Maybe not "American" but definitely not in the social standard of South Korea/Japan/most of Europe, and other major cities outside those regions. I'd argue it's targeting the essentials for the average American student going to an average university in America to look decent. Also probably more geared towards California or southern states, since you definitely need more layers in your essentials for the northeast.

Come join a catholic missionary college in India. No sleeveless, no backless, forget about speghetti straps, no ripled jeans, no shorts, skirts doesn't matter even if the skirt is extremely long to cover till ur feet still not allowed, no dresses, no cropped tops, and no sweats because apparently you only wear sweats as pajamas.
And being able to afford someone to have them non stop clean and available to you because doing laundry takes time. So us low income people NEED to have enough clothes to rotate around. We dont sit on our bums whilst the maid does our laundry.
