Just listening again all these years ago and forgot how brilliant The Damned were. Fantastic post punk/gothic rock. David Vanian was one hell of a front man.
I'm 53yrs old and in all my years of life the Phantasmagoria Album is the only albumn I've literally worn out from playing it so many times. Not once but twice............ It has everything........
Still can't believe I saw them at the Royal Albert Hall in 2016! If you watch any clips, the glass of wine he was drinking from on stage is in my closet! Sound guy handed it to me! What a night!
I don't care what anyone says they were the best for their time, seen them many times and always put on a great show, and they are the nicest guys you'll ever meet..
'Then..suddenly..Like a fly in a cup of tea'. Ha ha..best lyric in a song ever! The Damned's humour always shows through. Clever, eccentric and quintessentially British. I love these Gentlemen. :)
True Damned fans ??!! They have changed their style so many times, it's crazy to reduce them to the status of "punk band". Yes, the MCA records were more polished and much more "commercial" than those before, but I still think Phantasmagoria is one of their best records, along with MGE, The Black Album and Strawberries.
Not seen this or heard the song for a very long time. Superb ! I was singing along and somehow I still knew every word. Nearly 37 years since Phantasmagoria came out.
Dave's hair was beautiful....Heck, nearly all the rock stars that sported long hair in the 80's sported it beautifully! *sigh*.....When I look at how most young adult boys and men wear their long hair, it saddens me that they all go for that moptoppy emo/skater boy-ish flippy hair with side-swiped bangs, it really does......:(
Stand in a line like a parking meter Am I all alone (he's all alone) A vision of mine is becoming clear Its all so new it can't be true Sometimes the words appear in my head Sometimes I'm falling out of my bed Oh, is it a dream What does it mean Oh is it a dream What have I seen I know a man he's really awful nice He isn't here We whiled away an evening maybe two But what did that man really do Sometimes I feel like walking away Sometimes there's something I've got to say Oh, is it a dream What does it mean Oh is it a dream What have I seen Then suddenly Like a fly in a cup of tea I'm stirred and no longer free To fly away I think back to the other life That was borrowed the other night Could It be that it just might Drive me wild Oh is it a dream Oh is it a dream Oh is it a dream Oh is it a dream Am I dreaming?
I showed this song to someone when we had a lot in common. We loved each other It is a pity that not now and everything has remained an ephemeral dream. Its sad now. I come from time to time to remember and my admiration for "Phantasmagoria" album and for The Damned of course.
The guitar solo in this song is one of my favourites of all time. It's very...satisfying, not too long, and fits the feel of the song perfectly. It's reminiscent of Brian May's solo in Queen's "Play the Game". It's the climax of the song, and after it a gradual fade to the end.
Marvelous song by a truly great band! Bummer, though, that "Is It a Dream?" has been largely forgotten over the years. It deserves a much higher level of recognition and respect in 80's music history. BTW, some trivia for you: the gorgeous model on the cover of The Damned's "Phantasmagoria" album is model Susie Bicks. She eventually ended up marrying musician Nick Cage.
I dont think i have ever thought, Is it a dream? Despite the artistic times. What i have wondered in the last 12 months on several occasions in a somewhat isolated state is, was it a dream, when i have apparently retrieved a memory, or even is it a brain aberrhation that makes me think i am thinking of something familiar. Proof - fell out of plane, rich, for example. There was a definite indulgence flight that flew relatively low, perhaps so that when i returned to the microscope 50 years later ...?
Coincidentally - never heard of the song that appeared on youtube - dreamt I had my nose altered, and this morning it looks shorter and wider. If you say to the passport photographer phoned to see if he received the email you're afraid of losing face so he doesnt you dont want to be giving the neighbours more ideas.
I almost can't believe that that is Dave Vanian. Before today I'd never seen pictures of him more recent than around the time of "Machinegun Etiquette."
My amazing taste in music brought me here
An actual punk band that could play their instruments. Followed them since the 80`s. Rock on The Damned
Alison Sumner yes Alison!!!!

@@tonyrobertson1085 Sex Pistols. There ya go. ;)
@@tonyrobertson1085 lol the pistols sucked in studio and live and the clash sucked live

Excellent record!

I totally agree with you!!!
They are still playing and absolutely amazing live
And they are still going strong 2019, they will keep playing till they keel over
So versatile, the character of each tune is understood and relayed perfectly to the listener, true talent. One of my favorite bands
Also....you should listen to the damned black album !!!
Dave Vanian, a gothic God!
The epitome of punk mentality - not giving a flying fuck what anyone thinks, both musically and visually. Keep doing your own thing.
one of my favorite Damned songs
R.I.P. Bryn
Great band, great songs and never took themselves too seriously
yep, they have always been legit cool in a world full of wannabes

A shame they should have been as big as the Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshee very
underrated band.
Are you insane??
Lol
They are bigger lol 🤣

i just saw this guys played in Oakland... just amazing!!
Stand in a line like a parking meter
Am I all alone (he's all alone)
A vision of mine is becoming clear
Its all so new it can't be true
Sometimes the words appear in my head
Sometimes I'm falling out of my bed
Oh, is it a dream
What does it mean
Oh is it a dream
What have I seen
I know a man he's really awful nice
He isn't here
We whiled away an evening maybe two
But what did that man really do
Sometimes I feel like walking away
Sometimes there's something I've got to say
Oh, is it a dream
What does it mean
Oh is it a dream
What have I seen
Then suddenly
Like a fly in a cup of tea
I'm stirred and no longer free
To fly away
I think back to the other life
That was borrowed the other night
Could It be that it just might
Drive me wild
Oh is it a dream
Oh is it a dream
Oh is it a dream
Oh is it a dream
Am I dreaming?
Thanks!
I've had this album on LP and CD for 27 years, yes, since the day it came out. Until today I never knew there was a vidoe for Is It a Dream?!!!
R.I.P. Bryn Merrick, gone too soon.

You were living under a rock, honey. Check out their awesome version of ELOISE. Better than the original.
Same for me !
Depends on your age 😎 i sorta grew with them. Legends❤
Hard to believe how one of the best bands in the world could make such a low brow video.
I LOVE IT!
soooooo powerful
I can’t live with or without you

Epic solo from such an under-rated player.
Beautiful song : ) )
J’adore et je les adore depuis 1979.... oh non !!! Love...
Dave Vanian #hot #handsome
Bons tempos que só voltam quando eu ouço esses clássicos!
Bien
Holds up beautifully.
His voice…quality. The Damned are legend
Fabulous, thanks for posting this.

Vamos vamos Los Damned. Alegría y placer para los oídos

The only band that mattered in the 70'0-80's.. The Damned~!

Very underated group...enough said x
Their best years in my humble opinion. Really likeed the direction they took at this point in their careers
thank you....for posting 😢
One of my favorite ten second guitar solos
Short and snappy in true 80s fashion, but rocking it right out there.
Aside from Siouxsie and other bands I probably have yet to listen to, only The Damned could make a sunny day look Goth.
"I think back to the other life
That was borrowed the other night
Could It be that it just might
Drive me wild"
The nightly visits of your memory.
Fasntastic song!
phantasmagoria.their finest hour
You really believe that?
Yes, I do...
Thanks! that's great!
Hay mi Corazon por Dave! dreamy as shit!
The great band !
I liked ! :)
Dave Vanian is a fusion of Robert Smith the Cure and Pete Burns The Dead or Alive.
He was around before either of them.
@@LeeRatbag - *_THANK YOU!!_*
Sure, they didn't lack inspiration. Each song is totally different from the other and is simply great.
Really good
an underrated classic

I wish it could be a dream .
So Epic...If they would just Tour California again...
We all know their top cover that was haunting but best in the 80s.
Brilliant
so weird to see such a radical change in their career
I respectfully disagree.
Only the best bands can do this and still survive.
Only a radical change if you've never listened to machine gun etiquette, the black album and strawberries
So hard not to love every song from these guys, amazing band!
ohooo ,is it dream
❤️
Yes
