This is wonderful. What a find! So many Polish composers who wrote in a very Romantic style.

Marek Żebrowski (Polish Music Center, USC, Los Angeles) wrote an interesting article titled "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra by Henryk Wars: Discovering a Masterpiece" (Musica Iagellonica 2018
eISSN 2545-0360) and referenced that Symphony 1 was completed in 1947-8 in Los Angeles (p. 103.). This additional information may be helpful to clarify confusion as to the history of this piece, a wonderful work. It seems that the core of the piece was completed prior to his coming to Los Angeles, but he chose to make use of his time to complete or fill in the parts that needed more work. Food for thought.

It greatly resembles Erich Wolfgang Kormgold, so much so that this sounds like it could be Korngold's Second Symphony. Except that Korgnold didn't write his first until two years after this one! Could he have heard Wars' Symphony?

I am absoutely stunnend! This was a composer who mainly worked as Jazz musician and songwriter.1940 in the than town of Lemberg he wrote this work while working with his regular band.He later went to the US and there too became a noted songwriter and composer for movies. After all this guy was the composer for the TV series "Flipper" and "Daktari" .I am really overwhelmed by this symphony I didn't know until today. And I for sure ordered the new recording of polish radio from 2017 today. What a find!!!!!!! Fantastic, really!

The essence of this beautiful symphony is the presence of the WW II in Wars's unconscious estate of mind...similar to Chailley's n0 1...With a small big difference: moments of hope! Wars had this ! ..

I indicated "c. 1940", which means "around 1940". This symphony has probably been composed before 1939, or after 1945, probably not during WWII.

This music would make a great film score of a gritty New York ghetto and its inhabitants.

Thanks for uploading this and the 2nd Symphony by Wars. Is the date correct - 1940? Could Wars have found time in Lviv-Lwow under Soviet rule so soon after fleeing from German-occupied Warsaw to write this music? As it was, he creating the Lwow tea Jazz Orchestra at this time, too.

Sorry I'm a little late replying, ha ha. Wikipedia indeed says he composed the symphony in 1940!
