I'm happy that he opt in. It's not like the Cubs was going to get Juan Soto if Bellinger opted out. If they were going to get a star bat, it would have to be via trade.
I’m very excited about this announcement! I know a lot of fans and, probably, Jed Hoyer are not happy about this decision, but, with the uncertainty of what PCA can do in a full season or if Micheal Busch struggles in his second season, or if Suzuki has any prolonged oblique issues, having Bellinger on the roster makes sense. Plus, keep in mind, opting-in doesn’t keep him immune from a trade. There will be a time in the near future to bring up Owen Caissie, but, keep in mind, he’s only 21 and hasn’t even played a full season in Iowa yet. He’ll have his chances.
Love Cody, but they still don't have anyone scary in this lineup. My fear is another mediocre year with the same team. Can't believe heads haven't rolled in the front office yet.
Honestly I wish he would have opted out. Less than 20 homers last season just doesn’t cut it. I think bringing in some of the younger players from the minors would have been a bit better. Shaw and Caissie seem to be a much better option and much less expensive. I don’t like what the Cubs have done with the team so far. Hope they get some better players to perform.Busch should remain on first and Paredes needs to go. He doesn’t fit well with this team.
I felt 50/50. Jed should just delay Caissie until the deadline and trade Cody. I don't see Cody as a difference maker even if he puts up 2023. It would take Paredes putting up a 5 WAR and Busch and PCA taking it to the next level.
It’s wrong! We would have done better for someone that has real possibility of hitting more than 18hrs. I also don’t think that Pete Alonso is an answer.
@joemendell9264 Cody had a broken rib and finger to deal with. Plus the park factor was suppressing all hitting at home. His splits were far worse at home. So you add that up you take 4 WAR production and it drops to 2WAR.
It’s wrong! We need to get someone who can hit more than 18 hrs even at Wrigley. He doesn’t look like he has a very positive appearance around the Cubs. Pete Alonso is also not the answer.
Nothing against Belinger, but he was already a misfit luxury re-signing last year. Then you traded for a 26 year old minor league 1B--who did fine, but mark my words: "Zahir Hope has a greater potential of becoming a true star than any player OR prospect in the entire organization." Gift wrapping him (to the DODGERS of all teams) is going to haunt the Cubs.
@@plus790 I was more concerned about the lefty. Hindsight is 20/20. At that time Cody was still on the market and they had no 1B option. PCA did not even get a hit in his stint. So what Jed did at that time was answer a question. Cody resigning was a fan appeasement to put asses in the seats. On paper that team was a 70 win team.
We need to still find a star to give us a shot. We have to start bringing Caissie, Shaw and maybe others up from farm. Hoyer may need to get creative and trade some of our present starters including our No Trade Contract players! Belly obviously did not have a market for his services at least at his current 27.5 per year contract. More pressure on Hoyer for sure! Belly is a good player but certainly not a star and now injury prone. PCA is now at the premium outfield position and Belly playing elsewhere is now overpaid in my opinion!
Nothing wrong with this. They wouldn't have done anything had he opted out. Cody was hurt most of last season and still played as well as anyone on the team. If he stays healthy, look for him to have a great year.
1) Of course he opted in. Anyone reporting he was probably going to opt out was in search of clicks. These "MLB insiders" have ZERO inside knowledge, and most of them don't know anything about baseball. 2)I'm glad he did. They get instantly worse without him, and I have zero faith the front office would take that 27MM and spend it in a way that makes the team better.
Super happy , Jed would not get a better position player with that $. If he opted out maybe Corbin Burns would be good but no faith in Jed to replace him with a better player. Welcome back Cody , who is our best position player
Great news. A quality player and a quality guy. Such a flexible player who can play any OF position, 1st or DH. Only problem is the disgusting hoyer at the top makes everything go bad and no one able to meet their potential in a total void of honor and leadership. Maybe it can be better this year and hopefully hoyer has not cursed the team.
with the Belli news they are stuck. If they were bold they would sign Alonso&trade for Vlad...Happ-CF, Vlad-3B,Belli-RF, Alonso-1B,Seiya-DH,Nico-2B,Dansby-SS, Amaya-C, PCA-CF. Trade Paredes,Busch,Caissie, &Alcantara or other prospect for Vlad. But Ricketts will say no

Jed needs to be gone ASAP

Another mediocre season brought to you by the Chicago Cubs

Belli+ for Soto now!😊

It would’ve been nice to see Juan Soto as the next young Dominican superstar on the Cubs like Sammy Sosa became a superstar on the Cubs

.258 , 20 hr’s ,78 rbi , 36 2b , 2 3b, 15 sb , but he is a really good fielder, OF or 1B ,hopefully I’m wrong

Sign Bauer nowadays!

I think it gives Jed his reason to over spend on 2 or 3 meh players and telling us we will have to out perform projections again

Jed can't succeed without Theo
Looks like the Cubs are gonna have another 83 win season 🙄 NO STARS…. Do we NOT see why the Dodgers won the World Series STAR PLAYERS!!!
Not happy. 18 Hr and 78 rbi is not good enough. He's not the same player he used to be. They should cut him and bring up some of the young prospects.
Perades trade was an epic fail
Well, there you have it, he's opting in, I think he will improve in 2025... Hello from Venezuela! Go Cubs!
