    I'm in awe of the beautiful scenery you witnessed there in the Great Smokey Mountains. My daughter Kaylee cuddled up with me and we paused the video several times just to say "Wow, just look at that". While there is nothing like being immersed in nature, your videos always bring me "there" without being there. Thank you for that. Very therapeutic when you can't always get out there

    Another very enjoyable video. The fall colors were showcased beautifully. I think you were very wise to pick the Deep Creek area to visit as it seemed to offer much more solitude this time of year than the main sections of the park. Deep Creek can get quite busy in the summer since one of the bigger park campgrounds is there as well as it being a prime tubing spot. You can put-in near(ish) Indian Creek Falls and float past Tom Branch Falls to parking area. Great Smoky Mountains will likely always be in my top five favorite National Parks. It holds such significant memories for me in all stages of my life from childhood to young adulthood to the start of my married life and fatherhood. I will share one of the funniest memories of my adventures here which occurred during a trip last year. We were camping at Elkmont and had a great walk-in site right next to a rushing stream. My wife and I were prepping for dinner at the campsite and the boys were playing in the stream. I walk over to start the fire and stop in shock. I look over at the boys and catch my middle child drinking the stream water out of his shoe. I was worried all the next day that he was going to get a bad stomach bug but nothing came from it. As for the park itself, the top highlights are mostly on the Tennessee side. If you get back there, I really urge you to go to that side. You have Cades Cove with Abrams Falls (my favorite waterfall in the park), Clingman’s Dome, Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail with Grotto Falls and Rainbow Falls, Laurel Falls, Charlie’s Bunion, and the Chimney Tops (not as great now since the top is still closed from the fire years ago. I need and want to do Alum Caves to Mount LeConte with a stay overnight in the lodge. Oh, one final plug. During late May timeframe, synchronous fireflies can be seen at the Elkmont area of the park. It is a really neat experience. Take care!

    Cool video! It's interesting how you bookended this video with references to cemeteries (or, at least, concluded on an unfinished road to one).
    As an undergrad, I interned for NASA at Langley Research Center. Behind my office on the base was a very old cemetery. I used to go out and eat my lunch or take a coffee break on a bench located just outside of the cemetery fence. I used to read the news on my smartphone. I realized that the people who consecrated that old cemetery probably never imagined that someone would one day look up information about that cemetery and the names on the tombstone from a phone there.
    One day, an elderly couple (without the mandatory NASA badge) showed up and began clearing the leaves. After striking up a conversation, they let me know that they were part of the family buried there. The grave stones were all dated in the mid-19th Century. Obviously, this particular cemetery predated both the NASA and Air Force bases. After the government bought the land, the descendants were provided permanent access to the cemetery. In fact, they said that the first road in what is now NASA Langley Research Center was paved by the local government to give the family access to the cemetery.
    Oh...and be careful with a Blizzard! I tried the upside-down thing after a DQ stop on the way home from a game. Coach had me scrub the entire bus when we arrived back to the school. Lesson learned!

    Thanks Randy & Julie! You are right about the sounds...one of my favorite places in the Smokeys is the Chimney tops Picnic Area. Love to park there and "rock hop" down the stream. One of the most relaxing sounds there is the sound of the rushing water. It is so "outside" of the normal sounds of life. The hiking trails offer a mix of quite, rushing water, and other natural sounds that make it so amazing to be out on them. Your suggestion to enjoy the sounds is right on!

      Actually their video is deceptive - fall is the busiest time . If someone spots a bear , the road ( only one way each way) will back up for miles and traffic moves literally inches at a time ). I found spring the best time to go - it seemed almost deserted compared to fall . Leaves are gorgeous in the fall admittedly. Traffic is a little less into November but then a lot of the leaves are also gone

    • @AmericasParks

    My cousins and I just went to the Smokies this year as well and we did that cemetery hike, it was very peaceful as we were the only ones on it, but I think we almost started crying when we saw that really steep incline at the end lol. Great video!

    Loved the Autumn (Fall) colours in the trees and although the trail looked real nice to follow but it did look a real canny pull up there. Indian Creek Falls proved to be a real delight after the cemetery and you saved the best waterfall to the last, what a great drop that was. On a great day like that I would have kept out of the tunnel, also I hate that closed in feeling! Take care over there, cheers Alan

    Thank God the Road to Nowhere actually does go to nowhere. The construction of this road was one of the great environmental battles of the "environmental" 1960's. Even renowned jurist Stephen Douglas of the U.S. Supreme Court weighed in on preventing the road from devastating the integrity of the GSMNP. The proposed road would have bisected a large portion of the park and forever obliterated the wilderness character of a large part of the park. There are plenty of roads through national parks and not enough true wilderness areas, especially in the eastern U.S. So the Road to Nowwhere actually stands as a monument to those who courageously campaigned to preserve some true wilderness for future Americans to appreciate.
    As to those who feel that the government reneged on a promise, they are now the economic beneficieries of the millions of tourists that visit the Smokies every year and the thousands of mountain cabin owners that are only there due to the preservation of the Smokies.

      Appreciate the insights which make perfect sense. Later learned they folks agreed to a 52 million dollar settlement from the US government. Interesting to learn how controversial this project was. TheI vibe I got while there was - "bad government/feel sorry for the people."

    I just got back from here spent 2 days. 1 day on NC side and one day in TN. Stayed in Cherokee due to no room in Gatlinburg over spring break.. and thankfully I did. Really peaceful. I did the deep creek area hike and I saw the last two of those falls, but had a completely different experience than you did as we went to some other trails that connected in there... one of them took us up into the mountain further and I’d say was borderline strenuous... another took us up a mountain creek that was a muddy fun time. This is what happens when you let your kids chose to go places. I also went to Tunnel to Nowhere, but with kids a different experience. That tunnel graffiti is not good for children either. I wish there was something that could be done to fix that graffiti. I like the idea of it, but not the execution, but I don’t think the artists care.

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good points - so many great trails out there and the graffiti - not a fan either. Was so careful with the edit to keep out the offensive stuff (and it wasn't easy).

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ronnie - great question! Funds are really limited for me so here's what we do - airline tickets on credit card miles, National Park yearly pass, campgrounds (very limited hotels), eat out of the car (or cheap fast food - Subway, etc). Beyond gas, not much that will require money on a National Park trip. Hope that helps a little!
