The best place to carry water is in your body. Always drink your fill at a water source before you step back out then drink frequently and don't worry too much about running out. The water does your body no good if it stays in your bottle. But always carry at least enough to last you to the second known source ahead of you. You never know when the next source might be dry or too polluted (dead animal upstream, etc.)
Dixie, the Sawyer squeeze does not remove viruses and other things that causes diarrhea. Which is caused by hikers not burying their #2. This requires the filter and the aqua Mira.
great video. Generally I drink water that comes from springs at high elevations untreated, but always treat stream water. I prefer pump filters to gravity feed. Kataydin Hiker is a good one
Yeah, I should've talked about pumps, but I don't think I saw any on the trail. I drank from a spring and it was safe during my hike, but I started taking less risks as time went on. Being sick on trail is horrible!
Boiling is a great option if you are boiling water for your meal, anyway. Potable Aqua tabs are very light and if you treat water in a bottle for use later in the day, the time factor is negated. Both of these will kill everything and no extra equipment needed. But the Sawyer Mini and that gravity filter are sooo convenient...
You present your experiences very well WL, editing the videos must be very fun for you. Almost all of my past adventures have been off the beaten paths of the Rockies however, I will be embarking on a kayak journey around the state of Florida soon, then the western coastline. Cheers to you, and now you have a new supporter for sure.
Jessica, I bought your book. I can't think of a better way to support what you do here and for the wonderful videos you made of your AT thru hike. I still have some of those to watch! I'm happy to have stumbled across your channel and I'll certainly recommend it to others. I have a hiking friend who, unfortunately for you, is an Alabama fan. Maybe he won't let that keep him from watching your amazing thru hike videos. :-)
Thank you for the advice about using the Smart water bottle tip as a back flusher instead of the syringe. It worked fantastically! I didn't know anybody made the drinking tip like that so I never thought about it. I would even say it works better than the syringe since it's much simpler and less work to just line up the filter and water bottle and squeeze. One time though I dropped that water bottle near a sandy ledge and I immediately stuck my hiking poles in front of it. Whew! Scared I lost it for a second.
In addition to the Sawyer squeeze I did buy a Platypus inline carbon filter to get rid of any potential chemicals. Like one person posted earlier many of the streams had that foam build up here and there and although I'm not 100% sure what's causing it I'd carry the extra oz or so to try to filter that out.
Just took my first hike for 10 days on the Florida Trail. Used water from lakes and ponds (no rivers avail) in the areas we hiked. Used the bandana and boiled 10-15 min. Swamp tea wasn't bad. TY Celestial seasonings lol
Thanks for sharing ! Gravity feeding works great. I started with a pump type and a large reservoir bag which got old quick. I tried the steripen which works good ( I didn' t get sick ) but requires batteries (no bueno). I have had good luck gravity feeding my sawyer off of bladders. Letting the filter do the work while doing other stuff is awesome IMHO. Lots of excellent stuff on your channel - I dig it !
Thought I would add some things I learned that might be helpful. There are two kind of fiddlehead ferns and you can eat either one but the taller variety that branches above the ground has to be cooked to remove the bitterness. I had sautéed ramps and fiddleheads a lot while backpacking, great source of fiber. Never had chicken of the woods, another research project for me. You mentioned morels. The true morel has a hollow stem. The solis stemmed false morel isn't poisonous, just bitter. Berries are great but if you eat too many the seeds can do mean things to your insides. Well, hope to see you out on the trail one day. I'm still planning my AT trip, thinking about SOBO. Have a merry Christmas and enjoy the outdoors. Especially that NCT hike. I envy you!
Great advice especially at 7.40. Also good to remember that your water can quickly freeze overnight while you're out and you've then got to carry a useless block of ice around with you all day...
Love your channel. Its worth noting that us flipfloppers and the sobos are going through the south in late summer now and 4-5m between sources has often become 10-12. Make a flipflopper vid pretty please.
I have to second the Platypus gravity feed! We took the 4 litre and it was great. Ended up filtering for the two of us and two others that ran out of purification tablets. Filters 4 litres in ~1.5-2 minutes. 356 grams for the Platypus system.
Lifestraw negatives: I'm not leaning down to stick my face in the stream. You can't cook with the water you draw (unless you backwash). I have one that actually has a container with it to collect water. The number of people that DON'T know to pre-filter water (through a shirt or sock) before using their filter astounds me. I learned that in Boy Scouts in the 80s. You filter the water through cloth to remove the sediment, turtle shit etc. Before subjecting your filter, purification tabs, gravity filter etc. To ALL of the things floating in the water... it will add MUCH more life to your filter and reduce the need to backwash it.
thanks for sharing. i think about diarrhea, LOL! i don't have a concept of a "dirty" water bottle. i always use a cooking pot to get untreated water. i don't filter water for boiling. got used to dead bugs and floaties.
When it comes to water, I will go through a full gallon on a 90+ degree day. If I could, I'd drink a full quart at the start of my trip, and carry 3. Thats just me though.I have it stuck in my head that I want to carry a full days water without having to stop.
Great video but you really didnt touch on too many filters..............I personally carry the Katadyn Hiker Pro and love it for long hikes. It's rock solid reliable, you can get parts anywhere on the trail and it'll fill your bladder inside your pack etc.I know it's heavier than a gravity filter by about 7 oz but the convenience capacity and speed make up for the slight penalty.I take it with me except on UL treks and have had it for years.Over the years I've bought others like the MSR etc but somehow the Hiker Pro always gets called upon and has never let me down unlike others.
Love the channel. Actually I have been researching water filters and had just about decided on the Platypus. After seeing them in use by so many here on TH-cam I have almost certainly made up my mind. Thanks for the info. Keep up the good work.
Hi Dixie. I wonder how different the water source availability was on the AT this year vs last. Lots of rain for last year, some of the vids looked like the AT was a stream. Not so much this year, especially in the Northeast, lots of small creeks and streams are drying up. I am looking forward to your next adventure.
MrC I just did a section hike from PA through MD to Harpers Ferry and the water was a real issue. We've had so little rain for the last few weeks that some water sources listed in AWOL and on Guthook were completely dried up. Fortunately the hiker network was great as always and I got good intel at shelters with enough notice to carry extra when needed. The longest stretch I had to go was about nine miles between sources.
From memory I don't think it is as Compact, holds a lot more litres. Sawyer's bladder system in a lot closer to the Platypus system you are using. Anyways keep put one foot in front of the other, happy travels :)
I really like all of your videos - thanks for sharing. Have you ever considered making a video on how you make your videos? When on the trail how many minutes of video did you record to make an "episode"? Did you decide on a concept or style for your videos? What cameras and software do you use to make the videos?
Perhaps I am a bit over zealous but remember that every time you dip you hands or your bottle, it is grossly contaminated. I am not sure if it helps but I keep sanitizer in my water kit and I slather it on my hands and bottle when I am done.
Hey, How often are you alone and not around other people? How common is that? The reason I'm asking is because I get anxiety and kinda prone to panic attacks when I'm in a remote place and there are no people around
Show us your mitts!...Sorry, I mean mitts as in mittens or hand protection, did you carry any gloves on the trail for warmth or heat protection (fire handling) or blisters protection?
HAHAA! Thats funny. I said the same exact thing about the Life Straw to a buddy of mine the other day lol. I was explaining to him why the life straw would only really be useful as an emergency water filter because "what are you gonna do just suck up the water and spit it into a pot or something I mean come on lol.. What if you want to share?" lol
So glad I found this channel....gotta big question for you....due to work I honestly cannot take off 5-7 consecutive months to hike the AT start to finish.....My question is: what about section hiking? Is this frowned upon? does it still count towards your 2000 miler?....apologies....I feel like I just bombarded you.....
Hang It, Fire! From what I gather from Dixie's vids, if you do the whole AT in 12 consecutive months, you're a thru hiker. If you do the whole trailer period, you're a 2000 miler! Neither is anything to sneer at!!!
Hang It, Fire! If anyone frowns upon you, well screw them. Lol. Dixie says alot, "Its not a job". Dam, take 10 years and do it sectionally. Who cares. Its your life. I wouldnt care if it took your entire lifetime. If you started at the beginning and went to the end, you could honestly say, Im a thru hiker. Dont get hung up on titles. Alot of bushcraft people do. My motto is, "Do what you can when you can and enjoy every minute of it." The majority of hikers are wonderful people and wont frown upon you. Theyll be happy for you.
Been watching tons of your videos trying to get ready for my 2017 AT attempt. There are a few things I haven't saw many people talk about. 1. Are there any use to invest in a spot tracker 2.How many people carry bear maze . 3. What the best thing to do about maps? Is the weight of some kind of traction aid at the beginning worth taking. Is this info in your E book? Oscar
I've known the 2 litre plus a day rule for a long time but still found that even hiking 14 miles or more with a monster newb pack (50lb) I never drank more than 2 litres of water a day. Maybe if you include tea at camp 😎
Water sources in central Florida are there but it can be dangerous. It's not usually moving water and can have lots of reptile and amphibian activity. This is dangerous for biological and obviously imediate physical reasons. 8ft alligators love waterside visitors and don't give Crocodile kisses. Along with the regular sunbathing water moccasins and the often difficult access i think water should be carefully considered on The Florida Trail. New Hiker, No Call, Prepping 2020 AT NOBO
After a trip with the Sawyer Mini I will agree that the squeezing does get old pretty quick. I admit, backflushing may have helped. What about storage and cleaning, did you use bleach on occasion to clean things, or for long term storage?
Haha, right? I know it sounds lazy, but I hated the squeezing. I just back flushed well before storing. I'm sure they probably have specific instructions on the packaging (or website).
Lisa R Freddes Camlebac makes some drop-tablets for cleaning/disinfecting there bladers. (smells like bleach) I only clean mine when taking it out of storage at beginning of year.
theBUBBAMANcan I agree that Katadyn is the best brand. I haven't done my thru-hike yet, but I always use the Katadyn Hiker Pro. Less than 1 lb, iirc. I've been able to safely drink stagnant water from mud puddles thanks to it--it's great. So there's an idea, if you want to use Katadyn but you're worried about the weight of yours
Jessica when you were filtering the water with a bandana would it be possible to use coffee filters instead? I really enjoy your videos. thinking about hiking the AT in 2017but at age 67 not sure that I could do it.
Yup. A coffee filter will take out smaller chunks which can be an aesthetic / taste issue if you proceed to boil or chemically treat. And those chunks contribute to clogging a filter requiring more backflyshing. But a coffee filter is slower than a bandana and harder to hold in place.
Gravity filters are a love them or hate em thing and I honestly dont know too many that like them because of the time they can take for any amount of water.I'd HIGHLY suggest a Katadyn Hiker Pro to anyone except a serious ultra light hiker. It's a classic proven design that you can get parts for and roughly 40 strokes makes a liter.Another thing is you can pump directly into your bladder without having to unpack it and they have adapters for every type of bottle you can think of..........The downside is it's 10-11 oz but it is good for one to 5 people. Now I do go UL hiking but then I use treatment tabs ;-)
just want to say thank you my wife and i follow you on you tube and you have pushed us to make plans for our at/triple crown thru hikes:) i was just wondering what kind of water bottles do you use or can you recommend a good one thanks again your awesome. timber wolf
Hey Dixie! Did you normally 'camel up' at the water source? Was this something that worked for you? I have seen others mention this, but curious if you tried it. The theory is that it would allow you to carry less. The times I have tried this (shorter weekend type hikes) it makes my stomach upset. Thanks for the awesome videos!
It works somewhat, but you have to make sure not to just gulp down water, as it will go straight through you. Your body is hydrated best when you sip water over an extended period of time from what I've read and experienced
thought this might interest you. Pipeline to go through the AT www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/mountain-valley-pipeline-appalachian-trail_us_5855aaa4e4b0b3ddfd8d265e
Yes, when we can... Hiked 3 days with family, in Virginia to Damascus on AT. I so over packed, but everyone had a blast. Have videos of it on my channel! My daughter just graduated college and so wants to thru hike the AT. I think our little hike, but some inspiration in both kids hearts for the trail. I know they will never forget those 3 days together. Thanks again, great videos.
I know this is kinda personal, but did you end up with diarrhea even after these measures?!! I know in your video you just posted with your survival presentation, you said two immodium tabs isn't enough, but was that why?
If you ask people to follow advertising it will make you money but your not allowed to ask people to do it as it is misleading data I've watched a few channels where the have had black marks for it, don't want to see any thing bad happen to the channel as it's good content 👍👌
Oh! I didn't ask anyone to click the advertising. I think you misunderstood. I told them to follow the link to my ebook...which is a link I embed myself. Just like asking them to click subscribe. I never asked for them to click and advertisement that is presented by Google Adsense. Thank you for being concerned and bringing it to my attention, though! Glad you like the channel :)

Best advice on hiking on the internet. As a trained Scout Master I highly recommend Dixies advice.
Dixie, the Sawyer squeeze does not remove viruses and other things that causes diarrhea. Which is caused by hikers not burying their #2. This requires the filter and the aqua Mira.
Thank you for this. YOU rock for completing your triple crown! Huge respect and congratulations. I'm doing AT in Feb. I can't wait to get out there.

Great tips Miss Dixie!
Another great video with awesome information! Keep up the great work. Keep hiking and happy trails
I use the Sawyer Mini and it is a bit of a pain to scoop in water. Thanks for the info!
I have enjoyed many of your videos. They are very informative. I've been a hiker for many years. Getting ready for my first AT thru hike in 2018!
That's awesome, Sam! Your life will change.
I was wondering about the water situation that you faced! Thanks for the video!

the larger sawyer squeeze ( not so much the mini ) can be used as a gravity filter as well.. nice vid.
Thanks for all the info on all your videos and keeping it simple.

I was wondering about water on the AT, I am getting ready to hike a few weeks on it. Thanks this was great info.

ur videos r the best.. thanks.. i enjoy them and you'e an inspiration to get out on the trail..
Thank you for these videos. I'm planning my hike for 2018 & these are very helpful & inspiring. Thank you again!
Beautiful !
Love my Squeeze...and my mini. Again...great info. :)
Great advice especially at 7.40. Also good to remember that your water can quickly freeze overnight while you're out and you've then got to carry a useless block of ice around with you all day...
You can hang the Sawyer squeeze bags, or use the Sawyer filter with a tube and any container. Gravity doesn't care about the filter or container ;p
I enjoy your videos......good info well presented equals excellent...two thumbs up
Love your channel. Its worth noting that us flipfloppers and the sobos are going through the south in late summer now and 4-5m between sources has often become 10-12. Make a flipflopper vid pretty please.

I love how you pronounce boil. It’s like a asmr
Thanks for another great video
You can use a party balloon to blow out after back flush it will help keep from freezing.
Great video , thanks for sharing.
Very helpful, thanks.
Great! Thank you :)
Lifestraw negatives: I'm not leaning down to stick my face in the stream. You can't cook with the water you draw (unless you backwash). thanks for sharing. i think about diarrhea, LOL! i don't have a concept of a "dirty" water bottle. i always use a cooking pot to get untreated water.
i don't filter water for boiling. got used to dead bugs and floaties.
Use a Life straw for quick drinks straight from a water source.
Thanks for all your videos! As a new hiker, (Adirondacks) I've learned so much from you. :)
Great video! FYI The Sawyer can be used as a gravity filter...
Great video, great info I do not like to carry water, thumbs up !!!
Katadyne Hiker Pro works great too.
I saw that pond and the first thing I thought was "Oh no she's going to drink that!" haha
Triple070007 OMG you know what fish do in water!

Jessica when you were filtering the water with a bandana would it be possible to use coffee filters instead? I really enjoy your videos. thinking about hiking the AT in 2017but at age 67 not sure that I could do it.
you certainly can use a coffee filter. depending on the size of the mouth on your bottle, it may be harder to hold onto though
Brian watson I wondered the same! Thanks for the info! I bet a hair tie or rubber band and a cone coffee filter would stay in place well!
Yup. A coffee filter will take out smaller chunks which can be an aesthetic / taste issue if you proceed to boil or chemically treat. And those chunks contribute to clogging a filter requiring more backflyshing. But a coffee filter is slower than a bandana and harder to hold in place.
love the videos, nice intro btw!
Raquel Moore it is an awesome into, huh?! I think that every time! I'd watch a "woman vs wild" show ala Bear Grylls with Jessica instead!!!!
using the gravity filter.... if you needed 4L per day for hydration how did you schedule processing and consuming water?
Gravity filters are a love them or hate em thing and I honestly dont know too many that like them because of the time they can take for any amount of water.I'd HIGHLY suggest a Katadyn Hiker Pro to anyone except a serious ultra light hiker. It's a classic proven design that you can get parts for and roughly 40 strokes makes a liter.Another thing is you can pump directly into your bladder without having to unpack it and they have adapters for every type of bottle you can think of..........The downside is it's 10-11 oz but it is good for one to 5 people.
Now I do go UL hiking but then I use treatment tabs ;-)
just want to say thank you my wife and i follow you on you tube and you have pushed us to make plans for our at/triple crown thru hikes:) i was just wondering what kind of water bottles do you use or can you recommend a good one thanks again your awesome. timber wolf
Video was quite good. As usual, informative and to the point (AUIATTP ;)).
👍👍🐕
How crowded is the AT?? What trail is the most remote?
I bought your book that is delivered how long until I get it
what do you do for a living now?
is this vid sped up?
wheres that platypus filter\bladder link???
How did you deal with Ticks?
Have you ever tried a UV pen?
Your body is hydrated best when you sip water over an extended period of time from what I've read and experienced
i've found u can drink from more stuff than you think.
Your house looks nice and peaceful....except for those dang cars driving by constantly.
I actually like drinking hot boiled water with nothing in it.
Eleonore Bon you'd survive nicely on the trail

Subscribed after seeing you on Full Spectrum Survival channel- Really appreciate the information on this video, checking out book
Awesome! Thank you. I hope you enjoy it :) Do you do any backpacking or just getting started?
Yes, when we can... Hiked 3 days with family, in Virginia to Damascus on AT. I so over packed, but everyone had a blast. Have videos of it on my channel! My daughter just graduated college and so wants to thru hike the AT. I think our little hike, but some inspiration in both kids hearts for the trail. I know they will never forget those 3 days together. Thanks again, great videos.
Im in Love with you, you're great!!!
I know this is kinda personal, but did you end up with diarrhea even after these measures?!! I know in your video you just posted with your survival presentation, you said two immodium tabs isn't enough, but was that why?
I didn't have diarrhea from bad water, but from food poisoning I got from a frozen sandwich at a hostel :P I filtered the whole time and was fine!
"3oz come on" how things have changed
Bole the water
from a country boy you are a pretty girl and you are awesome

Good videos, be careful asking people to follow adverts for no reason you will have your account locked/deleted 👍
Hey, thanks! I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Could you explain? I'm still learning about TH-cam (even over a year later).
Glad you like the channel :)
....cutie today ;-)
Thnx 4 sharing.
All the best from Berlin Germany
