There is "less labor" in "building structures" than in "moving dirt"? Are you "moving dirt" in wheelbarrows? By bucket brigade? The "comment" was why does "the authority" need more "staff" when there isn't more "labor" on the project. It takes 350+ "staffers" to "oversee" or whatever the hell you call it when as "progress" is made on "infrastructure" - particularly "structures" - which require "moving dirt" throughout the process of constructing them when its an "infrastructure project" - there should be a reduction in required "labor" as more and more "pick and shovel" work is finished. And if 350+ "staffers" are "required" now how the hell has the project been chronically "understaffed" for many, many years at least according to the former CEO who typically "reported" several dozen "unfilled positions" at every board meeting during his "CEO report". I do recall he seemed to do the "financial committee" meeting "reports" as well. He seemed to make a "shorthanded" staff spend money pretty well. And now there is an "acting CFO" and a "design build expenditure" chart that "can be skipped" that shows huge fluctuations in "expenditures" that barely "correlate" with the "labor report" chart at all with it's relatively "flat" labor "curve". And design-build expenditure PEAKED in MAY at the beginning of the "construction season" before dropping dramatically in June and July and THEN climbing again in August-September? Did all of "staff" take June and July off so there was no one to "approve" design-build expenditures and how did "labor" remain so "flat" as "DBE" was like a roller coaster? I'm also wondering why an "auditor" did the "reporting" of a "minimal" issue like multiple "currency rates" and a couple of...staffers maybe?...having "Canadian rates". Does the authority's "resource pool" contain both U.S. DOLLARS and "Canadian dollars" and how in the hell is any kind of legitimate accounting possible with "exchange rates" involved? And isn't that project supposed to produce AMERICAN JOBS? Or maybe "American" is/was used in the "context" that any job anywhere in "America" - all Nortth and Central and South of it - is an "American job". How many "guest workers" do we have on "staff" and what the hell "expertise" or other "special" talents/skills/education do THEY have when it comes to "bullet trains" in "America" when they "hail" from Canada or "Europe" this side of the English Channel? I can see Japanese or German or Spanish or Chinese "bullet train" expert "guest workers". Canada doesn't even have "passenger rail" and the UK has never built "high speed rail" anywhere but "on paper" and even that required and requires their "experts" making up the definition of "high speed rail". And they sure as shit have zero experience when it comes to "tunnel building" under real HILLS much less MOUNTAINS. The "highest point" in "Great Britain" is about the same elevation as the "middle of Nebraska". And there is ZERO "infrastructure" in 95% of that "nation" by any MODERN definition of "infrastructure". They are "tunnel building" for "High Speed 2". The have 4 tunnels to "build", the "longest" is 10ish miles witn a giant "90-degree turn" right in the "middle" of it and every tunnel "build" involved/involves 2-4 "TBMS" presumably for "two-way tunneling" except one tunnel where they used one TBM, "built" one "half" of one tunnel and then had to "relocate" the TBM back to the original "starting point" - that was/is at the bottom of a "shaft" a couple dozen meters "across" and several times that deep they had to "dig" to get a TUNNEL BORING MACHINE IN "POSITION" TO "BUILD" A TUNNEL THAT APPARENTLY SOME "EXPERTS" DECIDED TO "BUILD" FROM THE "INSIDE OUT" - and "build" the "other half" of the tunnel. And the "images" the HS2 "staff" has "published" of a supposed HS2 tunnel once "built" are taken from the "inside looking out" - about 20 meters "inside" - and show a tunnel "built" at least 25 meters (call it 80 feet) in diameter and allegedly with one TBM? Sorry. No freaking way. You cannot "bore" a tunnel remotely close to that large unless you "bore" a "pilot hole" and then "enlarge" it from there. An "enlargement" that may "only" double the tunnel diameter but because Pi means removing at least double the "soil" that the TBM removed. Their tunnel "builds" involve low single-digit miles of tunnel length per TBM, that island "nation" basically has ZERO "bedrock" and is just an "alluvial plain" of sedimentary "rock" that is only "rock" because it's too wet to be called "stone" and they call a tunnel "built" as soon as they have made the hole big enough and have it "lined" with "shotcrete" or concrete "panels" they "attach" to the "rock walls" and it still takes them about a "year per mile" to "build tunnels" in "rock" that doesn't even require "pick and shovel work" to dig a hole in 30 meters down, lol. And "Britons" call that "one of the largest construction projects in the world". Yeah. "One of" means that every construction project "in the world" actually qualifies. Going to "Great Britain" or any other "Commonwealth nation" for "expertise" on any construction project that doesn't involve LEGOs much less a "megaproject" to build transportation infrastructure in "America" just because they "sound smart" with their "accented EnglishES" as the supposed "creators" of the "English language" AND claim to be "creators" of "modern America" because they "colonized" a supposed "wilderness" and "wasteland" they never "explored" much less "settled" past the "coastal lowlands" is a great way to make sure that when the REAL WORK of "building a railroad" begins and "staff" has to "partner" with "suppliers" and "vendors" of the actual RAILROAD BUILDING MATERIALS AND "ROLLING STOCK" THEY WILL ALL HAVE LONG SINCE "RETIRED" BACK TO THEIR RESPECTIVE "COMMONWEALTH NATIONS" AND "CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHIES" WHERE THEY CAN TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF "CURRENCY RATE" ISSUES THAT WERE "MINIMAL" FOR "OVER A DECADE" BEFORE "STAFF" WAS FORCED TO HIRE PROFESSIONAL "BEAN COUNTERS" TO "CHECK THE BOOKS" ONCE THE "ACTING CFO" CEO - THAT "SAT ON THE BOARD" OR AT LEAST WITH THE BOARD AT "THEIR" MEETINGS "STEPPED DOWN" NOT EVEN A "FISCAL YEAR" AFTER A FEW BOARD MEMBERS WEREN'T SATISFIED WITH 5-SLIDE "SUMMARIES" AND 10-SLIDE "REPORTS" ON THE "RESOURCE POOL" AND HOW "STAFF" WAS RESPONDING TO THEIR "REQUESTS" FOR "ADDITIONAL INFORMATION". UNFORTUNATELY "STAFF" STILL INCLUDES "GUEST WORKERS" AND OTHER "EXPERTS" THAT "HAIL" FROM "UP NORTH" AND "ACROSS THE POND" WHERE THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE "SOIL MAPS" OR "GEOLOGIC SURVEYS" OR A SINGLE CONSTRUCTION COMPANY THAT CAN "BUILD TUNNELS" WITHOUT IMPORTING "LABOR" FROM "DEVELOPING NATIONS".
@ do you not understand they had to first acquire the land and build literally dozens of bridges and one of the longest tunnels in North America? It’s not like there was just empty land to start building. Most land owners were strong arming the government and not selling land because they knew they could make more $$
They’re still building it. What’s being built now is what was voted for, a high speed train connecting LA and SF via the Central Valley cities. They’re starting in the Central Valley for several reasons, including limited funding. If they had more funding they could start on expanding beyond the Central Valley. And if you want to talk about a real ‘boondoggle’, how about the billions of dollars spent every year on expanding freeways that only make traffic worse and further increase our dependency on cars? Building alternatives to driving like high speed rail is the only proven way to actually reduce traffic and decrease car dependency.
GOTTA MAKE IT GO OVER BUDGET SO THE CONTRACTORS CAN MAKE AN EXTRA FEW MILLIONS
How long have they done this project and Mr. Chairman doesn't
know whats up? Stop the insults!
WHERE IS OUR MONEY??
Boondoggle??
So was the awful Eiffel Tower, the Sidney Opera House (1,400% over budget), and the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge.
Now, all icons.
Only one "makes money". And is INFRASTRUCTURE.

Welcome to the biggest Boondoggle in California history. What happened to the plan the people of California voted for.
it will be built. the federal gov was expected to allocate 2/3 of the projects' costs. that is why it is taking so long it will be built

it's happening, just slower than we would have hoped
