One of the most difficult groups to bring the Gospel to right now is young adults. Fr. Mike proposes that it's not a lack of time or interest preventing them from receiving the Good News-it's their perception of Christianity.
How can anyone evangelize in a culture so opposed to Jesus? We need to meet a hurting world where it is at and bring it the only medicine that will heal it.

I set foot into a Catholic church for the first time at the age of 50. I felt very welcomed that day and because of that warm welcome, I stayed, went through RCIA and was baptized. I've never been more joyful than when I am in mass. I am living to worship God.

As a young adult and a Catholic, I can definitely understand this dilemma. It can be polarizing to many peers to be Catholic, but when they realize how loving and compassionate we are, it changes their mind. I honestly think cancel culture is the main hurdle here. Everyone’s so afraid of being “wrong” that they just pretend to believe in what’s safe. Still, don’t let this discourage you! It’s always amazing when you finally have that one-to-one with that certain someone, and they suddenly realize being Catholic isn’t any of those politically charged five words, it’s, in fact, one of the most loving roles on the face of this planet.
It is troubling because they only know the love of the word, an enabling "tolerant" love. Not the love family is meant to give. Love is like a hug. Holds you close. But also holds you in. Safe.
@@null-xf9pd I like that analogy, because a hug is fine, but a hug that's too tight or when one person doesn't let go is going to be a very unpleasant experience. You gotta respect peoples freedom and personal boundaries too. Some people don't like hugs at all and don't want that expression or interpretation of love. Even if you think hugs are the best way to love, or that love when theologically defined always includes hugs, other people are going to have differing opinions about that.

I see you "choose" to live without it, and I see a maniac in need of help. Freedom, more specifically the modern concept of it, has been disastrous for mental health and the health of society in general. You think the newest way to help addicts is to provide them with safer ways to be addicts?

As a young adult who converted to the church last Easter, I just want to say how much I wish I could thank Fr. Mike for all the he has done for my conversion process. Without the Bible in a year podcast I don’t think I would have ever gotten the jump start to convert into the holy and one true church of our Lord Jesus Christ. So thank you Fr. Mike and thank God for his Church.

@@rp2235RPSure except it’s undeniable that the church as an institution fought social progress such as LGBT+ rights, Racial equality (yes I know Martin Luther King was a pastor. But the Church as an institution still largely opposed it) and Women’s reproductive liberation.
I think what Father Mike is pointing to is authenticity. I worked as an educator with young adults, people between 18-21 for a fair amount of years and the one thing I learned right away is they will respond if they think you are authentic but if they catch a whiff that you are not, that they are meeting your representative, they will check out. As the Gospel of John states, Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Communicate that message in an honest fashion, in a voice that is your own, and you may succeed. Duck and dodge or try and sugar coat the message to make it more palatable and you will surely fail. Lead by example, and stay true to yourself and Jesus Christ. That's my take on it anyhow.

@@kev3d I understand the confusion here Leviticus is old testament which while still important other than the 10 the rules within where replaced with the 2 commandments of Christ, which are to love god above all things and to love thy neighbour, which is why Christians eat pork and shellfish, have tattoos and wear mixed fabric
@@janedove4278 The Ten Commandments are also the old testament. So what? Jesus says: "Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or tittle shall nowise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. "Matthew 5:18-19
You can't just cherry pick the commandments you like and discard the rest when it's unfashionable.
It's helpful to remember that _you_ are the first Gospel many people read.

Not really. At this point I would say everyone (or almost everyone) has at least encountered Christianity or a Christian before they met you. You should be on your best behavior but no pressure. Always remember that people have a past and it's possible that those who have a problem with Christianity have been wounded by something (or someone) they have seen or read or heard about in the past. And anti Christian things have become rampant in this day and age. It's not always your fault or something you did if a non Christian is judging you.
Father Mike every time I get a migraine . I turn on a Bible in a year episode. Something about your voice cures my headache every time.

To everyone who rightly recognizes in me a judge, a bigot, a homophobe, an elitist, and a hypocrite, I humbly beg you to forgive and pray for my soul.
The dEVIL and all those who are either willingly or unknowingly following hIM will always call you such things if you are faithfully proclaiming the Gospel and living it out confidently for anyone and everyone to see.
So, don't be afraid of such labels unless they are put on you from the Lord through His written Word! When we faithfully follow Jesus, the world will hate and persecute us just like they did to Him!
Just be humbly honest with yourself and ask the Lord to regularly examine you to let you know what you're doing well and what you need to work on. It's His label of you as a son or daughter (or not) that matters, no one else's!

Fr. Josh, in Broken + Blessed, states that a man approached him and said, “I just want to let you know that the Catholic Church is the most corrupt institution on the face of the earth … and priests are the most corrupt individuals in the world.” He paused, “praying for the Holy Spirit to inspire me with the words that this man needed to hear.” He responded, “Sir, I just want you to know that I agree with you, one hundred percent...you are looking at the most corrupt, broken, and imperfect Catholic priest there is.” He mentioned the broken apostles Jesus chose, asked the man to pray for him, and he agreed.
In the Sayings of the Desert Fathers, Abba Agathon was accused of being a fornicator, a proud man, a nonsense-talker, and a heretic. He heartily agreed with each charge, save the last. Why? “It is good for my soul. But heresy is separation from God. Now I have no wish to be separated from God.”

It's entirely possible that the perception of judgementalism, bigotry, homophobia, elitism and hypocrisy is an accurate perception.
Fr. Mike Schmitz was one of the few who by God's grace helped me convert, a guy living in Brazil whom he never met. God bless you. God changed many lives through you.

I think this video actually demonstrates the problem rather than refuting the accusations. Fr. Mike doesn't even seem to consider any sort of self-reflection on the part of Catholics, asking, "Are we possibly being judgmental, bigoted, homophobic, elitist and hypocritical? We are human after all and just as capable of transgression as any other human being. Might there be some truth to these perceptions that we need to address?"

Pray for my neighbors. I told her a few days ago that every time she shares something about faith I cannot help but wonder how they are not Catholic yet. I hope they come into the Church soon.
Look up, and share, the definition of "life (Zoe in the Greek) in the concordance and related lexicon for John 6:53. That should help bring her to the Eucharist, which only really exists in Catholicism, and if that's not enough then have her look up "the Crimson worm remez in Psalm 22". Undeniable and A-mazing!!!

Why would they want to be catholic? If their faith is supported with scripture why should they deny scripture and become Catholic?
@J R Obviously her neighbor is making it her business when they share their faith with her. So, instead of imposing your bitterness about other people sharing Christianity with you, just read what's written and work on your own issues in another way.

As someone going through RCIA and raised in a Protestant church we were talked Catholics don't like us and to stay away from them because they do all these things I finally went to a mass and it was so welcoming and accommodating there is just a different type of love for God and for each other than what I was used to from a church

Fr. Mike, I respectfully submit that this is not limited to our youth. These misperceptions, and how to address them, was one of the topics in our Bible group last night - and I am old enough to be your father! God bless you for all the good that you do! 🙏

We are not meant to be of the World. Strong warnings are given in the Bible. Also as you know there are denominations who believe you don't need to do any works. Think this has to do with how much we Love God. Do we love him enough to Love our Neighbours? It is difficult but we are called to be witnesses to Christ and pray for those who hate , dislike, attack or just don't get us.
I sincerely think the argument of faith v works is just a misunderstanding that has become cemented. Can you get by on faith alone? What is faith? Could I say I believed in my son and then not spend time with him? Not go to his sporting events? Not build and maintain that relationship? Of course not. Faith IS work. To believe is to labor. I don't understand those denominations that argue against works.

I'm a Christian myself.
And I have to say, I partly can understand, why people think that way about Christians.
And maybe the Church (not only ours (the CC), but christian churches in general) *doesn't represent the Gospel* right..
Even if they don't _mean_ to be judgemental, elitist or homophobic etc., but they still _seem_ that way bc. they talk the way they talk.
Even for me - and as I said, I *am* a (strongly believing/faithfull!) (catholic) Christian myself - it sounds dismissive/condescending and arrogant/presumptuous to me sometimes..
..And tbh. sometimes not only towards non-Christians, but also towards Christians that are not "perfect" AND EVEN towards God himself..
I think we should all not get tired to remind ourselves, that Christianity is all about Love, forgiveness and hope/trust, and maybe even more to remind us, that _we are just humans, and as a matter of fact we simply _*_don't know_*_ what God will do and how he will judge.._
So *we* shouldn't do it premature in behalf of him..

They think this way because of the vast amount of very cruel people they have encountered who use God as a means to exert viscious power and unkind treatment. I know many people who claim they are close to God and the way the speak about others is deplorable and ugly. There are many people who hold the values of virtue that are taught by Jesus, but aren't Christians/ Catholic and STILL are seen as less than and ostracized.

Fr. Mike, misinformation and disagreements among Catholics and morally corrupt and dishonest priests are why we are labeled as such. I can understand why the young adults would label Catholics as elitists and hypocrites, in particular. Sometimes I personally feel that there's no room for non-Patreon subscribers and not well-spoken individuals from expressing their thoughts on Facebook and TH-cam because the people in charge of those channels seem to prioritize channel growth over real conversations and ignore these people. I've seen it happen time and time again.

Honestly tho, I don’t think this view has anything to do with Catholics per se. I think it’s more a reflection of Protestant Christianity. We just get lumped in unfortunately.

I think there’s a wall in general with people. These days, people are just so judgmental that the very judging they claim to not like they are doing it themselves. I came to that realization myself and through receiving the sacraments, I realized that people go to church not because they are perfect little things, but because they recognize they need God in their lives, they realize they need a little Divine Help. Sometimes I’ll take the Eucharist, and immediately I get this sensation of love for other people around me. I’ve heard a little voice tell me “meet them where they are”. That’s how I came to realize Jesus meets people where they are and he slowly transforms them according to His will.
I have to point out that when our generation has unlimited access to information, we are also the generation able to discern fact from opinion and objectivity from editorializing. We are not rejecting Christ, we are separating ourselves from those who spread hate in his name. And we are not refusing God, we are refusing the church of man. Many of the communities are anything but safe as they are beacons and havens for abusers. It came across as very condescending to imply that the information generation is doing nothing but consuming and regurgitating the whole opinions of others with no way to see truth for themselves.
People just want to be told the truth. When certain circles of Christians speak with such bold certainty without evidence for their claims, people are turned off. We need to form an evangelization program that can touch the heart of a person with a different epistemic framework.

So... It's actually worse than I thought it was. Thank you for the reminder that if I don't stand for something, I'll fall for anything, because I have, many times, due to people pleasing trying to reflect those labels. Those labels do not define me. Christ needs to define me.

I wish that was the case in Europe, too. Here, TLM Masses are much emptier than NO Masses. At least where I live. On the other hand, our NO Masses are on average much more reverent that what seems to be the case in America. Thank God, I have never witnessed one of those infamous clown masses.
A coworker of mine recently had a dog die. When I walked up to him to express my sympathies he very loudly shouted "You Judeo Christians don't even think animals have souls!" Interestingly, a Jewish coworker of mine came around the corner and said "Pope Francis recently said he thinks they go to heaven." I actually thought that was quite beautiful, that Jewish boy came to my defense. "Kelsey doesn't have a hateful bone in her body." It was very hard for me not to react in anger though. This same coworker continues to make constant jabs and the only thing he knows is that I wear a cross necklace. I just held on tight to the friendship that boy and I have formed through love and interaction. I hope I can continue to be a positive example of the Christian community for my disgruntlement coworker as well. I pray for the grace to turn and give him my other cheek. I know it's coming from Christians "hate people like me." Said coworker is trans by the way, goes by "Dana." I could never hate him. He's my brother, and a beloved child of God, and I want him to experience that.

You can teach truth but lack love. Jesus wants us to teach truth IN love. You have to be willing to meet people where they are first. That’s what Jesus did in his own ministry while here on earth. He called people to repent, yes, but he did so in love, by reaching out to them where they were and transforming them. The Eucharist has been instrumental in getting me to understand that over and over. Paul also says something similar, I’ve come to realize. He says to admonish people with tears. Charity is truly important in the work of converting souls. You can’t just take a sword and start swinging it around, because then you’ll hurt people instead of convert them.
I am Catholic, but I kinda understand why people outside the Church think we are judgmental. When you look at the catholic internet debates, you see a lot of people calling each other heretic and even discussing things non faith related in the same way. But that's not a problem with catholics, it's a general problem we see everywhere. There's also misconceptions and false God images, sins and other problems at add even more fear to people outside of the Church.
We are a church that's LOADED with sinners, myself included! But, Jesus doesn't leave us there either!

I personally hate the "heretic" name calling. Surely our faith maintains that some positions/beliefs are objectively true & others as definitely incorrect, but a fruiftul conversation or debate where different views are presented rarely gets anywhere if you heckle someone from the very beginning. Many laymen assent to certain beliefs/stances without _completely_ understanding it, so if one is in fact interested in leading another from heresy to the light of truth, the focus should be on the message (heresy) not the apparent messenger ("heretic"). Arguably clerics & religious scholars can be held to a different standard since they learnt the fine details of their respective religious tradition.

I kind of see other religions as more judgmental. Catholic hate is real. I grew up in a small town and I never saw it. We had a ton of churches and they would all congregate and they all got a long. Then why I moved and especially on the internet I see it all the time.
I enjoyed this video a lot! While I’m a bit confused on why you didn’t discuss the stereotypes mentioned in the beginning, I appreciate the effort and care you put into your videos.
I am trying very hard to stay Catholic, because I love this faith and our traditions. But we can't keep ignoring Jesus's teachings to love our neighbors. I'm tired of my LGBT friends being verbally attacked and laws made against them, when they have done no wrong. The far right makes up lies to make people hate them, and everyone falls for it. Someone can't call themselves a homophobic bigot and claim to follow Jesus. He spent time with people from all walks of life, and he did not hate. Conservative Christianity is destroying our faith.
I was curious about how the Church was approaching these types of sensitive issues and came across a good talk by Fr. Mike on the topic "Fr. Mike Schmitz | Love and Same Sex Attraction". It is a bit long but it is well done. Keep in mind that the Catholic Church has ~1.3 billion members worldwide so it would be almost impossible to not have differences in opinion/controversies over these types of issues. Just try to be the best example of a good Catholic that you can be... and it sounds cliché, but when in doubt, ask WWJD?
I grew up in Christian and Catholic environments in different cities/states/contexts and the "world's" perception is 100% accurate.
Poor catechesis and breakdown of the family has caused the faith to not be handed down properly from generation to generation in the past several decades.
I specifically remember, in Catholic school at school Masses, having a hard time singing the song, "They'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love......" because I wasn't seeing it. In school what I mostly saw was spoiledness, selfishness, cattiness, haughtiness, meanness, all of the things that shouldn't define Christians. This was in the 70's and 80's. Since both of my grandfathers were family abandoners, both of my parents grew up clueless too. They thought they were doing their job by sending me to Catholic school but they had no idea how to reinforce anything at home or try to correct what was going on in the local parish school.
Thanks to our information age, I've been able to re-catechize myself in the last several years and now I finally know what I missed out on as a cradle Catholic.

I was baptized nineteen seventy eight at age 21. I feel aware stutter using street drugs Alcohol Things of the world . Then in my fifties I came back Got married to a catholic woman And I was going for 8 years Then I started listening For the mike and he thought my attention when is headache video on what's a different Positions and catholics . I got hooked and listened to Father Mike. The more I listened, the more I wanted to come back Eventually Came back, and all my confessions took a holy communion, going to mass every Sunday. It’s giving me trouble understanding because I thought children can’t sin and that son or daughter can’t be punished because of their parents sins ezequiel 18:20, I don’t understand when some people say that the children had to be killed because if they weren’t they would’ve been left as orphans and that would be “dangerous”, but in my opinion being orphan is still not as dangerous as to getting stoned to death I believe in god and if he really did that I will understand because maybe he saved those children after death

It's not just the bible alone it's sacred traditions . So many other religions think all you need is a bible . But I find I also need sacred traditions . After I came back to the church, I did all my confessions. Take into holy communion . I learned what sacred traditions were, which I didn't know before . And I learned so much from father mike on the different topics And that's what Got me to come back It's Father Mike when he was share I was the product of Son That came back God does forgive If you realize you're a mistake and a minute and go to confession . It took me three confessions. Do we remember everything? Talking to the priest, I wish I knew everything I would never have left. When I left, I didn't know what the Catholic church taught.

Not all churches are the same
It's not that we Catholic; it is because he is so critical, demanding, controlling and his way or the highway; nothing has changed in 58 years(I am 59). I don't live with him. He has usually been a thorn in my side; deliberately and expects me gratitute. I won't swallow that nonsense.
