I've been collecting records since the mid 50's....every so often I hear a new performer that "knocks me out"...welcome to my list of favourites Serena!
Quelle merveilleuse jeune femme! quelle voix extraordinaire!
God (or lack thereof) bless Leonard Cohen for writing this masterpiece. God (or lack thereof) bless Serena Ryder for putting a wonderful twist on an already great song And finally, God (or lack thereof) bless Stuart Maclean for promoting up-and-coming Canadian artists. This radio show really gives a taste of Canadian culture. It makes me proud to live in the best country on Earth! We can laugh at ourselves and we can cry with others. I am a 15 year old proud Canadian and I approve this message.
Wow, Miss Serena has won me over on this performance. Beautifully done. I love it. I wish I knew she sang this, I would have requested Serena to sing this when she was doing her Regina Folk Festival 2012 workshop.
Screw comparing her to other artists! She's a GREAT CANADIAN artist, that can throw her voice around and make the song better than the original (to some). Go Canada
Thanx billk, i rememeber her now as I was watching Rockwiz that night and was blown away by her.She doesn't have to tart-up to display her talents. Lior was excellent in that duet too. Cheers
Brilliant...L Cohen would have been so proud of you..You have taken this song to another level..though I m kinda stoned now...I m pretty sure you did..I never heard of you before until this song..I am your fan now.
I love Serena's music and singing style. Lately she reminds me of Amy Winehouse a little....More talent in her little finger than Amy will ever have. Go Canada
Amazing song! The lyrics is in this song are absolutely amazing. I think this song was written by Leonard Cohen to be sung many years later by Serena. There is a great warning in the lines "Yes you who must leave everything that you cannot control. It begins with your family, but soon it comes around to your soul." and "If your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn They will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem." ... probably the single best lyrics I have ever heard in a song. Here's to the great poet Leonard Cohen and the great singer Serena Ryder. Even more amazing is the origins of the song: www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=14129
yes a truely amazing song written by cohen back in 1965,I like the way she brings it to life in a different way than leonard does, and yes wonderful lyrics a ,Ive been where your hanging i think i can see how your pinned, when your not feeling holy your lonieness says that youve sinned,we wernt lovers like that and besides it would still be alright.
You forgot Arcade Fire, Bruce Cockburn, Kate and Anna McGarrigle , The New Pornographers , Jane Siberry , Joni Mitchell , The Band and Godspeed You Black Emperor... I'm not Canadian but I believe that Canada produces truly stunning musical talent....ALL of those artists that I have mentioned and all the artists mentioned by Capt.Konrad ( except Serena Ryder ) are people I own hundreds of albums by... In the case of Neil and Joni around about 60 - 70 albums alone Thankyou Canada..
What are you talking about????? This is a HORRIBLE rendition of this song. She has a good voice, but completely misses the mood and interpretation of the lyrics. This cover is grotesque.

This is my favourite version of Sisters Of Mercy. I like most of the covers of this song, but the strong voice of Serena Ryder touches me the most.

I've been listening to versions of this since the early 70s, and this is the finest.
Well done Serena, class.
Long time favorite song as performed by Judy Collins and Leonard Cohen. Thanks for another version to put in the rotation.

I first came across her in Australia on RocKwiz. She is a great live performer.
Serena and leonard. Pretty sweet combo!
She has that edge that Melissa Etheridge once had. Love to hear her cover "Like The Way I Do."

serena's no fool, and there's no betrayal in this reading. she just sings in the voice of a different protagonist - more pogue than priest, is all.
she's good live :)
good stuff
this surprised me. it may be the definitive version of this tune.
What are you talking about????? This is a HORRIBLE rendition of this song. She has a good voice, but completely misses the mood and interpretation of the lyrics. This cover is grotesque.
wow
@treehugger99999 Very mature of you, and well said!:)
Sorry Leonard, she beats you and any other cover of this song. Hands down.
You have no taste in music.
This was my change
Was this in Edmonton?
the sound quality stinks here, it was sooo good on tv...thanks for posting though!
Why does this girl hate Leonard Cohen?
from a man
She is good but completely misinterprets the song.
Good singer but this great song isn't for her. No real depth of feeling, no understanding of the lyric.
Destroying this gem of a song!
really bad
