I was assigned this book for school when I was 12 years old, to be read over the summer between 6th and 7th grade here in the U.S. I was way too young for it, and struggled a LOT, because up to that point, I had only been reading children’s books. My mother had to hire a tutor to help me and I still never finished it. I started my 7th grade English class already behind.
I’ve been carrying around this “trauma” ever since (I’m now 56), and I plan to give it another try now as an adult. I am also about to finish my bachelor’s degree in English (concentration in Literature), so it seems appropriate. Your enthusiasm for the book is infectious!

I’ve read it twice; in 2014 and 2020. We need a loyal miniseries adaptation!

I picked up my copy of the book from the bookstore today. It’s even longer in the German translation. It’s 1,500 pages (we obviously have long words lol).

I have ordered this book and plan to read it. About 12 years ago I saw the French movie of "The Count of Monte Cristo," starring Gerard Dépardieu. It was the best version of the movie I watched and was in my opinion better than the others by far, though I could follow only by reading the English subtitles. The excellence of that film alone made me interested in reading the book. Now I am finally getting around to it.

I'm currently reading Monte Cristo and I'm only on page 462 and although this part is the slow one it's still written fantastically. It's really funny and entertaining. 😅

fun fact: the drugs scene was inspired by his own experience with drugs! drugs were huge in france in the xix century and lots of artists joined other people at fancy hotels to do take haschisch and opium!

I totally get thinking that a long book should be longer! I've been thinking that War and Peace should've been longer so that Tolstoy could add in more personal details in the War sections to link the reader to the events. I think nowadays more books are published in series instead so there's more time to develop characters!

Basically the female character is she better than daisy from Gatsby ?

Its so interesting, Dumas Books have often those female Charactres who are not one of those sweet women. Lady de Winter from the Three Musketeers is also such a woman, who has always her own reasons behind everything she does and always plotting something around the roayal court of france.
I read The Count of Monte Christo years and years ago and still have some pictures in my mind, when I think about it.

That's also realistic to, since during those time periods most women didn't have the freedoms they do now and most were not capable of physical feats(since women were expected to a proper and delicate lady). So they made up for it by being smart, witty and being good at subterfuge and manipulation especially in the upper classes of society.
I'd have feared a noble woman more than a nobleman back then honestly.

dumas was "one of france's 3 greatest playwrights"? definitely no .
moliere, racine, corneille, etc are rolling in their graves.
