Greenwashing” if the interior part of the plate shown, which far outweighs the recycled external portion, is not made from recycled materials. The website is vague about the sourcing of the internal materials. Still love my Hi Temps of which all the rubber is from recycled tires! Buy once, cry once with Hi Temps.

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      If the idea is recycling what they have it makes sense, the material Nike has on hands for shoes isn't going to work great for the interior of a bumper. They could source recycled material from elsewhere but there's availability and quality concerns there.

    • @thomasbrown7328
      @thomasbrown7328 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +29

      @@DrewLSsix it just seems a bit deceptive on Nike’s part. They’re putting too much emphasis on the reuse of materials when it looks like from Coop’s cutout in the video at most 25% is from recycled materials. The rest of the sourcing is swept under the proverbial rug. Hey, it’s better than not re-using anything but at least be open about the rest of the product.

      Visually looks like hardly anything in the cut section but but volume wise the recycled material makes up nearly 50% of the rubber if you assume a 15mm recycled layer thickness for a 45lb plate. Smaller plates likely higher percentage as plate thickness decreases.

    Dick's sporting goods sell them and you can save on shipping costs if picked up locally. I just checked and at the time of posting this I found a store within 25 miles that had two pairs of 45s... There is a much closer store by me that doesn't carry them so availability varies from store to store.

    I was waiting to see you are actually going to drop them from overhead loaded on barbell. How much to they bounce? Are they quieter due to the softer outer layer? What is the thickness of the 45lb plate? These could potentially be redeeming qualities of these things. In your older videos you always touched on these points when reviewing bumpers.

  • @wilsonram39
    @wilsonram39 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +38

    If younwanna test the yellowing over time, you've now got a pizza weight-plate that can yellow without issues.
    Test one part of it left outside as is, and you can use a UV Blocking clear coat sprayed on the other and see what difference it makes compared to your control group (the 2 other bumpers you have.)
    Is a clear coat spray the most ideal thing? No, but if someone is already spending $60-$200 more on these than the competition, just because they look cool, then they may be interested in whatever it takes to keep them from yellowing.

    Just a heads up for those looking at comparing prices. You can get around the massive shipping costs by purchasing from Dicks sporting goods. Straight from Nike, I was looking at $150 additional shipping. When ordered on Dicks a pair of 45/15/10 plates came out to $388. Pretty much on par (certainly cheaper than rogue’s equivalent) with the rest of the industry.
    These definitely look a hell of a lot better on the rack than anything else on the market.

    Overpriced. If you want a comparable plate, go with the Rogue and save $. If you want to pay more for quality, for just $40 more you can get the Fringe color 45s with a higher durometer rating, and hubs with anchors (which helps stabilize the most common point of failure). The Nikes appear to have the standard hub that you’ll find in any crumb bumper. I just don’t see the argument for these (other than paying to get the swoosh).

Years ago when I worked at a Nike store, we’d often have “mismate” shoes (shoes that we couldn’t find a matching side for to create a pair) that sat around for too long and we’d have to destroy them and toss them in the trash. Hurt to see a pair of $150 running shoes get sliced in half and throw into the garbage just because we couldn’t find the other side.

    Gluck’s Gym did this already, but so much better. No one cares about Nike getting into the home gym equipment industry. They aren’t going to innovate anything, they just don’t like the fact that their affiliated athletes are regularly photographed using non-Nike equipment.
    Given their scale they should be able to crush every other firm on pricing, but they have decided to be premium. Given that their stock price has been plummeting recently, I give this 6-12 months before they pull out of the market to focus on their core business.

    It is pretty obvious that they weren't going to be fully shoe rubber, because running shoe rubber/foam has two main criteria: springiness and *low weight*
    If you made these from Nike Vaporfly's you'd probably get a two foot wide 45 plate.
    Not surprising they have good control on the weight either. When it comes to running shoes, people will complain if a size 9 is five grams off the listed weight.
    A few grams extra to lift per step adds up if you're running a marathon.

    i was kinda excited for these because i thought "oh its just excess rubber scrap that is being repurposed and they are branding it as them doing something altruistic, surely these will be a cheaper option"
    nope lmao $110 for a 45lb plate, anywhere from 30% to over 100% more than other leading brands. for their scraps.

    I have some cheap bumper plates that cost around $2us per kg, I've noticed they chip easily on concrete. I have rubber matting now and a smith machine, so this shouldn't be an issue now. In the future, i may upgrade, but I'm relatively new to weight training, and investing in it is a gradual process. Here's my investment progress: 1. Used standard weights and very cheap fixed bench from Amazon. 2. Three months later and not all at once added hex dumbells and a few bumper plates. 4 rubber mats, a curl and olympic bar. 3. Upgraded bench to incline. 4. Approx 9 months after beginning training added a Force Usa G3 smith machine. Plus another 150kg of force usa steel plates, on special at 70c per kg.

    Just in general, who decided on the 45lbs plate standard? Wouldn't it make more sense for a 50lbs plate standard? along with a 30lbs and 10lbs? With 50 lbs bars? That would make the math so much simpler.
