Scent of a Woman is a 1992 American drama film produced and directed by Martin Brest that tells the story of a preparatory school student who takes a job as an assistant to an irritable, blind, medically retired Army lieutenant colonel. The film is a remake of Dino Risi's 1974 Italian film Profumo di donna, adapted by Bo Goldman from the novel Il buio e il miele (Italian: Darkness and Honey) by Giovanni Arpino. The film stars Al Pacino and Chris O'Donnell, with James Rebhorn, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Gabrielle Anwar in supporting roles.
Pacino won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance and the film was nominated for Best Director, Best Picture and Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published. The film won three major awards at the Golden Globe Awards: Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Motion Picture - Drama.

Just got to see this movie, and I loved your analysis of it. Couldn’t find a lot of people that talk about this movie, which is a shame to be honest.

One of my favorite movies ever. Such great writing and acting. The characters take such personal journeys. The Oscar was deserved.

Probably my no 1 movie. I love the dark and light of both characters. The naevity of Charlie and the loss of innocence of Frank. The best and most important movie Al Pacino did. Total respect for Al Pacino as an actor in his totally convincing portrayal of a blind man. It's a film of the triumph of optimism over pessimism. This touches deeply on themes on manhood, coming of age, life choices, darkness.

I first saw this movie when I was 14, now 40 years later I watched it again through wiser eyes. It's even more magnificent than I remembered, and Pacino's performance is flawless. Tragic hero, and it makes me happy to see him reach some kind of redemption. A true masterpiece.

It's rare that a reviewer says all the things I would, expresses what I went thru watching this movie, and more. Thank you for a beautiful commentary on an unforgettable film.

Without getting into spoilers, the last 20 minutes of _PROFUMO DI DONNA_ (SCENT OF A WOMAN) are deep and moving. There's so much drama between a blind man (Captain Fausto Consolo), the young man who assists him (Giovanni "Ciccio" Bertazzi) and a girl he has known for years (Sara). There are moments where the viewer can understand what the characters are thinking and feeling despite the lack of dialogue. Unfortunately, the rest of the plot is too repetitive and a lot of the jokes fall flat. It's a shame that this classic hasn't been properly restored. If it looks and sounds this bad on Netflix (where I saw it), I can't imagine what a crappy bootleg would be like! That being said, some of the filmmaking elements are so bad (even by the standards of Italian cinema in 1974) that I doubt anyone could fix them at this point. For example, a lot of the musical pieces composed by Armando Trovajoli end very abruptly. Also, sound wasn't recorded on set, so all the lines had to be re-dubbed. The end result is so terrible that you would swear the original language was meant to be something other than Italian!

In theory, SCENT OF A WOMAN 1992 should be bad. It doesn't have the edge or the raw emotions of the original. The crowd-pleasing approach doesn't do much for the plot (it plays out like an inferior version of DEAD POETS SOCIETY), but it does improve on the characterization. You see, Fausto was an asshole. I know that was done on purpose, partly as an act to hide how miserable he was, but there's a limit. Lt. Col. Frank Slade (his counterpart) has a similar personality. In fact, there's a scene where he goes to his brother's house for dinner. He spends the whole night provoking his family and they choose to remain silent. When Randy (his nephew) engages with Frank, everyone tells him to stop. At first I thought it was because they knew that's what Frank wanted, but as the scene progressed, it gave me the impression that they saw Randy's behavior as rude. So fucking what?! He's the only one willing to put Frank in his place, you idiots! What's weird is that Charlie defends Frank, even though the movie hasn't shown them bonding yet. Not really. Not in a way that makes Charlie see who Frank is deep down. Luckily, that happens eventually. As the story continues, Frank displays enough charm and charisma to effortlessly make other people smile (when he wants to). Plus, he's quick to admit his flaws. He's a jerk, but a likable jerk, while Fausto was just unbearable. All the performances are good (Chris O'Donnell's is the best one in my opinion), but Thomas Newman's inspirational music score doesn't really match what some scenes are trying to convey. This story didn't need to be told in 155 minutes, but at least the situations Frank and Charlie get into are more varied.
