    I watched a video where the community is replacing eucalyptus and pine with cork oak trees to minimise the fire risk. It is a double bonus for the village as cork oak is a native species, quite fire resistant and a retardant,and also generates a bit of income.

      There are no “fire resistant trees” they all burn.

    Here in Japan I have come to respect the power of nature with earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, landslides, all made worse by human greed, where people settle on unsuitable land, exploit the land for short term gain, or simply don't prepare for what nature can throw at us. Like you say, living it brings about a mindset shift and that gives you the best chance of staying safe.
    I am so glad to hear that there is an amazing community, and that your volunteer firefighters did an amazing job to keep everyone safe. Really community is one thing to treasure if you find a place that has it, and I hope that by meeting new neighbours, you can become more part of that community.

    I am so thankful that you and your community were not affected by the fire. It must have been a very sobering reality check. The forest fires are one of the factors that I research most when considering moving to Portugal, understanding fire zones, how communication is disseminated locally, and how to minimise the risks, including land clearance. Glad to see that you are working on the house! All the best❤

    You guys need a small tractor with a slasher on the back - it just isn't time effective or practical to use a brush cutter and you could use it, to do so much more on your land. Nothing big, but something like a Massey Ferguson 35 or a 135, a SAME Condor or an old small Kubota - they just have to be 40hp or more, with a PTO (Power Take OFF) so you can drive most attachments. Life is always easier with a tractor. 😁Either that, or get yourself a couple of sheep to control the grass - not goats, they'll eat all your trees and escape to the neighbours and cause havoc. Good luck on the Big Re-Build👍👍

    • @TheIndigoEscape
      @TheIndigoEscape  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Phil, thank you so much for that info, I really want to get a small tractor one day hopefully soon and I will definitely take the brand's you mentioned into consideration. It's been good to get familiar with the land and plants using the strimmer, but in the long term a tractor would be so much more efficient

    • @TheIndigoEscape
      @TheIndigoEscape  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That looks like a fantastic tractor. Maybe one day we will be able to get it. Kubotas are quite popular here actually but sheep! That is something we would love to get soon!

    Again another superb video!! You guys are really becoming pros!!! Parabens!!! When we lived in California fire was a huge scare for us too. Now living in Israel we also see some natural and some not so natural fires during summer. It is very scary and we have learned to always be prepared. Fire, hurricanes, earthquakes I have been to them all and the word of advice is be always prepared. Maybe you can initiate a neighborhood watch, maybe a simple WhatsApp group to give updates in case trees fall, or grass is out of control..people from the neighborhood could volunteer to keep an eye and to help clear road sides...i always like to think of a Confucius quote that says " if you want to change the world, one must begin from one's own home, then its village and city and country and...." maybe you guys end up in that little corner of the world for a purpose. Maybe being young and have travelled around gives you a more creative way of solving problems. You can "pay back" to this amazing place by bringing some of these skills to help the local community...loved the video

    • @TheIndigoEscape
      @TheIndigoEscape  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you Paula! Really appreciate your comment! The idea of a neighbourhood watch is very good one. I'm so glad we know our neighbours well enough! It was a litle bit frustrating not being able to do anything specially when there is a language barrier. In such situation you want to have the clearest communication so we just watched and the response was out of the world. We may have a forest around us but at least feel safe that our neighbours are really pro-active and fast at responding.

    Have you considered borrowing grazing animals to cut down on the need to constantly weedwacking such a large area. Better for the climate and noise levels. The areas that are not grazed down can easily be weed wacked for fire purposes. I live in Tirol, Austria and every month the sheep show up with their little bells ding-a-linging and when the grass and brush are down they are herded off to the next field. The farmer uses electrical fencing that he takes along to the next area. They were taken away last week...I miss them and the grandkids loved the lambs.

    • @WoodworkingforAnyone
      @WoodworkingforAnyone ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This would be so inefficient for me. I would spend 12 hours a day just admiring the sheep. Then if I accidentally counted them i would fall asleep.

    Nothing more volatile then Pine and Eucalypt. Planted together is madness. Our "future timbers" forestry plantings in Australia, focused on monoculture systems of one species of Eucalypt, they failed disastrously. Portugal's reliance on these two is a disaster waiting every year.

  • @Alfablue227
    @Alfablue227 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The threat of🔥 fire in 🇵🇹 is extremely high and deadly. That's why I have yet to purchase a home in the country. I live in my own modern apt. but even then, no one is safe. Many foreigners don't realize just how volatile pine and eucalyptus are at consistently 30-40°C sunny days from May to September. With the struggles of life many here go thru to have their own abode, be it poor or not, people just freak out at the thought of losing all, even if a small fire in or around them; the winds are an issue as well. Our firefighters are some of the bravest, most incredible human beings I ever seen anywhere . They put their life at risk to save us from fire. They fight for adequate equipment, vehicles, supplies etc, for absolutely NO pay. Where else in the world can you see selfless humanity like such I don't know. But here is another reason why Portugal has survived as a nation for almost 900 years. We love each other, stick together as one and help eachother in real time of need. Thank God for these heroes and so happy you and others were safe. BTW that is an ancient water scooper! They were normally part of a water mill and there were several arms as such attached to the wheel. Heads up and keep up the good work! 🙏😘🤗♥️🇵🇹

    • @TheIndigoEscape
      @TheIndigoEscape  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Quite right. I think that when it comes to moving to the country, there is always something that's got to give. In this case the trade is forest fires. So we need to become very savvy at prevention mostly and then if it happens, how to respond. So, I'm very confident the community is ready but now we all individually need to prepare our land.
      Our dream is to buy the land behind us. I would cut all the Eucalyptus and plant native trees.

    • @Alfablue227
      @Alfablue227 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheIndigoEscape Indeed, but there is still great irresponsability and criminality, for many fires are set. Let's hope things change for the best, and we hope the arrival of new laws, and newcomers such as yourselves will give us the manpower and incentive to look out for our own land. Our population is old, our old houses and properties are being abandoned, and there is just not enough of us left for all this huge job, so thank you!

    Thank you for sharing - I’m very glad that you are safe! Do you know whether the fire killed the trees that we see in the ending drone shot? It looks like the fire moved quickly and may have just burned the dry leaves and grass under the trees and not actually killed the trees themselves. This is obviously a huge natural problem in central Portugal and I’ve seen other expatriate landowners with TH-cam channels cutting down grass and burning brush (when it’s safe). When finances allow, you may want to invest in a brush and field mower (we call them brush hogs in the US) to make the task easier - strimmers are quite heavy and supporting that weight for hours on end is very tiring.

    • @TheIndigoEscape
      @TheIndigoEscape  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm not sure if they got killed. I know Cork trees are very resiliant so I think it was only the outer layer that got damaged. Eucalyptus however is highly flammable so I would guess they may well have been damaged.

    Olá eu sou Aquilino. Esse incêndio foi em que zona de Portugal? É pena que Portugal à uns 40 ano esteja a ser consumido por incêndios todos os anos, 99%dos incêndios são de mãos criminosas! Portugal como eu o conhecia era um país lindo onde havia muita floresta! Tenham um bom fim de semana.

    Do you have any regrets in choosing the location? If they could, would they go back?

      There are no save areas in the Mediterranean countries unfortunately with climate changes we are all at risk

      We don't really. We are very happy here. Everywhere you go, you will have a risk, a silver lining and a privilege. I think this was a good way to prepare us and start to get our prevention kit sorted.

    Does anyone have a lawnmower over there

      🤣 I’m sure but the problem is that our soil is super bumpy snd has quite a bit of brambles. A common lawnmower wouldn’t last a month.

    May be this event of a fire woke people up again to the responsibility of making sure to do their due diligence. We can of hope.
    Can never forget when everything is so green that a reality check is set in place.
    Do they have reminders of fire seasons and conditions as a country?

    Esse pessoa de farramenta que vocês dizem que não sabem para que serve e que te um cabo comprido e é feito em chapa de zinco é um cabaço para tirar água de dentro de um reservatório de água ou para regar as Hortas.
